I'm getting a little nervous about the Ranch rehab. It looks like I may have activated the mold even with a vinegar soak. It feels dry on the outside, still damp on the inside. I have a fan blowing on it and I reposition it every few hours. This one might be a bust, I don't know. I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna dunk the Rambler now. It doesn't show any hint of little spots like this but I think I can get away with just conditioning. I don't want to risk it.

Did I miss the update on your Ranch? Did it work out in the end?

It did not. It looks exactly the same today as it did when I posted the pics. I applied several coats of CPR and finished with Blackrocks but that did not improve the appearance. I rehabbed a BT Court at the same time and that one looks gorgeous, so I'm sure the Ranch was previously damaged somehow. It did have what appeared to be mold spots on it, I'm wondering if that's what's causing the mottled appearance. It's still functional and doesn't have any funky smells so I will use it on rainy days or when I go to outdoor events, if those ever come back after Covid.

Bummer! Was there more wear where the dark bits showed up? If not, I wonder if maybe something got spilled on it ages ago that is now clinging to the CPR, something oily maybe.

There was patina on the flap but the mottling is made up of tiny little spots clustered together. Unless it was sprayed with something? I really can't tell. I thought about rubbing in some Dawn dish soap to see if there's a greasy residue making it look spotty. Yeah, it is a bummer. I really like the size and shape of the Ranch.

You remove the strap for storage or to wear the bag with a different strap. You put bag back wherever. A few moves later you have no idea where things went.
I store my bags in dustbags and if I don't' want to wear the strap I just leave it in the dustbag so it is there waiting, along with the tissue stuffing, when I put the bag away.

Fix the black dye job as in re-dying it or as in remove the dye?
If the former, I'd still wash before so the dye can take.
If the latter, I'd choose a hidden spot on the back to testdrive different possible methods of removing.
@LunaSilver suggested soaking in hot water for 30 mins, then rub with a microfiber cloth yesterday.
Sorry I suggested that for paint. Dye is different. Paint just sit on top of leather, soak the bag in water will soften the paint then scrub it off without too much difficulty. Dye is penetrated into leather fiber, I don't think it can be removed.
