Designer handbags without a zipper, WHY?????

Ah, thank you, that makes sense! Thank you so much for clarifying - now I can see it quite clearly in my mind's eye. Hardest part of virtual reality is not being to see each other's bags and whatnot!

I didn't mean "narrow opening." I meant that to be able to use a magnetic closure, the "ends" of the magnet must meet. So the bag top usually must taper to get the two ends of the magnet together.

One that comes to mind is the MBMJ Classic Q Francesca. I loved the shape of the bag, but to use the magnetic closure at the top, you had to be able to make the top "meet," which prevented me from being able to stick a binder in that bag because it wouldn't close shut then.

Another example was my Prada Daino Tote (http://www.neimanmarcus.com/product...11cat14860749cat41500758&parentId=cat41500758). Same problem, couldn't really use it for work.

i've always thought that it's because the majority of the people who can afford them don't need to take the subway. but that's just my idea
though even if you're in your car it can be dangerous, as long as your purse is visible, so i don´t really know :P

Well, the New Yorkers use subway very often, it's just convenient, so it is very easy to be a victim of a thief when the train is crowded. Also I don't like sitting with my handbag and everybody can see what is inside like private stuff.
I would love to have an option to keep my purse open or close if spending 2k on it.

I'm in Boston and can say lots of people of all incomes use the T (aka subway) here. Driving is a real pain here! I like having the option of securely closing my bag whether on public transportation or just walking around the city.

I'm with you 100%! I just visited the BV boutique today on a quest for a very lightweight leather bag and I am so in love with the Large Compana which is closer to $3K! Again, just a snap closure and dog latch across. The SA explained it is used more as a tote. The gorgeous damn bag only weighed maybe a pound empty!

Even though I like a zipper for security - most of my bags are Speedy/Boston style and I always have scratches on my hands from the zippers!

Yeah that too.. Awwww I hate it when that happens.

I have acquired some non zipper ags. I just purchased Gucci Sukey and awaiting arrival. I tested it out when my cousin visited with hers a week ago. I actually liked and found that it didn't expose everything...and she had it stuffed. I like the security aspect of zippers but sometimes zippers get in way of design and scratch you.

For me it depends on the type of bag.

For totes, I prefer no zipper. I love the openness of the LV NeverFull MM because I can get into it quickly. For security, though, I keep my wallet zipped in the inner pocket of the NF. I tend to hold my arm closely to myself to keep the tote opening "blocked" when I'm in crowds.

For a crossbody, I prefer a zipper because the crossbody feels so secure that I don't pay attention to my bag as much. I mean there it is, hanging off my hip and allowing my hands to be free.

I will pass on a bag without a zipper or if the closure does not seems secure. I am paranoid about thieves and also I am a klutz...would hate to have all my personal belongings go flying all over (and me flinging myself in all directions to catch all the items) the place. I do have lots of little pouches and cosmetic cases to keep me organized but I am still paranoid...

I definitely prefer zippers on my designer bags. I will still buy a bag without a zipper, but I would rather that they do have one.

I always worry that I'm dropping things behind me when my bags aren't zipped shut.

I agree that it is possible for someone to steal your items even with a zipper, but it just seems so much more easy for a thief to reach in and quickly grab something out of a bag without a zipper, than to unzip a bag first and then steal something.

I also agree about the car/brake thing - that has happened to me before, and it's so annoying!

I won't buy a purse without a zip closure at the main compartment. I was at a concert a few months back, in the VIP area where ticktets were $600, and someone took my camera and sunglasses because I had a bag that wasn't zipped. Magnets pop open so easily, and small goods can spill out the bag. If it's a good bag the zipper will be smooth and easy. I have a Juicy bag which zips and the leather is worn but the zipper is smooth.

I've noticed lately a lot of people don't zip up their bags even if they have a zipper.

^This^

Sometimes I just throw stuff in my bag and not zip it, especially when I'm putting my wallet, keys, phone...etc in it and walking at the same time. Also for easier access. I still prefer to have a zipper on it though because if I put the bag down and it falls over I don't want the contents spilling out.

I wouldn't say 'most' - most bags of any price range do have a zipper or clasp or something. Offhand the only one I can think of that doesn't (I'm no expert) is the LV Neverfull and they are very popular. Some people like open top bags (I'm not one of them).

I have a Coach with just a magnet closure and last winter I slipped on the ice and all my stuff went flying out over the sidewalk and road. All my other bags have zippers although I admit sometimes I don't zip my LV Speedy - it's difficult to get into so I don't worry so much about theft.
