Cheap Clothing, Expensive Handbags

My mom taught me to invest in bags, shoes, and coats because these items get the most wear, and that's what I do. This doesn't mean that I have a closet full of premier bags, shoes, and coats! I have two Burberry coats and one pair of Burberry flats that I wear often. Most of my shoes are Stuart Weitzman (they always fit me!) that I found on sale. They weren't cheap, but they also weren't $400. I'll wear all of these things unless and until they fall apart. My closet full of bootleg pants, though? Not so much (although I keep hoping bootleg pants will come back!).

I know what clothing brands fit and flatter me (AG and Paige for denim, Theory, DVF, Joie, Equipment and Vince for everything else), and almost always buy them on sale. I don't cheap out on my clothes, but I do opt for a few good items that fit over a closet full of cheap, poorly made items. I buy most of my clothes at TJMaxx or online.

Above everything else, clothes should fit well and flatter! Find one or two brands that consistently do both, and you'll be golden!

It sounds like you have great grasp on your personal style and make it work for you

Hahaha! I saw this comic in my FB newsfeed, but with "fabrics" instead (she sews.) It is such a good one!

I think most of us do a mix- I imagine very few of us wear ALL low-end or ALL high-end.

Clothes that are worth investment to ME:

1) Coats/jackets- like many posters already said, it's what people see you in the most in winter & they LAST! I have coats that I've been wearing since grade school

2) Dresses- I love wearing dresses! One of the reasons is that it's such an easy way of putting together an outfit. So I don't mind spending $$ for better design and quality.

3) Clothing made from good materials like cashmere, silk, leather, fur, etc. Needn't have any designer labels, just made of solid, high-quality material. These are always worth the extra coin!

(Most of these I got from Helen Gurley Brown, my life guru)

I like and buy high-end designers occasionally, but rarely at department stores. Mostly it's outlets, eBay, or even thrift shops. I love thrifting when I'm in the mood- my best find was a Christian Dior silk camisole for which I paid less than $5.

Learning more about the industry, I try not to indulge in "fast fashion" much- a couple of times per year, if that, and I only buy things I really love. And once bought, I try to make them last. Wash them in a mesh bag, delicate cycle, hang to dry, all that. Treating cheap F21 dresses like French lace keep them going for years!

More than anything, I like to buy from indie, small-time designers and boutiques. My style is what I like to call "rock'n'roll bag lady with a dash of rich *****" and indie designers are crucial to the first part! Sometimes high-end designers just don't have the aesthetics you need :p

Btw, of course everyone knows that there is fake EVERYTHING... (I was recently shocked to find out there are fakes of cheap Korean cosmetics)

But I was still a little taken aback to find this discussion group dedicated to fake clothing (and some accessories) :sweatdrop:
Some of the brands I'm not familiar with, but there are lots and lots of Saint Laurent, Balmain, Goyard...

Was just reminded of it when this topic came up earlier in the thread.

One of the posts was about fake cologne!! That's madness. I'd be afraid it would eat my flesh away!

I spend money for coats, shoes, and bags. I wear pretty cheap clothes mostly on sale at discount stores. I also buy a lot of scarves. Inexpensive, they last, and they really can add so much to an outfit.
