OH jesus I would have killed her. I've got a Coach bag with vachetta like that, and it's so delicate to begin with. Did you say anything to her at all, or did you just grin and think evil thoughts?
I once had a really nice leather Liz Claiborne bag ruined when I leaned against a iron bar fence that had wet paint on it (but no sign saying wet paint!) at a restaurant. They ended up having to pay me full retail value (just over $150 which was a lot for me to have paid for a handbag at that time) because I went to the LC store in Tysons and got them to look up the model number and write me an official letter saying how much it would cost to replace it. The restaurant also paid for my clothes I was wearing (polo shirt, jeans) because dry cleaning couldn't get the paint out. And yes, they also paid for the dry cleaning attempt.

They sure didn't want to pay me money for the ruined bag, but that note from the LC store on official stationary sealed the deal. Of course, that restaurant (Copeland's in Centreville) is now gone, and there's an IHOP there. But the iron bar fence is still there! Ha.
