I understand this is a "classic" jeans thread, but what do the denim aficionados here think about the balloon/horseshoe trend? I've been resisting it up until now because I thought it was just a flash in the pan, but now it's been going on a couple of years with no sign of slowing. Some versions I've seen really look great! As long as they're not overly exaggerated, they can look like just a nice "roomy-in-the-leg" style. I always love good baggy and wide-leg options in my denim collection along with classic straight leg.

On the note of styles and trends, do we think skinny jeans are coming back?
I wear what I think is most flattering for me. So for me skinny jeans didn't go away.

I hear you, but do you ever feel like your "eye" gets influenced by what's going on in the trend cycle a bit? Now when I see someone in skinny jeans, like the super-lycra/jegging ones fitted all the down to the ankle, I kinda do an inner shudder.

I never did like the skinny jeans that look like leggings but I don't think the baggy ones are flattering for my body type. I'm too short-legged

I'm not tall either and find that wide leg, flare (fitted in the hip and thigh but with a subtle flare at the bottom) and bootcut styles to be really elongating of the silhouette because I can pop on comfortable, heeled footwear and with the longer hems on these styles, the heels are not even visible so I look like I have really long legs. I do avoid super-baggy styles but you can get wide legs, flares and bootcuts that are not baggy, or only slightly baggy.

I am not a denim expert by any means, but I think the barrel/horseshoe jeans that are not overly exaggerated look good, offer more denim style options, and will stick around for a bit. You might have to try on a few different styles to find the right one for you. I have two that I picked up from the local department store. When it comes to styles that are new to me, or trend pieces I'm unsure of, I try to buy less expensive or mid-range brands. If I do end up wearing and liking them, I might upgrade to premier brands depending on how much I am using them. Since it's summer, I've only worn barrel leg jeans a couple of times, but they are very comfortable and easy to style.

Regarding skinny jeans, I've heard they're coming back but slightly modified from earlier versions. Apparently, they're more of a slim version (fitted through hip and thigh but not as clingy from knee to ankle as previous versions). I don't know if this is true because I haven't tried any new ones and don't plan on adding any to my wardrobe.

The barrel jeans are definitely a vibe. I feel like.. if that suits your personal style.. sure. So cute. They are much more flattering on women with a few curves (IMO) but generally.. just wear what you like!
The term jegging in general gives me the ick.. those aren’t jeans.

my oldest jeans which I've had for a Long time - like maybe 20 years - are J Brand. They aren't making them anymore. I just noticed one of knees is wearing through. I tried buying another pair on Mercari but the rise is too low. there is a pair on Poshmark that looks to have the same measurements but it's a different wash. I hate to buy something and have it not fit. If I tried the Levis 714 and they didn't fit I could return them pretty easily. With the ones from Poshmark I wouldn't be able to return them but they would cost less.
you can always re posh the jeans, but reselling not for everyone
did u look on ebay , sellers can offer returns there
jeans need to fit right

Did you get the Poshmark ones? If you really love your J Brand ones but they are getting holes, you could find someone who does special stitching/repairs on jeans...it's becoming a "look" to have vintage denim stitched over on the worn areas.

If there's one thing I've learned about jeans...they have to fit, so I have to try them on and I have to be able to return them. I've wasted too much $$$ buying on non-refundable sales and thrift

Tried on a bunch of barrel jeans today and really liked a few of them. I think these Levis Baggy Dad Barrels were my favorite. I sized up so they can sit low (like in the pic) or I can cinch them at the waist with a belt. But really they are not significantly different enough from loose fit ones I already have. I may order some other styles they didn't have in store to try...

The most popular barrel fit that I see around are the Good Luck barrel jean by Free People

@TC1 - yes, I tried those ones on, but they are more an ankle-length on me and I want full-length.

@sdkitty - thank you - yes, that's in the Levi's change room lol

I've ordered the Gap X Beis ones so we'll see how these turn out.

I think I like the Levis better but maybe it's the way they've styled these in the pic. I don't like those shoes

I think I have a pair cut as per your meaning. It’s a roundish barrel shape. IMO, it has to properly fit in the waist AND the rise, or the shape will kind of shift on its own.

The barrel cut can look nice if you can wear a skinny top (like a silk shirt that skims the body (I only have one make of shirt that does this well) or shorter top (for younger people than me) to showcase the waist. Since I’m thicker waisted , relative to my size, I do have to be thoughtful about how I style it.

I think, if you are younger, this can be an updated classic. To me, it’s reminiscent of some late eighties/ early nineties trend that may have repeated in the early aughts (same as the bubble skirt, a knicker, or a certain style of culotte)

Premier designers like Chanel are bringing back a slim leg, but they are hedging their bets by continuing to offer wider trouser cuts and boot cut denim. I haven’t seen anything approaching a jegging or stirrup pant 😅

So, it seems almost anything goes :) though I don’t see myself cycling back to a lower rise.

My barrel leg jeans are high-waisted and I sized up one size. Although they're a relaxed fit, they're not as baggy as the Levis ones and the hem hits right at the top of my foot so they're slightly shorter than the ones pictured (but definitely not cropped). They appear ever so slightly tapered at the base/bottom hem area. Depending on the footwear I pair them with, they can look less or more barrel-ish. I like them best looks-wise with a 2 to 2.5 inch heel as they look more barrel shaped (but not too much) because of the heel and the tapering. Worn with footwear without heels, they look a little less barrel shaped. It's interesting how much variation there is amongst different barrel jeans being offered and that means trying on a few different options before settling on the look you're going for. Good luck and keep us posted!
