By changing handbags often, do we miss out?

I remember my grandmother's handbag. It was always the same one, and it was like a mobile miniaturized version of grandma's house. It contained almost anything you could possibly conceive of needing while away from home. An Eagle Scout would have approved.

At a young age, I was taught to never, ever go into a lady's handbag. So, of course, I began to be curious as to what was inside!

By carrying the same bag, all the time, that purse becomes a bit of a signature wardrobe piece. Special. Kind of like the teddy bear who became real because of the love of a little girl. LOL:smile1: When they auctioned off Jackie Kennedy's fake pearl necklace, someone paid over $200,000 for it because it was the one she wore all the time. If she had 20 necklaces which she rotated amongst, I wonder if all 20 would have fetched the same price.

I change my handbag two or three times a week, and even so, I have bags that haven't seen the light of day for months. I sometimes feel like I am missing out on the opportunity to 'bond' with a bag and have that bag 'bonded' to me by using it constantly for a long, extended period. I am conflicted because I like to coordinate my bag with my outfit, also, I like lots of different bags.

Does anybody know what I mean? I guess what I am trying to say is that by switching purses so often, I feel that my bags become less personal, and certainly less intimate, and therefore lose some of the mystique that I feel a bag should hold. Maybe part of my issue is that I clean out my purses so thoroughly and I am so sparing in what I put in them, that my bags could belong to almost anyone, except for my driver's license inside.

Thoughts, anyone?
I haven't read the whole thread, so my apologies if I am off topic or this has come up before.
Maybe it's a little different take on the signature bag, but I absolutely have one. My friends and family just expect I will be carrying it at all times. And it is true 90% of the time. It is one of those situations where if I don't have it, that's when they notice.
This was not planned by any means, but it just ended up being the case. I fell in love with a bag and carry one religiously (except for breaks for my Valentinos)
Even the tpfers here know me by the bag I carry.
My signature bag: Marc Jacobs Stam. So it's not the same 1 bag - it's the same bag in 18 different colors.
(Prettier with the chain on, but it is exhausting to get them all out of their cubbyholes and out of their dust covers)
And by the way - I am a grandma! :D And, yes, my grandchildren know my bags, and my granddaughter always looks for the color of the day and says how pretty it is. When we are shopping and see one, she always goes to them and looks and asks if I have that color. LOL!

Hey nascar!!! Just had to say.... Sexy legs there!!! :-). Your collection is always drool worthy! ;-)

Hi there!! Good to see you.
Anything exciting going on lately?

Yeah, I didn't realize my knees were so knobby until I looked at that pic.
Lol! Knobby knees? Nope. Not at all. All is well thanks and you? Been into some new things lately and my daughter starts school tomorrow. One more year home with my youngest before he starts. :-)

LOVE this thread, such an interesting concept and question OP. I have too been having this very discussion with DBF lately, and he was saying "I don't care how much you spend on a bag, but if you are going to buy it--you better use it". He is so right. I keep on buying new bags and switching them out so frequently that I am not getting the chance to actually use them and bond with them. It is even to the point that people at work are starting to notice and make comments to me like, "do you ever carry the same purse, how many bags do you have?" embarrassing! This may have just pushed me over the edge to sell some of my collection!
Hey. Don't be embarrassed. You like what you like. Lots of people I know have all sorts of collections. Baseball cards - clothes - jewels - watches. - scarves. It's ok to have multiples of what you like because you like it. I would not like for you or anyone to feel that way over their purse collection. Kwim?

I miss my time when I only have a few bags, too. Now that I have too many bags, I have to rotate to justify them. It's exhausted. And those that don't get used look kinda sad. :( I really think I'm missing out on all the fun of having simplified collection.

i could not agree more. especially re: the non used bags looking sad. i am trying to simplify and hone my collection.

very cool collection. you know what you like. fabulous.

I think of my bags not as a collection, but as a wardrobe. Just as I have certain clothes and boots I love, I don't wear them everyday.I change with the season, the occasion, and (more often than not) my mood. It keeps things fun and fresh and doesn't diminish my love for any of my bags.:sunshine:
