Coach Color Confusion - So Just What Color is Marine!?

I agree that we need help with colors especially since Coach is really promoting their online sales program. I know that individual perceptions vary and differences in computer screens and photography can be problematic - but it seems to me that Coach could do a much better and more consistent job with colors, descriptions, and pictures.

Like others I have found that I return more stuff now that I am ordering items from the factory online sale. They usually don't include as many pics with the FOS items and sometimes the descriptions are mimimal - like they may not always include the name for the color!

It's frustrating when you receive an item that isn't what you expected from the pics and the description. I quickly learned to pay for FOS items with a credit card so that I can return them to the outlet instead of shipping them back to Jacksonville. But what's the point of the FOS if I have to go to the outlet anyway?! And what about customers that don't have a local outlet?

I guess I shouldn't complain because I love my new marine/chalk bag that I found it at the outlet while returning some disappoining FOS purchases; but I am glad that I got to see it with my own eyes first because if I had been expecting blue it would have been a big let down.

If coach wants to become an online retail giant they need to do a better job representing their products in this venue, IMO!

I'm lucky that I have an outlet, actually two, pretty close by. I have learned to go touch and feel first. The domed satchels I was eyeing on FOS I ended up hating the leather feel in person. While the Campbell line that I totally dismissed online isn't all that bad IRL. I try and do a mall run for my stuff first but no one had the pintuck in stock so I took a chance. I'm very tempted to add acid green but no way am I buying it sight unseen and no one has it in person yet.

I believe the Madison color was called "Bright Marine". Legacy is "Marine" and is different from Bleecker "Marine". ROFL

Kind of like my love red Minetta that is coral without a drop of red in it. :thinkin:

Exactly! I think I posted this in my own thread but when I got it I looked at it for a few minutes and thought Is it my eyesight or theirs? This is not RED! It was actually a little disappointing because I was looking to add color variety and I had already found a coral bag at the outlet. Lighter but still the same color family which I wasn't trying to copy. Still love my bag although I wish it was a real or close to red. I actually think the pebbled version is closer to an actual red maybe an orangey red but the smooth leather has absolutely no red to it at all. Did that guy not do the kindergarten finger paints like the rest of us? :p

I shop online at another retailer a lot, and for the past few years everything with an even remotely red name is actually CORAL. soft red=coral, soft pink=coral, hibiscus=coral, etc

This makes me laugh because of an incident at a play I attended a few years ago. It was Finnegan's Wake and it was an interactive play with the actors engaging the audience and involving them in the action.

I made the mistake of wearing a coral jacket and I took a lot of ridicule from the actors because I "had the nerve to wear orange to an Irish wake!" At one point I retorted that "the color of this jacket is coral not orange!" but the actor just laughed at me and replied with pity in his voice and in a thick Irish accent "Darling, they only call it that so they can charge you $50 more!"

Maybe that's what it is all about, they try to come up with a sexy sounding name to increase sales even if the color name is inaccurate!

And then too, I don't need another red or pink sweater, I already have several! But I don't have one in hibiscus or washed red…..or love red…cha-ching

I suggest we need a sticky in the reference section: the real color wheel and the Coach color wheel. I think it would help us all with our future purchases a great deal!

Coach used to have some kind of color identification web app. It had a bunch of dots that moved around and you could pick a dot and it would tell you the color. I never figured out how to use it very well. It was pretty. :shrugs:

I can't find it on google.

Very confusing, I agree! I have the Haley and Patricia in Marine. Silver hardware, leather color is definitely purple. Ordered the Dogleash Duffle in Marine from fos...returned it. Hardware was brass, leather was way more blue than purple. It was a beautiful bag but the closure was cumbersome. The leather type was vastly different from the legacy leather: more shiny, smoother, less pliable.

I wonder why we are left to guess again? I will never understand companies making their customers' lives difficult. We'll have to find that app!

Because I enjoy rehabbing vintage Coach bags I have found the color guides (illustrated with hangtags) that Hyacinth has posted on TPF to be an invaluable resource, see the links below. I wish Coach would update this service to help us better grasp colors with names like "plume"!
