Having said that, and having looked at other so called "Designer" bags of comparable price, I notice that many are absolute garbage.
Agreed!
It's all relative, exactly! For the price range Coach most definitely is holding it's own.

I also wonder in some cases, in general, how people treat their bags. I know I have friends who don't seem to take much care in their handbags, whereas I baby mine. I don't put them on the ground, I don't fling them all over and over stuff them. Same with people who get stuff on their bags and blame the company's quality as the flaw when it is is more personal responsibility. It is not a quality issue if you get ink/grease/coffee on your own bag.
I baby my bags too, but my newer Coaches don't last like the older ones. My duffles get corner wear no matter how careful I am. Vintage Coach gets corner wear too, but only after years of use, and those bags you can wash and condition, and make them look new again.I also wonder in some cases, in general, how people treat their bags. This is very true, but that aside, there is no question that the quality of, in particular, the leather, but also the workmanship, has deteriorated, in a number of designer bags. As I said, it is very easy to see the leather quality difference when you compare two Coach bags from different decades.
Actually, one of my pet peeves is that many people blame manufacturers for their own carelessness. I certainly don't "baby" my bags but I do take care of them and clean and feed them periodically. However, they are, after all, supposed to be functional.
I agree that across the board the quality of many fashion items have gone downhill (purses, clothing, shoes, fine jewelry) and the prices shot up. It's also disheartening that while I prefer a classic calf leather or pebbled, suede, etc. more than half the new purses I see in stores are treated lower quality leather, that requires less maintenance but also has issues of their own (saffiano, metallics, patent).
I am now only buying vintage coach bags and ones from the 60s to early 80s. You can't beat the quality of leather!
