By changing handbags often, do we miss out?

Great thread! I have 22 bags, mostly "designer" bags. I rotaste my bags depending on what I'm wearing, but I do sometimes carry a bag for weeks without switching. I have a few bags that I have "bonded" with that are sentimental for one reason or another. I do have larger sized bags because I'm always carrying a lot of extra things like dental floss, special photographs, asprin etc. My grandma just passed away a year ago, but she also used to carry just one handbag until it wore out and then she would replace it. Not sure where my handbag addiction came from. :thinkin:

I don't believe so. All my handbags are personal to me. Most of them are handpicked by me while one is a gift from my Aunt. All of them are somehow special in their own way. Each of them carry different sides of me. But there's only one handbag that kind of describes me that I would love to wear everyday. That's my LV Speedy B. But since I'm such a fun and colorful person, I can't imagine using one handbag for the rest of my life. I mean, I married one guy and will stick to him for the rest of my life. And that's a big commitment that I will not do on just one bag. Hahaha! I am polygamous when it comes to bags! 😝

I am polygamous too when it comes to bags!
;)

As I love each and everyone of my bags, I really take good care of each and everyone of them. And I feel so proud and happy when I give them away to my sisters, cousins, Aunts and goddaughters knowing that I have given them a piece of me. I also make it a point that the bag I give fits the personality of the person I'm giving it too. So I definitely bonded with each and everyone of my bags cuz I pick special people in my life to give them to. 😀

At a young age, I was taught to never, ever go into a lady's handbag.

This reminds me of that quote in "How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days" where MM has the handbag sitting on his desk:
Ben: Guys, a woman's purse, alright, it's her secret source of power. Alright? There are many dark and dangerous things in there, that we, the male species, should know nothing about.

LOL, it's so true though! I truthfully don't remember my grandmother's purses but I do remember they were always metallic of some sort (gold, silver lol). And every time she'd open it, piles of Kleenex would just come out. Piles upon piles. I never knew how she found anything in that bag with all that tissue. I think it influenced me though, as I find that all I carry in my bag are the essentials, I never carry makeup (because I'm afraid if something opens or breaks it will cause a mess)... But, OP, I think you have a point about not using one bag for an extended period of time. When I go out and I see an elderly lady with her clearly loved Louis Vuitton and it's all "beat up" and has patina I think, gosh, I wish my LV's looked that loved! But then I like keeping my things looking new too, so it's a catch 22 for me! At the same time, I switch out my bags about once a week depending on my mood. My LV's don't get as much use as they did when I first got them, my Stephen Sprouse Roses is starting to patina rather nicely, but every time I take one out of it's dust bag it's like saying hello to an old friend. In that aspect I suppose I feel pretty bonded with my bags, regardless.

When my mother went to work full-time back in the 1970s she had multiple handbags, and they were huge because she needed to carry so many things for her different roles. She had a tote for work. And a big snazzy patent leather bag for the weekends. When we were bored and sitting in a waiting room or something like that we always had some fun seeing what improbable object would fall out of the purse she was carrying at the time. One time it was a hammer!

I know this is an old thread, but I'm really enjoying the responses, particularly this one! LOL, I love that!

Love this thread!

I have 5 bags plus an evening clutch, and that's it.

I enjoy my bags, and they are part of my signature as I rotate regularly.

I have gotten to the point where I have a bag for every situation, and that makes me content with what I have.

I'm revisiting this thread. Realized I posted ~3 years ago.

I have many bags but this year, as a result of reading the thread about shopping from our bag wardrobe, I intend to rotate between 3 for half a year, then 3 for the second half (winter/summer).

At one point, I really do want to whittle down to just 1 handbag, but a purely luxurious and wonderful one - it will be around the time of my retirement years. By that time, I'll have time to rotate bags, but I'd rather be busy touring the world with just the one bag!

This is a great thread! I do miss having just one bag that I use till it starts to fall apart. I often think about going back to doing that again, but I don't think I could since I now love all my bags and when I pull a new one out it's like seeing an old friend again and I fall in love with it all over again. Right now I'm trying to change out once a month at least and I'm actually really enjoying doing that.
But yes, I do miss having that special bond with just one bag for a long time.
I also kind of miss back when I didn't really know much about the designers and the supposed status each bag has attached to it or whether it was inspired by this or that designer, and I could just see a bag I liked and buy it in complete ignorance about what the bag might be "saying" to everyone I see.

This question was actually what prompted me to create the New Year's resolution that I did - I am not going to purchase any new purses in 2013. Here's my collection right now:

Purses for 2013

Mostly Coach Legacy, but I tried to make sure I didn't duplicate colors or styles: I have one tote, one duffle, one satchel, one messenger, one crossbody, one shoulder bag, and then my Reed Krakoff hobo (my one lux purchase). I love each of my bags for different reasons, but I find myself missing the Reed Krakoff most of all and keep going back to that one. I really find myself wanting that red to be my "signature"; I think I subconsciously picked the red b/c I was almost named Scarlett ;)

All my bags are very personal to me. I picked them out very carefully and they are usually paid for with $$$ I received from DH for birthdays, anniversaries, etc.- this makes me even more careful because if I part with a bag, I am parting with a gift from DH. I use at least 3-4 different bags a week and rarely stay with one bag for more than a couple days. I also buy bags that will last me for years, so I don't do the trendy stuff.

Try as I might I don't remember my grandmother's bag or bags. I do remember my mom's and she only had a few which she used depending on the occasion. The one I remember the most is a gold glittery one that she kept wrapped in a beautiful shawl - both of which she would wear only on special occasions. I take them out to look at them both almost every time I visit. :smile1:

Very interesting.

I've been trying to get rid of some of my stuff, and use old things up.

I have tons of body sprays and some purfumes. I don't think any are really my signature scent these days since I use a different one each day. I recently was given Chanel No. 5 and have been using that almost daily instead. I think I'm hooked and might make that my signature scent.

My old roommate had only one of any given item. She had one purse. One body spray. One perfume. One Scentsy wax. One t-shirt quilt. One memento box-- a small jewelry box she made as a kid. I kind of envy her for not having many possessions. She spent her money by going on one vacation per month. She rarely bought material things. I think that's a good quality to have.

I like variety... in bags, body sprays/perfumes, shoes, and just about everything. But, I am trying to lessen the amount of stuff I have and have better quality of the items I do have. Maybe I'll eventually have a few handbags that are my signature item.

Another question is...

If we don't have a signature item, does that only other people... or us too?

Would a bag we use for 20 years be like a childhood teddy bear/security blanket?

Do we enjoy variety or signature items more?

Are people who only use one bag or one perfume missing out on anything too?

Are the people with one item missing out on variety and fun?

I buy bags, shoes, perfumes, etc. as a "treat."

What were peoples "treats" 50 or 100 years ago?

Were they missing out on luxuries and the excitement of getting a new item?

Are we missing out, or were they missing out? Hmm...
