I don’t enjoy facing my ‘mistakes’ any more than the next person, but I do think there are huge benefits.

1. When I let go of expensive things, I am far less likely to be a repeat offender and buy something unsuitable again. Lesson learnt!

2. There lots of lovely empty space in the closet - such a luxury!!! Clothes need to breath or they become musty and unusable

3. Opportunity to refine my style. I adore getting dressed because I love all the (few) clothes I have. There are no bargains, no maybe one day or that will do purchases to cloud my judgment.

Agree!
It’s so much easier to get dressed if you have a closet full of things you love!

I have never bought a bag over $500 Cdn (inclusive of tax). I came close a few times in my 20s but I always managed to resist. Bags don’t ever really hold their value. With my price ceiling on bags, it makes it much easier to part and just donate when I’m tired of them.

I haven’t donated a bag in a while as I haven’t bought a bag since last year ... I know enough now to look at size, function and design before I pick up a new bag, regardless of the bag’s brand name. There’s only one bag I have trouble parting that I bought in my mid twenties. An old Coach flap bag. I love the leather, they just don’t use that sort of leather anymore and there’s hardly any hardware other than the clasp. The problem with the bag is me - my shoulders slope and it doesn’t work well with the strap design and falls off easily. I have a cheap PVC white structured handbag, similar to the Prada/ Tory Burch design that I wear more and love more than the Coach flap but in my head, because of the quality of the leather I still feel that I should get some $$ back because I know if the purse worked for me I would pay something for it. So, I understand how there’s difficulty in just donating a bag. However your perspective is very different from another’s assignment of how much something is worth.

Now clothes & shoes...I regularly clean out and just donate. I think clothing is even harder to sell because I hate wearing secondhand clothes unless it’s made of really good material (ie wools, silk, leather and leather lined shoes)

I seem to have inspired my husband to clean his wardrobe. He thinned out his jeans collection and gave me 9 pairs of jeans to be disposed. These are LEVIs 501 and organic nudie jeans so I think a lot of charities are happy to receive them. They can be sold even because for some reason jeans are redone to more fashionable cuts. My own jeans though - especially fast fashion ones-nobody wants...

The weather is warming up quickly here. As I get dressed now, I find myself rejecting many of the items I wore last spring/summer. I’m not even trying to make them work....I’m just accepting that they are no longer right for me. Even if they’re perfectly good, or in some cases never even worn, I’m letting go. Time to move on. I’ve always done seasonal clean outs, but I’m feeling this is the easiest one I’ve ever done. Perhaps it’s the discussion and support on this thread. Thank you, everyone! Both my peace of mind and closet are grateful.

I agree. I think closet renewal is essential. The key is to just buy sparingly and replace often.
