Thanks so much! I've carried the bag several times and I always receive comments and compliments - it's very unusual and the color is gorgeous! I am so glad that my rehab worked out well.

I also have a Cashin for Meyers bag(drawstring). You're right, they are rare...I bathe or wipe down the bag with Dove(liquid body soap) and they come out just fine. BTW,beautiful bag....:p

Would you show us some pics of your drawstring bag? I'd love to see her!

You did a great job. It makes me want to rehab my legacy. Do you think the product can be used on legacy leather?

I have never tried to rehab a lined bag (or a legacy bag) so you should ask for advice from others. I have heard that you have to be careful using leather conditioners on legacy bags because when the leather absorbs the conditioner they may make the lining wet and the colors may bleed and run.

Before using any product on a legacy bag, I suggest pulling the lining out of the bag and experimenting by applying a small amount of product to a non-visible area and then waiting to see how it affects the bag. If you do apply a product, let it dry thoroughly before putting the lining back in.

There are tpfers that have rehabbed legacy bags so you should do a search and/or reach out for their advice. Good luck!

A few weeks ago I won a burgandy "Bonnie Cashin for Meyers" hippie on ebay for $13.48 plus $9 S&H. Dem Ram kindly authenticated it and told me that the bag was from the mid 1970's after Bonnie Cashin left Coach. She also advised me that she had once given a bath to a Cashin for Meyers bag and the leather dried out and cracked and she had to throw it away!

After the bag arrived, I tried surface cleaning it but soon realized that it was much dirtier than it appeared in the auction pics. Also, the bag had a very unpleasant odor (that had not been mentioned in the auction!) I tried various methods to improve the smell but soon recognized that the bag had suffered mildew during it's life and the smell wasn't going to go away easily!

There was no way that I was going to wear a nasty, dirty, smelly bag so I decided to wash it. Not only that, I even treated the inside of the bag with a dilute bleach solution to kill the mildew! But I am so glad that Dem Ram warned me about the potential leather drying problem because I took extra caution to avoid letting it dry out too quickly. After washing it, I turned it inside out and stuffed it with towels to slow down the drying process.

Beebpurse had recommended visiting a local riding shop where I found a leather therapy product. After I removed the towels and turned the bag right side out I applied the therapy oil regularly during the drying process. The bag came out beautifully clean, soft and supple. Best of all it smells great!

The auction had revealed that the stitching on one of the straps had partially separated where it attached to the bag. After cleaning and moisturizing the bag I took it to a cobbler and had the strap repaired. I just picked it up tonight and it looks perfect!

Here are some before pics, I will post after and modeling pics attached to subsequent messages. I hope you like my new (old!) bag as much as I do!:D

Wow! I've never seen a "Bonnie Cashin for Meyers" hippie bag before. Thanks for posting this, katev. It's a real treasure and you've restored it so beautifully. The same goes for all your other restoration projects.

I wish I could get my hands on some of the vintage classics that you've snagged but the thrift stores in Australia have only crap and Coach isn't big here. In fact, there isn't even a Coach store or a department store that sells Coach in the state I live in.

I realize this is an older thread but I've spent a few hours researching methods for treating mold/mildew both the look and the smell of it. I caught this rehab post which I'd read a while ago, but was glad to see it again. So the diluted bleach wash didn't seem to hurt the color!!? The red on this is so pretty. I've got a couple of great bags I need to get started on, and of course I'm worried about damaging the bags but they are un-usable now. One is all leather ( awesome blue Cashin inspired skinny tote w/ kisslock) , and the other one is a Bonnie Cashin original skinny tote with the legacy lining but it is WHITE (good for outer bleaching but don't wanna wreck that inner lining). My work is CUT OUT for me!! But these two bags are so worth trying to save. If you have words of wisdom I am all "ears". I am compiling my collected research and going for it later this week.
