Please welcome new-to-me Chanel pumps! As much as I love the slingbacks, I prefer the closed back for walking in.

Question: do these look “matronly”? I’m 35 and plan to wear these to work functions and church.. but I wonder if these shoe look dated or makes me look like I’m much older

I'm a big fan of Chanel shoes and love variations of the classic beige/black pump.
To be frank, if you are going to wear these to work/church, assuming your church clothes are on the conservative side, yes, I do think the shoes will look aging. It's not so much the heel to me as the pearls. I think those two rows of pearls together with the block heel can be aging. For outfits with this pump, I would wear very "young, trendy" outfits to make it a fashion statement. I think with a simple dark suit or plain dresses, it can look matronly.

The photos in the link do not represent the pump you purchased...
Look at the photos in the links... most the models are wearing the classic slingbacks, or the model is wearing a pump, the outfit is trendy/young, not conservative church. The pumps in the photo also have a trendier look.

I have the classic slingbacks and love them. I know you don't like them, and neither did I, but maybe try on a pair and see they look. I love how they make my foot look so slim and chic. I hated slingbacks as I wore them in the past and they kept falling off me. The Chanel slingback looks great and stays on. It looks fresh with the block heel because there is skin showing on the side (look at photos in the link, the slingback shows skin making it look very chic). Once I purchased my first slingback, I loved them and now have three slingbacks. They are great, and I wear them everywhere... with jeans, work suits, etc... Maybe try them now. They are classic and timeless too.

Also, for some thought... I've had pumps with pearls, and they do not go everything. I love pearl necklaces, so I am a pearl lover. But I find shoes with pearls very hard to wear if the shoe is a classic style. I find I had to dress more trendy to counter the pumps with pearls and always felt the pearls with pumps looked a bit matronly, so after a little while, I got rid of them. Spiked heels with pearls, trendy. Block heels with pearls, a bit matronly to me.

If you like pearls and low heels, I bought a low kitten round toe pump, and it has two little pearls on the heel. I wear it with suits, and it looks fine. I posted a photo in this thread earlier, and you might be able to find that in the aftermarket if you like that look.
Chanel also makes other variations of the classic beige pump look, so personally, I would get a style without the pearls. That's just me.

Shoes are all preference, and it's what you love. I would say this... if you are having to ask if it's frumpy, you probably think it is. For me, a shoe makes or breaks an outfit, so ask yourself if this shoe were full price at the stores along with other Chanel pumps available today, would you get this pump? It would be a shame to buy this shoe only to tire of it after a few wearings as I did with my earlier pump with pearls on top (my pump only had one row of pearls on top and the heel was the classic 70mm slim cone heel). Even then, the pearls didn't work for me.

Just my two cents. I hope this was helpful for another point of view. Good luck in your decision.

Thank you so much for your reply and honesty! I’ve been thinking about these shoes all morning and also thought that if I had to ask if it’s old fashioned, it probably is. I’m leaning toward returning them and trying the slingbacks instead. The only reason I don’t care for slingback is bc it tends to fall off easily when walking, but I'll have to try on a pair. Thank you again

I think you will love the slingbacks! It's the only slingback that has never fallen off on me, shocking!
The fit and sides make your feet look gorgeous! I hope they work out for you. Good luck!

I have the same pair though in black and white. If you style them with skinny jeans then it’s not aging. It’s all about contrast!

I just wanted to tell you I did my engagement photo shoot in my sling backs (also my first pair and held off on buying them for the same reason - sling backs seemed intimidating and impractical!) and they were amazing, secure, and comfy all day. I wore them in a hilly San Francisco botanical garden and much to my dismay (but they held up and stayed clean!) a forested area with dirt and redwood pines. They are so lovely and I think you will love them for the occasions you are hoping to use them for! If they’re too high for you, maybe try the coco sling flats. I want to add these to my shoe wardrobe someday and when I have tried them on I think they’re just as elegant and versatile as the heeled version. As someone who has orthopedic problems from a knee surgery, I can give them a resounding endorsement :P:heart:

Beautiful! I think I read one person loved them so much she actually wore hers under her wedding dress!
The shoes look gorgeous on you, and the cut makes your legs look nice and long.

Thank you so super much @BigAkoya and @shortstuff3804 !! It was a really fun day and I definitely felt like these shoes helped make it more special. I thought the same thing about the lengthening effect, I am not particularly tall and my legs are shorter than my torso so when I got these photos back, I realized the genius of the way these were designed originally. I did contemplate wearing them as wedding shoes but I have a heavily beaded dress and don't want to scratch them. I am contemplating my dad sandals though as my dancing shoes

Ballets! You need a reason to purchase the Chanel ballets! The ballet style is my favorite style of all time, and I've purchased so many pairs over the years. They are timeless, and literally, they never change!  Talk about staying power. Super comfy. I vote ballets to dance in.. how perfect too... true ballets are dancing shoes!
