I think that bags that have good immediate resale value (meaning that you will get about 80% return within a year of use) are: Chanel and Balenciaga. Balenciaga bags are reselling for only $100 or $150 less than what they were purchased for. Some bbags go for over retail value despite the fact that they are years old. The cause for this is Balenciaga's discriminating color-to-season offerings. Most colors produced by Balenciaga are only available in a certain season. After that season production ceases for that color. Some buyers will pay over MSRP to acquire that color. Also, finding the right leather is important. The leather on bbags are not uniform. Some people will pay more the opportunity to own a bbag with sumptiously delicious leather. Seeing the bag and paying a bit more beats ordering one fresh from a department store and getting a bag with terrible leather.

Bags that have down the road resale value is LV, hands down. If you own a Speedy 25 for say, 5 years, you can still sell it later for $400 (as long as it is in decent shape). LV canvas is durable and some of the models are classic and do not go out of style....like the Speedy, Alma, Noe, etc. However, I do not believe that immediate resale value is not good for LV. I see brand new or nearly brand new bags go for hundreds less on Ebay. I believe this has to do with the fact that buyers know if they just spend $100 more they can buy it in the store. They don't have to worry about leather quality or differenciation (like with Chloe or bbag) because LV produces their handbags with cookie cutter precision. It is what most PF'ers depend on to authenticate items. It is because of this, in spite of it, that LV sellers might have a harder time recovering more than 75% of the MSRP.

From my experience, LV definitely has a better resale value than Chanel. I was able to sell my brand new LV off at 70% of the retail while my brand new Chanel was only able to fetch about 60% of the retail value.
