Designer bags: obvious or understated?

I suppose I own and go for obvious bags.

Whatever got my interest was noticeable, the LV speedy shape, the Longchamp totes, LV Alma's shape, Chanel's quilting, Burberry's pattern. They can be subtle, depending on material chosen (leather over patterned canvas) but I usually end up choosing the "classic, iconic" styles, which in return is very recognizable.

There are subtle, less obvious bags that catch my eye, but usually by the time I consider buying it, people know what it is. Like Givenchy's antigonia (sp?), Bottega's weaved leather.

I think there's a difference here between LV (very recognizable to all), Chanel, Burberry, which are known as "expensive/overpriced" and unaffordable. Non-purse people recognize these logos and have an opinion (often bad) about them.

BV, even Celine and Givenchy "understated" shapes don't mean anything to people who don't know luxury goods. In this way, they're less pushy about their status-signaling. Can you recognize a young urban male's $500-$1000 sneakers? Probably not. In that sense LV is super flashy where something more expensive, like Celine, isn't.

:search: I buy the bag for the bag - I have classic Chanel flaps and Damier EB LV which everyone would recognise and I also have Chloe and LV SC which people don't tend to recognise unless they're into bags.

It doesn't matter to me. It just depends on my mood. I have metallic silver and pink Whiting & Davis (you should see it in the sun-blinding!) and a ladylike bag from Pour La Victoire. For me, it's more about shape, silhouette, and functionality. Ater that, it's about the materials it is constructed from. Personally, I don't take any stock on people's reaction to what I carry. I love it. I wear it.

People who are into brands and bags will know the bags even if there is no logo. Only people who are not into bags will notice those printed with huge logos.

I am fine with both as long as the designs agree with me.

I am neutral. I see nothing wrong to have something discrete or loud ornate design wether it monogram or not.

I do get tired of hearing people who claim they are minimalist and complain about wearing monogram isn't fashionable and it too loud for you where it look ridiculous to just gain attention and I see this person wearing a predominant H belt from Hermes or a Ferragamo logo belt on them. To me people like that are no different to gain "attention". :p

Just don't over do it with prints. And don't be too concern of brands, status and exclusivity alone than you look ridiculous. That ruins the perception of wearing monogram prints or wearing luxury goods in general. :)

Good post!!!

I prefer understated but that is really because I am shy and don't want to draw attention to myself. Not that people who wear monograms are trying to draw attention, but where I live it just kind of comes with the territory.

I completely agree with Jesssh! Definitely understated. Bags that dont scream the brand, but are more about the design are my preferred style. If its overly branded, I automatically think it has to be fake or that the person wearing it wants to show off. I much prefer one of a kind bags then paying a lot of money for a bag that can be easily replicated.

Most of my bags are Balenciaga with a BV, Coach (Bleecker Daily), Ferragamo and a Tiffany tote thrown in. All are understated. The only one that has any branding at all is the Coach, but because of the shape of the bag, and how small the logo is, it's easy to miss.

Then I have an LV Neverfull. I love that bag. It's become one of my favorites. There's a reason it's been around for so long, it's just that good.
So I stopped caring about the monogram and started appreciating the bag.

I'm largely not a fan of bags with logo prints all over them (including LV), but I *have* had exceptions to that rule. I'm still getting into designer bags but I find that I buy for the feel of the leather and the construction, as opposed to recognition.

I did just sort of fall in love with a Chanel though, which I thought would NEVER happen.

At this time of my life, I don't care if my bags scream designers. I have an LV Sobe clutch with a big golden LV logo on the flap. I also have Fendi Chameleon bag that no one recognizes as a designer bag and I also have other bags with little to no brand recognition. Who cares?! If you wear monogram and people think you're a show off, it's their problem. Wear what you like, carry what you want. Life is too short to care what other people think. Everyone who carries a designer bag wants to feel special and if the monogram makes you feel special then rock it!
