I haven't read the whole thread, so my apologies if I am off topic or this has come up before.I remember my grandmother's handbag. It was always the same one, and it was like a mobile miniaturized version of grandma's house. It contained almost anything you could possibly conceive of needing while away from home. An Eagle Scout would have approved.
At a young age, I was taught to never, ever go into a lady's handbag. So, of course, I began to be curious as to what was inside!
By carrying the same bag, all the time, that purse becomes a bit of a signature wardrobe piece. Special. Kind of like the teddy bear who became real because of the love of a little girl. LOLWhen they auctioned off Jackie Kennedy's fake pearl necklace, someone paid over $200,000 for it because it was the one she wore all the time. If she had 20 necklaces which she rotated amongst, I wonder if all 20 would have fetched the same price.
I change my handbag two or three times a week, and even so, I have bags that haven't seen the light of day for months. I sometimes feel like I am missing out on the opportunity to 'bond' with a bag and have that bag 'bonded' to me by using it constantly for a long, extended period. I am conflicted because I like to coordinate my bag with my outfit, also, I like lots of different bags.
Does anybody know what I mean? I guess what I am trying to say is that by switching purses so often, I feel that my bags become less personal, and certainly less intimate, and therefore lose some of the mystique that I feel a bag should hold. Maybe part of my issue is that I clean out my purses so thoroughly and I am so sparing in what I put in them, that my bags could belong to almost anyone, except for my driver's license inside.
Thoughts, anyone?
Maybe it's a little different take on the signature bag, but I absolutely have one. My friends and family just expect I will be carrying it at all times. And it is true 90% of the time. It is one of those situations where if I don't have it, that's when they notice.
This was not planned by any means, but it just ended up being the case. I fell in love with a bag and carry one religiously (except for breaks for my Valentinos)
Even the tpfers here know me by the bag I carry.
My signature bag: Marc Jacobs Stam. So it's not the same 1 bag - it's the same bag in 18 different colors.
(Prettier with the chain on, but it is exhausting to get them all out of their cubbyholes and out of their dust covers)
And by the way - I am a grandma!
