Collecting LV and LV as investment

How interesting, I started this thread in the general purse forum
http://forum.purseblog.com/handbags...uying-brand-designer-bags-because-658632.html

I do consider purchasing LV, Hermes, and Chanel good investments, only because, LV, Hermes, and Chanel have good resell value. They are good fun investment, if you were to resell, to fund future bags. They are not for retirement or serious investments where one day you will be able to "live off of."

Handbags don't "grow" in value. It is always depreciating. It is a "used" "preloved," "vintage" bag. You don't heard people say that about realstate, stocks or bonds. Plus, fashion changes, what people like changes. It will never be worth more than what you paid for, but it doesn't hurt to get to have some of what you spend back, if you resell.

Not an investment in any way. Investment is where you expect to see your money GROW, like stocks, mutual funds, even jewelry. Unlike gold, the more a LV bag is worn, the more money you lose. LV is like a BMW, the more you use it, the more it loses value. Unless you're making money on your asset, its NOT an investment. Its just an indulgence.

Yeah, I guess that was more the point I was making. LV doesn't lose as much of it's value as some brands do. I don't buy them to resell, but if I HAD to, it's nice to know I can.

I have sunk a lot of money into another brand and I have some gorgeous, well-made bags. I can't seem to give them away though. I have bags that were $798-$898 and I've sold them for $150!

I certainly wouldn't invest expecting a return, it's just nice to know you aren't throwing your money away. (Hope that makes sense! I only bring this point up because this is my "justification" for moving on from the "other" brand that I used on my hubby:laugh:)

Hi Tikoma, in my opinion, do not buy handbags as a real investment. Good stocks, gold and good quality diamonds are worth it. Handbags are on a different category, needed but not totally worth the $. The inexpensive ones are basically worthless, absolutely fun but then you can always give them away and feel ok about it. Then Vuitton, Chanel and Hermes are on a different level, as after wearing them you can resell and get your $ back - give or take a few $ more or less. Good quality never fail. The joy of wearing them while it last: priceless :D

Absolutely not an investment, no way. If people say LV is a good investment they really mean that you can carry it and then get a decent amount back after selling, but not even your full amount, let alone make $. You might get lucky (for instance I do think a Prada Fairy sells for more than original retail), but that is such a rarity, and if you tried to guess and hold on to many bags the bags you would take a loss on would eat up any and all profit.

Honestly speaking, I do not think it is a wise investment choice to put the money in LV. The resale value does not go up that much, if at all. Hermes and Chanel classics maybe. But yes, purely for investment purpose I'd go the 'conventional' instruments like funds, stocks, shares, precious metals, real estate and the like.

^^ i tried that too! but unfortunately the resale on bags is either the same as you bought it or lower - particularly as more time passes. Stocks are a much better investment.

I would not invest in any kind of bag, what is in fashion today may very well be totally out in a few years, except perhaps Hermes Birkin or Kelly, but even those, I have two Kelly I have been trying to sell for a while, not that easy, so buy the bag you love and enjoy it!

Thanks everyone for your opinions :smile1:

I thought so about LV as investment, i see Rolex and TAG Heuer watches as investment or Chanel as someone pointed out besides my Gold and Stocks. Jewelry is no good investment unless it's from a luxury line like Tiffany & Co. :D

I guess i'll just collect LV's then and if i want to sell one or someone desperately looks for one i'll sell it to them. I enjoy collecting things very much! :D

Is there a special time of limited editions coming out? Probably like with the other brands it's Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter i guess?

Thanks in advance :smile1:

For LE usually are the Show bags for S/S or F/W...it also has Cruise LE or Pre fall LE...it usually spread out through the year...usually it will be release a particular collection after the other...however LV seems to start produce more and more styles and have it named 'LIMITED EDITION' to attract us...that's why LE is not very LE anymore!!!
