Scarves Cleaning and Caring for Hermès Scarves

Just throwing in another tip - I just had a 90cm silk scarf off ebay which had light stains which I reckon were lipstick. I thought to myself that if my face wash gel is gentle enough for human skin (and removes make up)that it must be ok for silk - so I gently worked some into the stained areas and then I washed the whole scarf in a cold bath with Stergene (=Woolite) and it came out all clean and the stains removed.

Good idea re the rolled up towel to start rolling your scarf with!

I have heard of other people hand washing their cashmere GMs with good results.

I would NEVER send another scarf to Hermes to have it cleaned by Tie Crafters. They poked holes in all 4 of the scarves Hermes sent there and flattened the hems of 2 scarves.

I was LIVID.

I have handwashed my cashmeres with Loro Piana olive oil/cashmere soap and the result is excellent.

I used to use Tiecrafters when I lived in NYC (as recommended by Hermes), and they always did a great job. But it seems they've gone downhill. Last year, I sent three scarves to them to be cleaned, and when I received them back, they didn't seem to be clean at all. They were still kind of wrinkled, there was a stain in the crease of one scarf that I told them to pay attention to, and it was still there and on another scarf there was what appeared to be black streaks in one spot that were NOT there when I sent them the scarf. They charged me $75, and, like you, I was also LIVID

I will NEVER, EVER use them again. NEVER!!!!

I've handwashed several of my scarves and they've always come out beautifully, but I hesitated with two of these scarves because they are brightly colored and I was concerned that there might be some fading. :shrugs:

Calling Bangkok residents.
Hi I just moved to Bangkok and need to have some of my H scarves dry cleaned. Which dry cleaner would you recommend? I live near Emporium, would the Hermes boutique there have them dry cleaned for me?

OMG! I just gave me precious Kachinas shawl to Hermes to have it cleaned to remove some spots. I will seriously FREAK OUT if they screw it up!

Did you have to pay for the cleaning since they damaged your scarves? Was anything done to make this right?

Just a quickie email from work as this thread caught my interest:

I have washed my silk scarves with (Le Blanc) Linenwash (upscale bedlinen stores will sell it e.g. Yves Delorme or online via linenwash.net) only. I cannot say good enough about this detergent, a lifesaver!

I used it for all my fine bedlinen and because it is so mild and maintains the color, like new, every time I clean my bedlinens.

Handwash, just let it soaked in luke to coldish water, I let it sit for less than an hour, rinse, rinse, and then roll it out in several bathtowels to get all the water out. I airdry my scarves, with the entire scarf perfectly spread out.

Final touch - steamed iron - silk setting. Comes out everytime like magic.

I have done the same method for my cashmere/silk scarf, have not tired it out with my cashmere/silk shawels, honestly, the warning of dry clean only makes me hesitant to use the above. I also have never used it on ties either.

Good Luck.

Just washed my vintage 70 Quand Sudain with Le Blanc & same method as gamdc uses and it came out just beautiful!

Glad to hear it works for you too! :yahoo:I think it is the best, and I have been giving it out as gifts to folks who would appreciate this great detergent!

I have been using this detergent on pricey boxers and underwears as well, the condition of the fabric and the vibrancy of the colors cannot be beat after using Linenwash....

I washed my first scarf today following the advice found here and it looks perfect (and smells fresh) I now feel bold enough to hand wash my other scarves...except maybe for my beloved black and white La Femme... Don't think I'll ever get brave enough to wash that one....

Many thanks to everyone on this thread who posted hand washing advice/methods.

Hi all
just to say after browsing this thread and doing some research on website - think it was perfectredbox - ? i took the plunge with my Astres et Soleils cashmere GM. i bought the shawl pre owned , it wasnt grubby but when i got it it wasnt like any of my other GMs, older or newer - very fine texured, so that when you hold it up to the light it feels a lot thinner. it had been dry cleaned and had a tinge of chemical dry clean smell which bugged me. also the whole texture of the shawl felt very flat and not at all soft like my others...(i have a Tropiques from mid 80s, reve d'Australie from the late 90s (?) i think, and Carre en Carres from a few years ago and these feel more pashmina-like. this one basically feels like fine wool tho the fabric content says it is the same as all my other ones....

SO today i washed it in a big bowl of cold water with half a lidful of Woolite detergent added. swirled it around in the water for 5 mins or so, did not let it sit soaking.....
did 3 changes of cold rinse water, agitating again. last rinse with a slosh of white wine vinegar in case of any last minute run. then i squeezed out (not wrung out) some water, popped it in a laundry bag and spun for 2-3 minutes ONLY in my washer (which is 1400 rpm speed spin). i didn't let it do the whole cycle, just enough to get most of the water out.
then pressed the reverse side with a warm iron on setting 2 with no steam ....
hang it flat to dry... so far the colours look a bit brighter, it feels a bit softer and im really pleased. no colour run, hems still rolled - i mainly washed to get rid of the dry-clean-residue smell tho, not because it was dirty per-se or stained....

also, as it was a black shawl with sepia, green, yellow tones all the colours were quite dark.., so if anything bled it wouldnt be that noticeable. if i had a pale or white shawl with bright colours may use a colour catcher in water next time....
however im pleased and it has given me inventive to tackle some of my older, and grubbier carres....(and maybe my reve d'Australie GM too at some point)

hope this helps.

Good to hear your success Prada with your GM- even with the machine spin !!!

Booksnchocolate - Birkinmary washed her B&W La Femme no problem! I think the later scarves are much less likely to run. But well done on your wash as well!
