I have done a search in this thread about the discoloration/darkening due to the oils on the hands.

I found advice regarding handles, one was fine steel wool and the other cornstarch. In my case what I have is a grey/greenish leather clutch that right on the bottom center, the color is much different and I would like to change that at least a bit, if possible. It is not faded from use or sun, the rest of the clutch has the same color that under the flap.

Would the same methods work, could I try something else?

I'd try the cornstarch. You might have to apply heat. The steel wool works when there is grime you can scrape off with your fingernail, like on the handles of vintage satchels. This looks like a much newer piece. The dye might not go very deep so you have to be more careful. You'll probably have to paint it. It's hard to tell if the color is just covered up by dirt or if it has worn off.

Thanks Whateve, I figured the steel wood was a no no with this bag and location of the spot. I tried the cornstarch and on the back side looks better, on the front no much of a difference, I will try a couple more times with heat.

It could be as you say the color worn off from holding the clutch, not just the hand's oils.

I have another quick question, but no need to post pictures I even imagine the answer.... Champagne metallic leather with spots? Nothing to clean it right?

I read about the champagne metallic leather, another one almost impossible to clean like patent leather.

The bag that has some spots is the 15922 Embossed Logo Leather Sophia, beautiful bag but...

I was told that even rain stains the leather, so perhaps crazy question but if I dunk it, won't the whole bag will darken and perhaps diminished the spots.. I really like it, but I do not know what to do.

Just a guess, and would be easier to tell if I could see the entire bag, but that looks like it's possibly fading. I've had bags in that color family that faded very similarly to that.

In other words, the more you try to clean, the more color you're likely to lose.

I wouldn't dunk metallic leather. Your best bet is to paint it. There is a recent thread here about painting metallic leather: http://forum.purseblog.com/coach/my-next-rehab-project-937903.html

I think that the cornstarch has helped a bit. Today here is a very cloudy day so these pictures are taken with flash and it almost looks worse. If faded I am not sure I would use paint, it's a big area.

Thank you for the links, I happen to have that same metallic paint and I also have improved the edges and handles in a couple metallic bags with markers. I am not sure that in this leather would work the same. At least the marks are very small spots not big areas, and depending on the light they are more or less noticeable.

I guess I could keep the bag in movement and nobody would notice then, :D:D

Good evening!! I finally found found an affordable little vachetta legacy lined bag. I've never seen a vachetta bag before and WOW I'm amazed!! The structure, weight and texture are amazing!! It needs a little cleaning, but it's not bad. I think the first thing I should address is the green pen spot on the lining. Also should I protect the vachetta somehow before I clean the brass. Any thoughts or suggestions?? Thank you!!

The brass is supposed to have an antiqued look to it. Yours looks how it is supposed to look. Unless there is verdigris, I wouldn't try to clean it as you will likely mess up the antique finish.

I've used Soilove to clean the lining with success. Pull the lining out and spot clean it.

I didn't know that about the brass. I'll have to look closer in better light, but the strap rings seem to be lighter under the leather. The turnlock the same as the parts or the rings under the leather. Before I resort to a cleaner I'll try a microfiber cloth or something. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions!!!

the lining should clean up nice. I'd use alcohol or acetone on the ink, soap and water for the rest.

I agree, you shouldn't be aggressive with the hardware. Every time I've tried to polish Legacy hardware, it ends up looking worse. I definitely wouldn't use anything abrasive. If you use vinegar, it won't stain the leather.

I have the non-metallic version of this Sophia. The metallic looks similar to my Poppy cinch leather. It is extremely delicate. The first time I carried it, it got spots! Then I scotchguarded it, and some of the spots magically disappeared. I can't imagine anything you can use that wouldn't damage the finish.

Thank you, Whateve!! I've noticed acetone mention many times. So, just regular nail polish remover?

Adorable bag! Now I want one.

For the ink on the lining, I've used 70% rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to clean small ink spots on a tattersall lining, which worked very well. I don't know if the legacy stripe is the same fabric, but that is what I would try first.

Well, I see that to keep using this bag, it is not going to be enjoyable if I worry so much about spots. Time to let go... Thanks! :smile1:

I remember reading on this thread the recommendation of using 100% pure acetone, not the regular nail polish remover. I got some just for rehabbing, it's sold in the same area that nail care/polish supplies.
