Cartier E-ring pricing---what in the world?

Are you completely decided that you want to go with Cartier or Tiffany? You can get a non-branded ring a lot cheaper (just asking, not trying to be a smart aleck). I have a 2.11 J/VVS1 that we purchased in December 2002 from a wholesaler and it was just under $8K.

Lol---you aren't being a smart aleck---thats a very good question. I'm not 100% certain yet b/c we've only visited 3 stores (Tiffany, Cartier and a local store) but I think we are trending that way. Going up to NYC in August so I'm sure there will be many more options there

WOW---Gingerfarm---your fiance is a KEEPER!!!! nice job...Does anyone else have "negoiation" stories"? You are right though---half the "battle" is not be intimidated by them b/c they are high end and just start asking---I mean if they say no, its not the end of the world....

Wow, Clanalois, you are upgrading your e-ring? Lucky girl!!!

My fiance is in Japan right now...so I called him and asked so I can tell you guys. He's like, "you called me long distance...for THAT???" ;)

Here's what he said,
He went to Tiffany said to the SA, "I really like this ring, but it's out of my price range."
SA says, "It's one of the best rings out there."
Fiance says, "I would really like to get it, but here is what I can get at these other stores (insert high-end store)."
SA goes talks to manager and comes back with a better price.

This is the simplified version, and there was a lot of research involved at different stores before. You need to know exactly what you want and negotiate the price on the exact one you want.

Also keep in mind that my fiance is a really good negotiator...he basically does this on a daily basis, so that helps. I didn't believe that he's good, until he showed me that you could get the price down at Tiffany...then I believed him. I think that it's also that people are scared to negotiate at Tiffany, so they don't try too hard, but it doesn't mean it's not do-able.

Hope this will help you all! Good Luck!

AMAZING! I've just shared this with my hubby and he will try next time; a gentle reminder to our SA that we've been her loyal customer for years. :)

He's getting me another ring, not an upgrade; a much bigger, flashier one. If you've seen diamondfan's or KristyDarling's on Pricescope, something along those lines. I'll wear my original e-ring every day, and wear the bigger one for a night out or on my R hand at home.

Thanks for the advice. I was previously under the impression that one could not get a discount at Tiffany's, but now that I know it's possible, we will make it our goal to get a discount.

:okay:

If you are a repeat customer at cartier and use the same SA, its not unusual to get a 10% discount on things like a watch (over $5k). Tiffany's does have discounts - called corporate accounts (15%) but diamonds are usually excluded. However, its possible that the SA can do something to help you out if he really wants a commission! Good luck and congrats!

Cartier is just expensive in general, with diamonds. My friend spent $10000 plus on her e-ring, and then another $4000 plus on the wedding band. Diamonds are marked up hugely, and then add a designer name behind it and it goes way up. BTW congratulations!!!

WOW! if you're talking about a 3ct+ from Tiffany, you better be able to get a discount for it! I think you need to put some pressure on your SA.

Gosh, I wish our SA at Tiffany's would come right out and offer a discount. Neither my DH nor I have it in us to bring up the subject.

We're looking to upgrade my e-ring that my DH bought me 30 years ago. Ironically, he bought it at a small local jewelry store and I've always said it's the prettiest little diamond I've ever seen. The store closed shortly after that.

Lo and behold, we went shopping to Tiffany's on Saturday and who was our SA??? The owner (and SA) of the jewelry store who sold my DH my original engagement ring 30 years ago! They remembered each other!

I have my heart set on a Tiffany Solitaire, 2.06 carats, F, VS1. It's a possibility, but my DH thinks it's a little more than he wants to comfortably spend. He is totally okay with buying from Tiffany's, though, so we may end up sacrificing the size or color or something to lower the price.

Anyway, back on topic. If the SA would just offer to give us a little incentive, I could dance out of the store with my new ring!

Wow, what a wonderful story!!! I'm sure your husband can score a price decrease. Let us know how everything goes!!!

VVS1 is almost flawless afterall. And once it reaches the 2ct mark, prices jump hard.

Why don't you try for something just under 2ct (like 1.9 or sth) in VS1-VS2. That might be a better value?

I know you can bargain the price at Tiffany if your ring is $100k or above and it's not difficult, although I don't know how much discount my friend eventually got.

Maybe you can check out Harry Winston, too. They definitely offer a discount on their diamond rings depending on the price.

Leelee-
I work in a family owned jewelry store but I'm pretty sure the approach is still the same as Tiffany/Cartier, etc. A SA will NEVER offer you a discount - if they do, they're not doing their job. HOWEVER, you could simply ask if this is the best you can expect on the price. And given that I Do work in a retail environment, I never ask myself when out shopping for furniture, cars, etc. Not comfortable doing that, so I do know how you and your DH feels - best of luck.:D

cartier is priced higher than tiffanys. i asked the sa at cartier about "discounts" and he said they do it for big ticket items but did not tell me the $ mark when it becomes negotiable. but then again, the economy sucks and it doesn't hurt to ask. gl.

My dad is a gemologist & says that the price goes up exponentially with carat size. i.e. it is more rare to find a larger diamond that is the same (or close) specs and thus, the price is much higher.
