I have a red bag too with a black stain on the front, a cute Chrystie that I bought really just for the hangtag. My hope was to find one that was in bad shape so I could just take the tag and donate the bag off to GW or something. Well turns out, its a cute style that I kind of like. I wouldn't be against painting other than the color matching, that is the hardest part and I just don't want to invest the money in enough paints to be able to tweak mixtures to get to a perfect color match, I don't want to have them sitting around somewhere in the house, I already have so much **** laying around and all my closets are full....so currently I am not sure what I am going to do with this red Chrystie. Is there or has there ever been a trade thread on this forum? I'd almost give this bag away or even the red dinky or red basic bag that I ended up realizing I will probably never use. I am curious to see your red bag once the fight is over.
Could you do something creative with patches or embellishments to cover the stain?

Here's after
Although the bag is usable again, but since I know it is painted, and look closely you will see color verivation . Bottom line: painting is absolutely my last option. In the future I will avoid anything that may need a paint job.
It looks great! I'm surprised the edges looked that bad before. Usually vintage Coach, even when worn, doesn't turn that white on the edges since the dye should go all the way through. I especially love what you did with the hardware. I don't think that would have occurred to me.

It's a red Murphy bag that has had a hard life. I had washed and conditioned it but the bag still looked dirty to me but I tend to baby red bags because they can be tricky. I finally sent it back for another wash and I hope that it comes out better after the do-over! It's such a cute little bag, I hope it can be saved!

How bad is the stain on your red Chrystie, would you post a picture?
I bet you can get it to looking fabulous.
These spots look like they're on the bottom but they're very visible from the front. Plus the hardware is chipping, so there's that, and it came out of the dunk and dried super stiff and rough feeling even with vinegar in the bath and rinse both.

I thought about that, or maybe covering it with a strip of fabric or something but I am not very creative so I'd have to search the internet for some cute ideas. I'd probably mess it up and wind up with something hideous.View attachment 4708866 View attachment 4708867

Thanks.
I think some leather batchs were dyed less than others. Because sometimes I see pale grayish blue color in seam joints inside bags. I read it before leather were shaved prior to sewing together. So dyed surface leather were shaved off.

I imagine there are good conditioners in Germany, just brands none of us are familiar with. Can you get Saphir products there? I think that is a French brand.
I can, and @LunaSilver already suggested it, but I couldn't find enough Saphir success stories on here. Most people seem to use their dye products. Other than that, there's Amazon reviews that are not much to go on. Lexol for example has some stellar reviews but my recent experience with it was abysmal. I'm sure there are some good products out there, but this thread is my most trusted source and I can't really afford to experiment. With shipping and duties my average rehab costs more, so I want a decent chance of success. I'll do some more research for sure!

I think I would attempt to paint it. When I've painted spots like this in the past, I never got complete coverage but I was able to make them less noticeable.

Oooh, exciting! Where did you learn about that? Would love to read an article about their sourcing.
I used to be a brand rep for them and did their online chat for 3 yrs before they went to in-house for their chat. We learned that they sourced their leathers from Germany and Italy and that they were pieced together in China and Vietnam. The tanneries they had/have relationships with are the same as high end luxury brands, that's why I chuckle because you pay a ton more for 'luxury' simply for where the leather was put together and for the name. Its essentially the same stuff.

Haha, I chuckle with you. Thanks for confirming what I have always suspected. You're still a good rep for them, you just reinforced my brand loyalty. :P

I am still waiting my first Saphir order to arrive. ..Saphir is less common here and more expensive. While CPR is proven reliable. That is probably why not many of us tested it yet.

Lol, thanks! I remember the informational meeting we had with corporate was during the Rex rabbit drama. Coach did some items trimmed with rabbit fur (specifically the Rex species) several years ago and people went out of their minds for Coach doing this. Mind you, they had done coyote, mink, fox, etc in the past, but suddenly rabbit was just a whole different level- my assumption is due to Rex being a common pet species. So we were being inundated with angry chatters about how awful it was and how they were going to boycott, and so on. So Coach gave us a quick tutorial on suppliers and where stuff came from, never naming the actual tanneries or furriers, but the locations and how they followed ethical sourcing guidelines, etc.. It was a sh*t show for a month or so with that.

I think it worth the effort to find out your local products that can substitute leather CPR. I found made in German products are among the best. Such as cars, cookwares, and aquarium filters etc. The German made Eheim canister filter for my 75 gallon aquarium, is so reliable, so quiet, and so long lasting. I don't know how to keep fishes without it..
If you need a testing bag, there is vintage coach tote on eBay that is low price and worldwide free shipping. It will be under US$ 30 shipped from Japan to me, probably will be similiar cost to you. If you are interested, I can PM you the link. Just make sure to have it authenciated before buying. That bag simply just not my style.
Maybe I shouldn't say it here, but the seller marked my purchases before as "Gift". So no import tax as well..
