I just got my 2nd surprise shoe polish bag in a month and need some straight talk about how painful a process removing it is going to be. I know it's gonna be bad, but are we talking hours? Multiple sessions of multiple hours? Might it never all come off?
Of course both bags are black. One of them is a huge Carrier, gulp!
I have industrial strength acetone at the ready...
Ugh! That's awful!
I've only had to do this once, and on a Dinky thank goodness, so I don't envy you this challenge! As I recall it went pretty quickly once I got started. Your bags should clean up fine. Worth the effort, IMHO -- classic bags!

Oh there's hope then! I'm pretty determined to try since they're decent bags. Just trying to manage my expectations so I don't lose it during the process!

Morning ladies - if, indeed, you can call it a nice morning when it's raining after it snowed all day yesterday. Gotta love New England!
Anyway, here's a question to those who has cleaned a blue striped lining of vintage cosmetic bags. I have one that's pretty filthy, and I don't think you can pull it out (it's a slim case). Can I just close my eyes and dunk the whole thing? What I'm afraid is the color from the wet tan leather leaking onto the fabric while it's drying. I have some bad experience with black leather dye leaking onto legacy striped lining because somehow I always manage to get the leather wet. Thanks!

Let's talk cracked leather. No fix for a crack I know but will conditioning keep it from continued cracking? Got an early (glued on serial#) NYC kiss lock tote that didn't seem too bad....didn't notice cracks (undisclosed) until after had already dunked/soaked her. Wondering if I can still return her.

You can't return it because you altered the bag by dunking. It's possible the cracks happened during the dunking. I've filled cracks with leather cement.

I'm pretty sure I dunked a British tan or mahogany slim case without bleeding.

You might search for Snoseal on this thread and see if it's something you want to try. I tested it a bit on a non-Coach and it did a decent job of sealing but others have done more extensive jobs. I'm gonna try Whateve's leather cement idea too - it seems far easier!

Thanks, Whateve! You're the best at answering the bag care questions :)

When you have a moment, could you please take a look at my question at the bottom of the bag cleaning thread? I placed the same one in a couple of threads, but it seems like people don't visit them often. It's about waxed calfskin leather. I know you participated in those discussions 4-5 years ago and was wondering if you could help me. Thanks!

Has anyone ever been able to reshape a structured bag like vintage Madison Gracie?
someone did. I believe they did it to a Carlyle, which has a rounded rather than square shape. It might be in this thread or the previous rehab thread. I think they used a steamer but I might not be remembering correctly. I think there might be cardboard in some of these bags so I'd be afraid to dunk.

Well the bag I was wondering about is not Coach, it's Kate Spade crocodile embossed leather structured bag. It's the same shape as a Gracie but bigger. Haven't bought it because it's caved inwards in the middle. $45 but I don't know if it can be reshaped back.

Another non Coach but I thought I would share here as this is where I've learned the rehab info. Thanks to all of you. I have learned so much!
This is a Fossil briefcase that was badly scuffed. I mixed some acrylic craft paints with Leather CPR and just dabbed and wiped until it looked good. After it dried, I dabbed again on the spots that looked kind of 'painty'. I think I will let it cure for a couple of days and then go over the whole thing with cpr again.
Again, a big shout out to you that have learned by experimenting and for sharing with all of us!20161220_105333.jpg 20161220_110726.jpg
