Hello,

So as everyone these days i'm also investing my money in stocks and gold. Now i thought about also investing money in Louis Vuitton items, since their price doesn't seem to go down, and often they even go up (limited items mostly).

Now i wonder if anyone else here does that? Collecting LV items or even investing?

I'm sure my girlfriend would love it because she could wear any bag of my investment collection :D

So whats your opinion on this? Is it worth it? Do you think LV items will drop in price in the future?

Thanks in advance :smile1:

I've certainly noticed in other threads that several people on tpf do not believe bags are investments...exceptions being Hermes or perhaps Chanel (which I might argue about but don't get me started on Chanel). I think you should get what you love and can't count on what the market for any bag may be in the future. Some lines/designs retain and increase in value, others don't...maybe if it was a bit more predictable a gal could make some money. Too risky in my opinion but I don't have the stomach for much risk.

It's funny, i discussed about the same with my hubby last days. I told him i want to buy many bags just in order to keep them in my closet, wait a few years and sell them. With the price increase, i thought it could be a good idea. But he told me he wouldn't do that, because the money i invested in would be blocked. Moreover it's not certain that people still want to buy LV in a few years. It can turn to a bad investment.

Chanel and Hermés would be considered as investment by me aswell. I even thought about watches, i know people collecting watches as investment, but this is the LV forum, so i was especially thinking about LV. :smile1:

Theres always a risk, but i guess its safer than the stockmarket or the gold-prices. I guess it's a good idea for limited items for sure, because they always grow in the price, i always see that on ebay, watercolor speedies and monogramouflage items etc.

I don't have the need to sell it in a few years, i'd probably sell it when i notice a price increase and probably mostly focus on limited items which will be discontinued and sold out quickly.

Of course i would only buy limited items which also look very good, not everything limited is goodlooking .

I somehow believe that LV will still be very popular in 10 years, probably even more than now. But thats just what my gut is telling me.

And as i said, i won't have too much fun with the items, i'm a Man, i can look at them and be happy, but i can't wear them, but i also would have fun collecting them. :smile1:

I'm seriously thinking about it, if you notice me revealing women bags in the future which are not for or from my girlfriend you'll know. :D

I think if you have the means financially to do it why not? It sounds like fun.. You're right the prices of certain bags go up in time, especially when they're in mint condition.
I cant imagine women not wanting LV bags in the future, that would be a strange future indeed..

If you have the spare time and money, then yes. However, I think that Chanel has a better investment return with the constant price increases and limited editions.

I personally consider them enough of an investment that you aren't going to be throwing your money away. I've recently returned to LV after taking about three years off. I am having to begin my collection again because I had to part with almost everything.:cry:

That being said, I was able to part with my LV quickly and at very little of a loss. If I was willing to wait it out, I could have probably sold it for more. We basically paid bills with my LV until things improved. Many items were LE, so it would cost much more to replace them now. But I feel that if you are going to collect bags you should at least buy something that will retain it's value even if you enjoy them while you own them. :D:D

I am a bag collector...but I don't think my bag are investment...quite frankly I sold a couple bags before...and it's hard since selling online people don't really trust you and paid high price...selling to a store, it's even harder since they either pay you a cheap price or said the bag it's out of season and refuse to take it...even LE LV...they mostly prefer monogram or basic LV...since those are more popular...and for me I end up losing $$

One can not really make money with lv IMO. Le or not. All the eBay fees and paypal fees are higher than the price increase. There are a lot of people selling certain things at high price, but it doesn't mean they are sold. also, you mentioned your GF can use the bag in your investment collection. Used bags has a big drop in price. It's very rare you can make money with a used bag and paying all the selling fees. Investment to me is I can gain x amount of return a year. I don't think LV does that, especially nowadays.

I don't think the financial growth rate for LV is at an exponential rate. There is a cap and your thousands could be spent better investing in other more traditional investments.....

I don't see them as investments. LE or not.

Well, it doesn't really take any time, except going to the store, buying a bag and go home. Done! :D

I agree about Chanel though, as i said i'm going to invest in other luxury items aswell, watches are probably the best, but not as interesting.

I also agree that the win rate isn't too high unless i'm lucky with some pieces, we'll see.

I guess there are more LV collectors than investors, both should be fun. I'll think about it. :smile1:

Nope, did not work for me. I purchased a cerises speedy (paid $1200 on Ebay, never used it, then sold it for $550 a year later), a cerises pouchette (bought it brand new, never used, took small loss) and a LE wallet (again sold at loss).

Personally I think it is a bad idea, at least with the cerises items. I see them on the MP and they never seem to sell.

Edited to add: I also had purchased d/c vernis bags as well as a few inclusion bracelets and bag charms. I either took a loss or broke even.

No, not an investment...You carry them ..enjoy them ..once you get tiered of your handbags put them for sale...

The value is that after you carry them for awhile you are able to sell them..not like a non designer bag

I'm a man, i won't carry women bags. :smile1: I guess i'm gonna collect and invest in limited Watches and Chanel bags, they seem to be a good investment.

And concerning collecting, i'll collect LV and when i wanna sell some, i can make someone who wants an unused LV bag in the future of a limited sold out line happy. :D

I am more of a collector. Investment are only worth something if someone is interested in purchasing.

I have no desire in selling my bags. I am using them now, but later they will belong to my daughter.
