Chanel 2.55 IS One Of The Top Five Status Handbags - Well, According To This Article

I agree with Rozee about 4 & 5 (Coach logo pattern & Kate Spade drawstring, respectively). I myself worship at the temple of Chanel 2.55

However, having been in both fashion and journalism careers, I can see why the author wrote it that way. Major magazines need mass appeal; if you're really taking everyone into account, these bags have their place. In suburban strip mall towns, Coach rules the universe. It's their gold-standard, as no one could afford/ choose to purchase Chanel, etc when they have 3 kids, a mortgage and the average family income is lower. Not "low" really; it's just a different mentality, more than anything. One that doesn't exactly suit me, but certainly has it's place in fashion culture.

I am also wondering which publication this article was written for.

There seems to be a huge drop off between 1-3 and then 4-5/ Kate Spade and Coach. In my opinion, it isn't so much about price as it is about these bags being timeless, classic status symbols. In regard to 4-5, I am not really sure which specific bags from Coach and Kate Spade they are talking about. Coach and Kate Spade make bags that change every season and therefore are not really "classics." The Birkin, Chanel flap, and some of the LV styles are pretty much the same bags that existed decades ago with only a few modifications.

Looking at things from the opposite perspective, for many people a Coach is their holy grail bag...and a status symbol. In that sense I can see why the article would perhaps want to represent this.

Overall, I think this article would be more effective if they had done a top 1-10 of classic status bags, this would give a wider range in terms of price and therefore could include designers such as Gucci, Fendi etc. that fit somewhere in between Hermes/Chanel and then Coach.

Coach can hardly be counted as a "status" handbag when just about every other teenager carries one. When I think "status" I think really coveted, at least somewhat exclusive, and maybe not necessarily outrageously expensive but not affordable by everyone. And while certain Coach bags are more expensive than others, and not everyone would dish more than $100 on a handbag, if 13 year olds are carrying authentic Coach, it is NOT a status handbag...

Plus, one time I saw a few ladies at the Coach outlet carry out more than 10 Coach bags... yeah... not really possible with the REAL "status" handbags!

JMO though. There are many other brands that could replace #4 and #5. Bal is definitely one of them, as other ladies have mentioned.

Old thread, but good discussion anyway :)

Either way these are considered to be brand names to others.

It's like looking at buying a certain brand of car. If you buy a Porcshe you are considered of highest status vs someone who drives a honda of low status. But that's exactly with Coach and Kate Spade because they aren't really low status.

If you go anywhere in the world, people are still going to know Coach and Kate Spade as brand names.

We all have to remember that the bags we buy are for brand name and to associate ourselves with status and where we are in Social Class. I know many of you are going to say that you are buying for quality, for that timeless, classic piece but to be honest it's the craftsmanship that matters.

I have all different brands which include LV, Gucci, Coach, and Chanel. I can tell you one thing that Coach and LV probably makes the most durable handbags and are affordable to me. Coach also has higher price point products that go anywhere from 300-1000 and LV gives me the timeless look. I hate Gucci for that crap craftmanship and durability of the leather. I love Chanel but after noticing that the stitching is starting to come off under the flap, it bothers to know that anyone of us spends 3000 on a handbag to have it do that within only two times using it. But at the end of the day, the bag brings us the status.

i echo everyone's sentiments over #4 and 5. very true for hermes, chanel and lv.
everyone is entitled to his own opinion. for me balenciaga and fendi should go for 4 and 5. or balenciaga for 3 instead of lv. been to france and saw more people carrying lv. love its durability though. i love chanel now better than lv.
