So…..I purchased a bag from this sale and it is beautiful, but it has the most god awful cigarette smoke smell. Horrible. Does anyone have this experience? And any suggestions how to get it out? My bag is Fauve barenia and toile. Help!
I would try and return OR suggest they put it in their next auction and waive their sellers fees on the grounds that the odour was not disclosed in the description of the condition of the bag.
The fact that your bag contains toile makes me think you will never get rid of the smell as it is probably impregnated into the fabric.
Worse it may make your closet smell too .
I always when considering purchasing at auction request further details (like odour) even if its NOT given in the condition report available for download, And I am always wary about bidding for an item at auction that i am unable to go and view.
I say this because even reputable houses sometimes miss things and its really important to actually hold the bag and inspect in person.
Hermes bags are never inexpensive so buying remotely requires extra diligence.

If it reaches a point that you have to take the matters in your own hands, I highly suggest activated charcoal bags to remove the odor.

Like this:

Put them inside the bag, leave them for a day, or even longer, until they have absorbed all the odor.

I forgot to say that if the odor is from outside the bag, naturally you should put the deodorizers on the surface of the bag where the odor comes from.

Hope that helps.

Ugh this is all such a bummer. I think I'm going to try the activated charcoal and such. I think it's going to be such a pain to try to return it to Christie's and it's a pretty rare bag that I really want. I don't think I'd be able to find another one like it. It's a Bolide, so pricey but not incredibly so. I am surprised that no one else has reported this issue since all the bags in the auction came from the same person.

Sorry this happened to you. Maybe check with @needmoneyforbirkins, if she had any issues with her bag.

Just read your post - I also got a toile bag from this auction & it smells pristine so I'm shocked yours has a strong cigarette smell. Hoping you got the issue resolved with Christie's!

If you do not get a satisfactory resolution from Christies or you decide that you want to keep the bag, do you have an outhouse (secure) where you can leave it for a long time so thatfresh air can circulate and dissipate the smell over a period?
