Buying expensive handbags superficial or more of a hobby?

I don't do it to show off at all. When I bought my first designer bag I loved it so much that I wanted nothing to do with my other bags. they just seemed so cheap and flimsy for me. I don't care what other people think, it's what I think

I adore ppl that don't care about what ppl think. So many ppl don't choose what's best for them or make the right decision because they put other folks opinions ahead of their own. I say do what makes you happy. Buying bags are a hobby of mine and I love a bag that can last for years to come.

Hobby for me. Other than a handful of people, no one here has a clue as to what I'm carrying and how expensive my bags are.

Me too. I love them and to me, they are like pieces of art. I also like knowing that the bags I am buying now are durable and good quality and I can pass them down to my daughter. They are an investement :smile1:

I think of them as pieces of art too. I just love my bags. I buy with the intention of keeping my bags for years to come as well.

This! I don't give a rat's patootie what anyone thinks; I buy what I like. Sometimes it's Hermes; sometimes it's Coach; sometimes it's Target. Nobody 'round where I grew up has any clue what H is, really, so if one were to show off there, they'd be in for a sore disappointment when nobody knew who that designer was they were sporting! :D Maybe that's why I'm not in it to show off but because of a genuine love of fashion as an art form.

Lol. Love it! I agree. I carry Gucci LV Marshall's or Ross whatever it maybe or MK. It doesn't matter just as long as you enjoy what you've purchased. =)

My husband has several hobbies that I don't understand and have no inerest in, on which he spends more than I spend on bags. I'm thrilled to walk down the street with my LV (or Coach or LAMB) and he pretends to understand me and I pretend to understand why he wants a 50 year old computer!

Like men who love their cars or collecting expensive trains. Do we as women really love our handbags the same or is it just to show off?

Think of it as a piece of history! Women and Men were carrying bags loooooooong before there were trains or cars or golf. Each bag is a piece of art in the buyer's eyes or why else would you buy one particular bag or like one brand over another? Throw the History angle at them!

I buy expensive handbags because I like the quality. I more accustom to high quality leather and stitching these days. None of my friends or co-workers could even name a single bag I have, so I don't do it to show off.

Both--I love them and for the first time in my life--to show off. But now I live in LA. It is a practical matter because here people know luxury goods and evaluate you based on superficial stuff.

If it was to show off they wouldn't be stuck in my closet unused

I bought into the hype and just bought a Hermes. Have yet to carry it.

they are like pieces of art.

I fantasize about owning more expensive leather art in different skins and colors, and they would probably be admired more than carried.

That is a lot of pretending! a 50 year old computer! Hope he doesn't expect to display his collection predominantly. Yikes! :p
