Ladies please help! I purchased a wonderful colorful 100% silk scarf this weekend, and the first day of wearing it the wind blew it into my face and now there is a lipstick mark all over it . I'm reading here that drycleaners may ruin the hem, and since the scarf is so colorful, I'm afraid that colors may fade in dry clean. How likely it is that the colors will bleed if I hand wash it? Would any of the recently produced scarfs have such issue?

I'm really devastated, this one is the most beautiful one I own... Any input is very welcomed!
Apply a little transparent dish liquid detergent to a soft foam sponge. Gently pat the places with lipstick and slightly move the sponge. Then wash in cool water with the addition of salt and color catcher (you can buy a сolor catcher in Target).

Nooo don't worry it'll be fine  Especially the recent scarves are very colorfast, I've hand washed at least 5-6 of mine (all bought within the past year) and no color bleed whatsoever. Make sure to use cold water and keep the scarf moving in the water (don't let it sit).

Many thanks to both for replying. I took a plunge and washed it . There was absolutely no dye in the water afterwards, now I know why these babies cost so much. The stain is still there as I did not want to rub it too much but much more faint and I can live with that. Ironing was a bit of a pain as the scarf is 140 cm, but looks like brand new now.

Hi,

Is your scarf cashmere and silk? I just got a cashmere and silk 140 and wondering how to clean it when the time comes. I have the Laundress wool and cashmere shampoo and wondering if I can use this. I have only used the shampoo for cashmere.
Thanks.[/QUOTE
Yes it is.
In the meantime, I washed it one more time- no problem at all.

For the future, here’s a tip on how to remove a lipstick stain from silk. I’ve never tried it, so I can’t say how well it works.

HI all,
I cleaned a 20-year old Madison Avenue store scarf in cold water with gentle cleaner in the sink.
You will see there are still some dirt marks on the piece. Any suggestions for removing these?
Thank you!

I have removed similar marks with q-tips and cleaner. First I make a diluted cleaner solution (1:1 ratio of cleaner (the same as you use for washing) and water). Second, before washing the scarf: apply some cleaner solution on the Q-tip and gently press the Q-tip with the solution on the stains of the dry scarf, don't rub too hard!! Then wash the scarf as usual. Good luck. And please try it on a small spot first, I haven't had any issues with newer scarves but I don't know how the older ones hold up.
Maybe someone else has other helpful suggestions.

I have used a stain stick on fold line marks like this. There's always some danger, especially with the older scarves, but I think if you concentrate on the pale border with it and avoid the colored interior with the stick, you will have some luck. There's really no dye there to mess up on the border. I've even used stain stick on a Q-tip for application to keep it focused.

you may not get all the fold marks out, but you ought to alleviate it a bit more.

PS- when it is dry and cleaned up enough for you to store - FOLD THE SCARF WITH THE BACKSIDE OUT- so the front of the scarf is inside the folding and a bit more protected. You might get some fold marks over time but at least they'll be on the back side.

That’s a great idea, and one I’ve never thought of... I’ll start folding mine that way as I wash them. Makes sense!

So good! Do you have a preferred stain stick you use? Thank you!
