Chastity Bono announces sex change

LOS ANGELES – Chastity Bono is having a sex change to become a man.
A spokesman for the daughter of Sonny and Cher says Bono "has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity" and began the sex-change process earlier this year.

Publicist Howard Bragman said Bono "is proud of his decision" and hopes "that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue."

The 40-year-old writer, activist and reality-TV star came out as gay 20 years ago.

I really don't understand the logistics of a female-->male sex change. I'm not passing judgment, I just really don't get it. Do the parts actually work?? Sorry, I'm trying not to be graphic here :shame:

well there was a blurb in this article (and possibly also in the link roo posted...sorry didn't read it through) where it talks about how that isn't necessarily done 100% of the time - ? "...Someone's decision to transition does not necessarily mean they are undergoing gender reassignment surgery, and in many cases they do not, said Mara Keisling, executive director of the Washington-based National Center for Transgender Equality..."

Interesting. Well, I guess I'm happy for her, er I mean him. I wonder what Cher thinks?

I guess if it makes her (him) happy! I noticed they said "him" in the article so that's probably how he thinks of himself. It does seem very complicated to me too. I would think Cher would support whatever her daughter needs to do to be happy.
All I keep seeing in my mind though, is little Chastity on the sonny & cher show. She was absolutly adorable.

I have also read that Cher's son is a crossdresser. Seems like there is a lot of confusion when your Mom is Cher! I wonder if she'll change her name?

I still don't really understand all the terminology and how it's used in different cases. I mean if Ellen changed her name would she be considered transgendered? She already dresses like a guy & dates women... I guess it's unclear if Chaz is having surgery and if she does will they just remove breast tissue? It's all very confusing & I feel like people always tip toe around all the details. I'm honestly just curious & would like to have a better understanding :shrugs:

claireZk, a colleague I worked with was a transgendered female to male, he had undergone a mastectomy and hysterectomy, was using hormone therapy but had yet to undergo the final stage of sexual organ reassignment and he said he needed to go the "whole" way. I won't go into the specifics of what he spoke to me about but the final leg of his surgery would leave him with a functioning sexual organ.

I once read a book on a transgender female to male and he described in detail his whole journey - it certainly was an interesting book.

Wow, see that's what I was wondering about... That's amazing that doctors are able to do that!! It's probably really expensive. I wonder how many people actually take that final step? I just find this all fascinating, I guess because most people never really talk about the details.

I don't really either... I am sure the process is long and super complicated.

Although I don't understand wanting to be transgendered I commend him for following his heart. If it makes him happy and content and the technology is there and he feels comfortable... then go for it. I wish him luck and hope all goes well.

Wow, that is f*****g sick!! I mean it is incredible that is even possible. I bet it must be very VERY expensive to do this. I can only imagine all the process and work the surgeons have to put into this. Amazing.

It's a difficult concept to imagine, but I believe that someone who does this was genetically meant to be the sex they are "changing" into...so their happiness in life may depend on it. I hope we continue to be open-minded and loving to people that deal with this...
