If you want crossbody, I think you'll want the longer one. You can hang a measuring tape over your shoulder to see where the top of the bag would hit on you. I think the original Coach straps were 36 inches. I don't think the width matters since the clips are all the same size. The wider the strap, the more comfortable it usually is. Thinner straps might dig into your shoulder.

Thank you for replying so quickly. I am going to use a measuring tape but most likely I will stick with my original gut feeling of a 1/2" wide and 45" long strap.

I had two of the original made in NYC basic bags which even had the number glued onto the creed. I cleaned them up and gave one to one of my friend's daughters who is going to school in NYC studying architecture - that's what she got from me for a high school graduation present.

I don't have problems with my bags getting scratched. I do moisturize the bags regularly, but I do not baby them. They go out in the rain/snow with no problems.

Today I am carrying a convertible clutch in red that was also made in NYC. I hadn't used this bag in a long time, but it looks good. I don't really have any problems with scratching. Even if the bag scratches, one of the easiest ways to fix it is just to rub it with your hand - the oils from your skin will help cover the scratch.

Moisturizing your bags regularly is my big secret. My mother used to yell at me because she thought I was carrying a new bag when I was using one she hadn't seen in a long time - I would have to explain that the bag was no longer being made and that I had just really lubricated it and that is why it looked so good.
