Perhaps we just expect way too much from designers at old design houses, because we're so easily bored?Sabato only had 2 years.
I only half agree though. Most of these Creative Directors have been fashion designers for years and studied at fashion colleges for years before that. Some of them know every designer's catwalk show by name never mind season.
It reminds me of the thing that had me worried at the opening Gucci's new, New Bond Street store in London which was a bout the same time as SdS was taking the lead at Gucci. My SA was showing me around and said that Sabato had chosen the artwork. The artwork was terrible, really 'naff' (watered-down, inoffensive kitsch). I wasand hoping it wasn't a sign. I guess it was.
Gucci spent so much money on Sabato's 'vision'. London had Gucci Cosmos, basically a promo exhibition as an introduction to SdS and Ancora. The Elton John and David Furnish Fragile Beauty exhibition was sponsored by Gucci 2024, where we were welcomed with Ancora red walls for much of the show.
I think things could not have been working out on many levels with the hire. I don't think it was just stagnating sales as they had been way down before he climbed on board.
BTW, Margiela was great at Hermes (as was JPG) but I know that he found the job uninspiring.
I hope that Demna will shock us and be sensitive to Gucci's illustrious, dramatically colourful and brilliantly stylish past.
I'm not sure Demna is the solution to Sabato either, btw.

Luxury houses expect too much of us, the consumers. They got too big for their designer boots, catering to new markets, and not to existing clients. I'm exhausted by all the lines, variations, collabs, seasons and price increases.
All my Italian friends really loved Sabato, but now the process is in full flow, I am looking forward to Demna's first collection.
I’ve remained a Gucci fan from the 70’s and 80’s , that’s when I bought most of my Gucci stuff, bags and shoes mainly. I was still a fan in the Tom Ford era but after that, zero!!!!! Actually I’ve just bought my first new Gucci bag in almost 30 years!
Yes sure but I'm separating the designers, from the design houses. They are caught up in having to produce so many collections, and everyone demands this or that. Consumers do get bored we have had so much marketing, special effects, shock value blah blah blah.
On the one hand you have traditional consumers of a brand, the backbone, and then you have an insatiable thirst for the next big thing.
So I'm not excusing fashion houses, far from it. But the pressure on designers right now it madness. I'm also not excusing John Galliano for his drunken antisemitism, but it also is symptomatic of the excesses and pressures.
Everyone needs to chill out but because it's fashion and money, the pressure is relentless.
The big question is whether he'll keep the brand's DNA or totally rewrite it to fit his style. Either way, it'll be cool to see what happens.
