“Comme des Carrés”
Hermès meets Comme des Garçons
February 6th – March 31st 2013

"Bali Barret, the artistic director in charge of the Hermès women’s universe, has invited Rei Kawakubo, creator of the Comme des Garçons house, to lend her personal vision to the Hermès scarf. This unexpected encounter has produced two collections, each released in limited edition: one, called ‘Black and White’, will be available exclusively in the Comme des Garçons shops in Paris, New York and Tokyo. The other, named ‘Colour’, will be reserved for the Dover Street Market in London and Tokyo."

“Rei Kawakubo has stamped her vision on the Hermès scarf. With rigour, precision, energy and salience”, remarks Bali Barret. This work is in keeping with the Comme des Garçons reflections on the relationship between creation and already existing objects. Here, the encounter with the Hermès scarf consists of an application, or a graphic superimposition onto the house designs, thus creating new and unique objects."

“I have always deeply respected the tradition and craftsmanship of Hermès. In our project together, rather than wanting to wear the scarves, I was looking forward to the change that would happen when I added something to the beautiful ‘paintings’ of Hermès scarf designs. I think through the addition of abstract images, we have transformed the scarf and created something new”, comments Rei Kawakubo."

“Black and White” collection: Available only in Comme des Garçons shops (Aoyama-Tokyo, New York, Paris). Part of the most radical vein of Comme des Garçons aesthetic work, this line is made up of five scarves printed only in black and white, where the absence of colour allows the pattern to drift towards the abstract."

“Colour” collection: Reserved for the Dover Street Market stores (London, Tokyo). Made up of six creations, this mischievous, colourful and adaptable collection has a hybrid character, in which the surprising assemblies (rectangle, giant patchwork, gingham and stripes) rewrite the traditional narratives of the scarf.

The ‘Comme des Carrés’ collection will be available:
From 6th February 2013 in the Comme des Garçons shop, Paris
From 7th February 2013 in the Comme des Garçons shop, New York
From 8th February 2013 in the Comme des Garçons shop in Aoyama-Tokyo, and the Dover Street Market Ginza shop.
From 12th February in the Dover Street Market shop, London

I have just ordered the Coaching carre since I missed this design the first time around was tempted by the Quadridge but dont think I could wear the yellow.
I bought the Quadridge and it is more gold than yellow. That said I have very pale skin and it didn't suit me at all. Shame as I wear lots of black it is looks great with that.

The coaching is very wearable and quite funky. I liked that very much and it is a keeper. Couvertures was sold out but I managed to get one online today. Now that looks fabulous in pics so fingers crossed.

Would love a picture of the Coaching IRL, if you have a chance! I'm debating. . . .

Well my B/W from NYC arrived today (fast!) but haven't opened. I lost all willpower and ordered 4 (yes 4) from UK. I am crazy. It was all I could do not to order the really large format one. If someone gets that please post a picture so I can see it and weep.
Am planning to take a trip to NYC just to see the H CdG mannaquins. I want to bring one home! Haha!

You crack me up about those mannequins, TankerToad!:roflmfao: Maybe we can wrap you up in all of your new CDG scarves and you can be our very own live mannequin. Can't wait to see all of your scarves. Which B/W one did you decide to buy?

Not the same one you did!!
Hey I LOVE those mannequins. In another life I want to be wrapped up just like that in Hermes silk. I love how they look like they are moving and each takes on the personality of the silk it is covered in. In a way I now understand the choices made by the artist for CdG by seeing them wrapped around a human form that way. Suddenly the choices of patterns made sense to me. It did not before. But seeing them that way it just clicked and I GOT IT.
The splash of the Cheval Surprise on the chest of the mannequin as he arches backward as being shot by the paint. As it the power of the pattern has stunned him. The belts of the Couvertures et Tenues around the head of the mannequin as if a human robot, held together by straps, speaks to a city sensibly, the leaning to the future man as a constructed being. The check and fur like pattern of the Touch Me, as if the human has fur, very tactile and yet geometric, an interesting opposing diametric. The dots against the rounded pattern of Thalassa as if a 40s designed dress pattern. And the Pegasus, at first I did not understand that choice but then realized it was the mechanization of the horse. The very avant-garde thought process that runs to the core of CdG. And by applying just a stripe or an additional bit of fabric or dots they do not alter the original Hermes pattern but just add to it. Meld the two together. Simple is always the most difficult. The two artistic sensibilities come together. Simple. Current. Art. Beauty. Timeless but always looking to the Future.
IMO BRILLIANT.

TankerToad, This is awesome! Thank you for sharing this. It really does make sense when you read your analysis and go back and see the mannequins. I agree that this is truly brilliant. I would have never in a million years figured this out. I may be in NYC in a couple of weeks. I hope CDG still has this installation up when I am there. I am STILL on pins and needles to know which b/w one you chose! :smile1:
P.S. Didn't mean to tease you about the mannequins, my friend. Please forgive me.
