I have a pink roadster. Its such a subtle pink. I think it makes a large masculane watch a bit more feminine. I get lots of compliments on the pink face.

I do have a few other basic face watches so I thought the pink would be a different choice.

Now I feel better about my pink roadster!
To wired1, I totally agree with what you said on choices of gold for the LOVE bracelets. Now, what do you or anyone else reading this think about the ones with semiprecious stones? Should I be asking here? We have a Cartier Love Chat thread but I don't know if you follow that. So thanks for responding here!

I will respond here, because I tend to not read 45 page threads LOL! Heck, after 3 pages I start to nod off!

Anyway, I am a unique egg (around these parts anyhow) in that I am not a fan of brand name jewelry. I find it to be insultingly overpriced, and with no tangible difference to an unbranded piece save for 5000% price difference.

I am in no way bashing Cartier Jewelry; it's exquisite. But I can get an 18k gold ring with .50 of VVS, D diamonds (pave') for $750. They want $7500. This tends to make me dislike them.

This is a very, very subjective thing, so there is no right or wrong, but I am just sharing my two pennies.

In fact, recently I bought my first piece of designer jewelry because it was a style I could simply not find anywhere else. However, I was quickly reminded that the quality is not different because I paid more.

I think brand name jewelry is silly. Don't take that to read that it IS silly. Not if it makes the wearer happy. But for my money, I can get 10 18k gold bangles for my wife for the price of ONE LOVE bangle. KWIM?

Watches fare differently by these standards in that there is a level of artistry and hand craftsmanship that goes into each one, and there is a clear quality difference between a $500 watch and a $5000 watch... MOST of the time.

Cartier LOVE bracelets are made in Thailand and mass produced. To pay a premium for that goes beyond my appreciation for fine things.

Now, a Wellendorf enamel ring or a similar artisan piece... that's where I fully appreciate the premium price.

Hope I don't offend anyone. Just sharing my vantage point.

As a side note, my wedding band is 18k white gold, and has 4 cttw. of VS/G diamonds. I paid $1350. It is a VERSION of a Damiani, and the Damiani one with .25 cttw (a full 3.75 LESS!) costs $2850. I was told if they made my ring it would run about $20k. Stupid. No matter what one can or can't afford, overpaying is always silly, to me.

Sorry for the rant, but I guess it comes down to this: I have an appreciation for fine jewlery and fine timepieces. Cartier's LOVE collection is neither unique or unusual, and so in my book it does not deserve the pricetag it carries. :(

I tend to believe people wear it to feel a faux prestige that the brand carries, moreso than because they truly love the design. If they loved the design so much, there are a million versions, in 18k solid gold, at your local jeweler for 1/1oth the price.:smile1:

I have the white face roadster and I love it. It was a law school grad gift from my bf and he said he almost bought me the pink but then decided against it, mostly for the same reasons already expressed. And yes, the watch does scratch easily but probably not more than similar watches. You can take it to Cartier to have the scratches buffed out occasionally.

I guess I should have clarified at the beginning that I have lots of watches---a rado, tag link with diamonds, gucci, dior chris 47, philip stein, 2 Michael Kors, movado. So the cartier roadster won't be my one and only. I appreciate all the well thought out comments they help. I'm definitely drawn to the pink, but since this isn't what I'd consider a low end watch I was concerned about getting a color I might later feel is trendy.

My two pennies...

Save cute colors for cute watches. That Cartier is a pretty significant timepiece, IMO. Therefore, my suggestion is the white as it will remain classic, and elegant forever.

If you want a pink watch, buy something less expensive that, should you grow out of it, you will not mind so much!

Good luck!:D

TOTALLY agree!!

wired1 - I agree with many of your points. One was "if it makes the wearer happy" even though we all agree that it is overpriced. Some on TPF are into high-end name watches, others are quite satisfied with Michele and Michael Kors. They are serve the same purpose in telling time. But like you said - If it makes the wearer happy."
My father has 3 very very expensive luxury cars. I will be thrilled to drive a Toyota Camry for the rest of my life. I see a car as getting from point A to point B and couldn't care less about the prestige or name. Finally, a benefit of designer jewelry (I think), is the investment factor. I know rolex holds value and I'm guessing Cartier does as well. So if I have an item that I love and wear everyday for 10 years, I'm guessing if I decide on a change, I would be able to get a pretty good price for it. Perhaps I might even get back what I paid. I don't know if this is true for not designer jewelry. What do you think?

Hokaplan,

My reply is based on personal experience and 20 years of buying/selling jewelry and watches.

Other than some models of Panerai and Rolex, no watches that sell in the under $35,000 range hold any more than about 25-35% of their value used in mint condition.

The reason for this are many and varied, but as of late it is largley in part due to the Internet.

Cartier watches are available widely online for 25-50% off retail. Take that discount, add depreciation in, and that is likely what your watch will sell for the minute it leaves the store. So figure, if you wore it for a year, you MIGHT get back 30% of it's value.

Name brand jewelry is a transient thing. The style always changes, making the subjective value of it disappear once the style is "out of fashion".

Once Tiffany stops selling Keys, or moreso, starts selling a "hotter and trendy-er" item, try selling that key necklace to anyone, let alone for close to what you paid for it... KWIM?

As Panerai and Rolex are not available for much less than they retail for ANYWHERE, and given that they constantly raise their prices, getting 50% or more back on a used one is typical. A rare model will fetch more.

To be clear, Cartier watches in no way holds the same value as Cartier Jewelry. Not even close. The watches are considered by watch collectors, to be "fashion watches" with a high price tag. Unfair, sure. But nonetheless, the resale value is just not there.

JTV.com, has a Cartier watch for almost half off retail right now... that says it all. Watches with high resale value are those that are rare, or that can't be had via secondary channels for a steep discount; again, brands like Rolex and Panerai which try harder than most to prevent steep discounting hold their value best, and still not WELL.

Does this make sense?

I think I get it. So the rolex might get 50% back later, but Cartier Love (like the Tiffany keys you described) is trendy and might not be of any great value later? I'm thinking of my 7 year old daughter in future. If she gets these pieces when she is eighteen, she will likely get more for a trade-in rolex than a trade in Cartier Love bracelet. I had no idea that one could purchase a Cartier watch online for 25-50% off retail. Do others on TPF know this? Perhaps the person who had the OP here might want to purchase her roadster online.

Just reread your last post. It sounds like you said Cartier watches are less valuable than Cartier jewelry. Is that true and if so, why do you think that is? Also, in comparing Cartier to Tiffany, there is a ton more pieces in Tiffany collections. So I would think that maybe a lot more of the Tiffany items are "trendy". But I really do not know. You have much more experience than me! In your opinion, which Cartier Love bracelets do you think would hold most value:plain, 1/2 diamond, or one with 10 semiprecious stones? TIA!

I guess the easiest thing for me to say is this: Jewelry and watches are some of the worst investments you can make. This holds true for all brands, styles, and types.

I do not honestly know which Cartier piece will hold it's value best, to be honest.

What I can say, is that the watches are less valuable because they are an afterthought of the brand. Not what they are known for, per se'.

There will always be someone who chimes in with "I sold my XYZ piece for 75% blah blah blah". But the only fair advice to give is that MOST LUXURY items, save for a few, are worthless once you own them. At least in terms of recouping your investment to any great success.

Buy what you love. Wear it. Enjoy it. If you are looking for an investment... open a bank account, LOL! You know what I mean :p;)

Short of a few items per brand that become "must haves" and are no longer produced, none of this stuff holds any of it's value past the moment you take it home.

Again, this is why I say if it's the look that intrigues you, and not the allure of a brand prestige, you should buy unbranded.

Enjoy whatever you buy, and smile every day you wear it! :D

I like the pink roadster too! But as what most have said, I'd go for a classic color if I only have 1 high end watch but again, being me, I love variety so I'm very sure a Roadster won't be my one and my last so I'll get a pink face since I've own a few watches. Colored dials will spice up my collection. Cartier watches are generally overpriced so I'd probably get a Rolex especially the new Datejust II which they are coming up with.

I did know this and had planned to buy my Roadster on amazon.com for about $3100 with a 2 year warranty. I bought my Tag Link with diamonds from them about a year and a half ago and saved a similar amount. I agree with wired1, I just have not seen jewelry hold their value. Even my high end jewelry, one of my favorites is Michael B, he works in platinum and diamonds,.. exquisite work, I've seen pieces here and there sold for less than half of the retail on ebay. In the case of a used and usually scratched watch, most people would go for the new one discounted from one of the watch discounters.
