I've never heard of Magic Eraser...what the heck is it:confused1: ..and how do you use it to clean the Vachetta Leather parts of your bags??

Well I have only been on this forum a few times but I felt I had to jump in. The Magic Eraser that is used for cleaning leather is NOT MR CLEAN MAGIC ERASER. It is a white artgum eraser you get at any shoe store and it also happens to be called "Magic Eraser". Please don't use Mr. Clean on your bags. Mr. Clean has bleach and it dries out leather. However, the shoe cleaner artgum eraser is quite safe to use. It is real slow and tedious work but it does do a nice job.

If you have any cracks in your leather though, there isn't much you can do about it, but if it is just dirty, you can easily clean it.

I don't recommend Magic Eraser unless it's a really old bag you don't care about. I used it on an older Speedy 25 (before I bought my new one in February) and ended up having to get rid of that Speedy. While it did lighten dark handles, it was so abrasive that it damaged the leather terribly. No amount of conditioning ever really brought back the sheen and prettiness of the vachetta leather handles. I was SO SO sorry I did it. The bag really wasn't that bad - just a little darker on the top of the handles, but it had a really beautiful sheen before I started with the Magic Eraser. I would never use it on any of my bags now. Any kind of eraser, use carefully, but steer completely clear of the Magic Eraser.

I completely agree: only use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on your "throw around bags". After using it on the trim of my Batignolles Horizontal, the leather is so dry that it has begun cracking. The leather trim looks very dull and I haven't been able to bring back the bag to its pre-Magic Eraser look. I would advise that you stick with less abrasive erasers and cleaning agents. I'm kind of sorry that I used....thankfully I didn't use it on the straps of my bag.

Maybe you should try a white pencil eraser like others have suggested. There aren't any chemicals in that sort of eraser. Whatever method you choose, BE GENTLE!

Charleston...scary, I did the same thing with my old speedy......it was so shiny and now the handles are so dull and lifeless.....:crybaby: :crybaby:

Mr Clean magic eraser is great if you know how to use it. It does dry out the leather a bit, but you just have to condition the leather afterwards with applegard or other leather conditioner. You just have to make sure you wring out the sponge so that there is very little water left on it. Mr Clean ME doesn't have any household cleaners on it. It made the bottom of my Alma look great. I will see if I can find some before and after pictures.

I found this at a Cleaning LV thread...
I tried it on my cousins dirty speedy handles and it worked great!
I then applied apple conditioner after I cleaned it.

I conditioned mine heavily with applegard and several other leather conditioners (really good ones). I also wrung the sponge out till almost dry (like I had heard to do) - It literally ruined my bag. I would never ever use it again. I used it on the bottom of my Drouot (similar to the bottom of an Alma) and it worked okay on that - of course, it doesn't matter so much how that feels - it's on the bottom). My speedy was no longer fun to carry - it was just awful. I literally sat on the couch for hours rubbing in conditioners trying to bring it back to life - it would be pretty for a day or so - then back to dry and lifeless. I got rid of it. It made me very sad.

The Magic Eraser that most people talk about here, on Alva, and on other boards actually is the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - and that's the one that is so harsh.

I have used pencil or artgum erasers on small tiny spots and that works okay but I still wouldn't recommend going over an entire handle with it - just maybe a pen sized mark.

Please, please - don't use Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on handles - try babywipes instead - much gentler if you do have to use something.

^wow, so sorry to hear!

i would like to 2nd that, i used Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the handles of my lavender bedford (i bought it used). the handles had a very nice patina but they were a bit dark/dirty at the top. on this forum i heard so many rave reviews about magic eraser so i decided to try it. i too had not-so-great results. i think it did take some dirt out, so the handles are maybe a bit lighter but it also took some of the color and the shininess out, so now they're slightly greyish and they're pretty dull.

afterwards applied some apple care conditioner on them, but i'm not sure if it will do anything..i will try again. if i could just restore some of the "shininess" of the vachetta i think it will be ok.

in a nutshell, i wish i hadn't tried using MCME...i would rather have my bag be a little dark/dirty that have such dull/greyish handles!! i agree, MCME is too rough to use on vachetta, IMO.

I've used clean white eraser to remove stains on my light vachetta before and it works well. Be gentle and be sure the eraser is white and clean! I've never tried magic eraser and from the posts here, never will!
