For me, the love of Balenciaga is tactile and emotional. The colors really speak to me (most of them call out to me, the rest just say "hi!"). Here is one in her natural habitat (on a motorcycle):
They work for many on different levels. Color is the thing I like to swap out most - and I don't like standard colors. I like that the pockets are in the same place - and I don't want too many of them, I just get confused.
But most of all, I like the lightweight, how they hug my body, how when I turn around quickly they don't swing and slug my companions, and, being not a small girl, they fit against me and don't make me any bigger.
For some reason, the fact that they have hardware from 1920's Belstaff jackets and boots makes me happy - and I love the tassles. I bought tooled leather in high school at the only boutique within miles, and I love fringed anything. The marbled look of Balenciaga reminds of my other favorite substance (rocks). I love actual rocks, am a rock collector and amateur geologist. My husband doesn't mind holding my purse, if it's a Balenciaga - he'd rebel if it were LV or any monogram print.
There's a Balenciaga-look-alike bag out by Lanvin (on Barney's catalog, I think) that pushes past Balenciaga style into new areas - and I really like that too. I also like Henry Cuir. I like beads. I like leather that looks tanned, I'm interested in leather tanning.
Coach bags can be marvelous and I'd buy a Coach over a LV bag, any day. A friend had a thick, scrumptious mahogany colored Coach with drawstring and gold hardware at a party the other night, and it caught everyone's attention - more than any other bag.
I like that people don't generally notice my Bal bags, though - they look sort of fun and hip, not all designer-ee. Unless you follow handbags and celeb stories, Balenciaga bags don't really grab that much attention.
I just like petting and looking at certain leathers - I no longer like the stiff embossed leathers I liked when I was younger, but I still have strong leather preferences. I have Balenciaga waxed calfskin, too not just the chevre. I think the range of caramels Balenciaga has had in the past 6 years are amazing, and I'm a caramel kind of girl.
I also like teal and turquoise - so, there's the story behind being a Bal-enthusiast.
It took me 4 years to trash my first Bal bag (a Twiggy, now minus two studs, but the leather is still stunning and there's not a bit of cord showing through anywhere). She's also missing a tassel. I'm very hard on bags (I literally toss them in the back of the 4Runner) and so far, so good, with Balenciaga.
