I also wonder in some cases, in general, how people treat their bags. I know I have friends who don't seem to take much care in their handbags, whereas I baby mine. I don't put them on the ground, I don't fling them all over and over stuff them. Same with people who get stuff on their bags and blame the company's quality as the flaw when it is is more personal responsibility. It is not a quality issue if you get ink/grease/coffee on your own bag.

This is very true, but that aside, there is no question that the quality of, in particular, the leather, but also the workmanship, has deteriorated, in a number of designer bags. As I said, it is very easy to see the leather quality difference when you compare two Coach bags from different decades.

Actually, one of my pet peeves is that many people blame manufacturers for their own carelessness. I certainly don't "baby" my bags but I do take care of them and clean and feed them periodically. However, they are, after all, supposed to be functional.

I baby my bags too, but my newer Coaches don't last like the older ones. My duffles get corner wear no matter how careful I am. Vintage Coach gets corner wear too, but only after years of use, and those bags you can wash and condition, and make them look new again.

Absolutely, my mother is horrid with purses(and yes i am actually lending her one of mine... ) she tosses them about, i swear never cleans them off(all leather, Roots bags) i finally one year grabbed her black larger Roots bag and cleaned the salt stains off it!! shudder.

I don't quite baby, but i am respectful of the things i own.

I am pretty sure there are very few things that are 'like they used to be' i am not that old but i know stuff that was around even 10yrs ago is better done than today. The cost of everything OTOH has gone up, also the interest in prestige, designer goods has expanded for some it's truly only about the name and they are willing to pay for it, for me?

I like some meat in that sandwich thank you very much... i am always evaluating not only the quality of the item BUT the price i am paying to see if it merits it.

I agree that across the board the quality of many fashion items have gone downhill (purses, clothing, shoes, fine jewelry) and the prices shot up. It's also disheartening that while I prefer a classic calf leather or pebbled, suede, etc. more than half the new purses I see in stores are treated lower quality leather, that requires less maintenance but also has issues of their own (saffiano, metallics, patent).

yes, unfortunately looks and the immediate has taken over vs classic, durable long lasting ...

My main purse that i am using is glove tanned leather & raw/unlined.

I am now only buying vintage coach bags and ones from the 60s to early 80s. You can't beat the quality of leather!

Not doubting the leather quality of then, however my re-issue of the Madison satchel has pretty decent leather so does my this year edition Peanuts wristlet, my point being is they do have some decent leather items that are more current. ;)
