Choosing a watch for my 40th birthday

If your heart sang and you love RG, get it! It’s a beautiful watch in every aspect. Forget if you might get sick of it in the future. You love it now. I loved YG for a long time, but now I truly despise it and got rid of all my YG jewelry, including all my two-tone Rolexes. Do I have regrets I purchased YG? None. I loved it at that moment and wore it for years.

Since you love RG now, get it. It is very popular now if that factors in your decision. You will certainly be on trend.

And yes to a Rolex, no doubt in my mind. Happy 40th!
Thank you so much ♥️. I will look into more options and try to not make my decision based on the rush and the FOMO - I want to make a purchase that I’ll love for many years to come! So I’ll take my time to decide. I’ll keep you posted here about my final decision :flowers:

I prefer Cartier watch’s over Rolex however I own both. I have the two tone Rolex with white face gold Roman numerals and find this combo to be very easy to work into everyday casual lifestyle. It’s something about the crisp white face that just works. The Cartier watches are more feminine imo.
Thank you so much for your advice ♥️! What’s your favorite Cartier watch if you don’t mind me asking?

My vote goes to the Rolex watch with white dial. I adore the Cartier Panthere (it's on my hit list lol), but not their two-tone iteration. Just an FYI, there's been a price DECREASE on Rolex MOP dials if that interests you. Let us know what you wind up with - pun intended lol:graucho:

Hi! I am a huge Rolex fan, so Rolex for sure. The watch company is legendary. The Rolex watch in the photo is classic, sleek, timeless, iconic. If you are looking for a 31 Rolex, the one you have on is perfect. Two-tone, white roman dials, smooth bezel, oyster bracelet... the perfect combo to me. I would prefer YG though, not RG.

I am not a fan of the Cartier, especially the bracelet which looks busy to me (and a bit dated to be frank). It does not have that "clean look" you are after. I too like clean, crisp looking watches (I wear a Rolex stainless Daytona).

On RG, no for me. I think it's a trend, hard to match with other jewelry (unless you have other RG pieces), and also a possible maintenance issue. RG does change color, it takes years though, especially Cartier RG. You can read up Cartier's RG and how some ladies are seeing color change already. Rolex's Everose is not supposed to change color because they use a mix of platinum, but you may get tired of RG so it's still a no for me. YG and stainless/WG are classics. If you like RG, the combo is great. If not, I would get that same watch in YG and stainless.

Just my two cents for some thoughts. Good luck to you and happy birthday!

UPDATE: Since you asked about RG, if you are considering the Rolex only because it's in stock but you don't love it, I would skip. You can always order it. It may take time (Rolex is really backed up now), but you will get the perfect watch. I would not settle for RG if you are hesitating which is sounds like you are since you asked about it. It has to be love at first sight. For me, I would not settle for something just because it's in stock. I would order what I want.

I’ve been seeing people say rose gold is a trend for over a decade now

It’s just a fact that this tone of gold goes better on some skin tones. It’s never going away and will never look bad on the skin tones it suits.

If you want rose gold, get rose gold.

My thoughts... I give it 10 more years. The trend for RG will fade. The new trend in metal will be what Gen Z dictates as they become the big consumers. RG is not new, it's been around since the 19th century. It just took off recently due to the love of Millennial Pink and all things pink/salmon over the past 10 years. YG and WG (white metal) have always been around. It may not always be on trend, but it's always here. Bold YG pieces were the rage in the 1980s, then platinum became the metal to have. Ladies even went so far to change their YG engagement rings to platinum/WG to be on trend. I really do not see that staying power in RG. We shall see.

But yes, jewelry, including watches, is fashion, and if you love RG, buy it. Trends are just that. I love white metal (platinum/WG), whether it's on trend or not.

Hello all and thanks for letting me share my research here. It’s my 40th birthday in February this year, and I would like to offer a watch to myself. I currently have just one watch, a Cartier Tank Solo (steel with leather bracelet), that I use every day. My style is quite simple (no logos, very minimalist) and I do love to complement my looks with special pieces of jewelry (my YG Love bracelet, my Love wedding ring) and bags.
I’ve been eyeing Cartier and Rolex, and I’ve tried on a couple that I like. The Panthère in YG + steel, and a Rolex Lady Datejust in RG + steel. I’m aware of how difficult it is to find Rolex watches available out there and in fact this was the only one they had at the boutique in this size (they had a 31 in steel, but with diamonds).
What do you think? Cartier or Rolex for this special occasion? Rose gold yes or no? And which size? Other suggestions?
Thanks in advance! ♥

Yes, we shall see but if RG is not new then how can it be trendy? I notice most of the colored gold Patek watches are actually RG and have been for a long time. Otherwise, it seems to be a common choice with many fine watch and jewelry brands. Yellow gold can look quite blingy on some people, white hold bland RG is a welcome additional choice.

I have a 2-tone 36 Rolex and I love it. It's the jubilee bracelet with fluted bezel, pyramid face & roman numerals. My deal breaker was I had to be able to tell the time so the face had to be VERY clear, no gold hands on a gold or colored dial.

I have an old lovely rose gold watch (Mathey Tissot) that I got for a steal years ago and the hands are so small it's nuts. But it is pretty.

It sounds like you really love the RG Rolex, and it certainly is classic and gorgeous!

But if you’re still interested in doing more research…and it always helps to try on lots so you just know as soon as you put something on if it’s a “LOVE” or a “meh”…here are a few other options:

Since you already have a Tank and say you love minimal, non-blingy style, try on an Omega Constellation and Aqua Terra. And a Grand Seiko. All very highly regarded by watch enthusiasts and more under-the-radar.

Good luck with your hunt and happy birthday!
