My luggage has not been destroyed and I've been traveling around the world, a lot with it, since the 70s.
As for my Vuitton, Bisten suitcases bought in the 80s, when I got home with them brand new, I took them to the luggage store in my city and had custom made covers made of strong, cotton canvas. The covers are solid-colored and dark brown, like the luggage, and have a double zipper, so I can now put the TSA lock on the two zipper tabs and leave the actual suitcase unlocked.
It cost me very little to have my covers custom made. Therefore my Vuitton luggage still looks very new. I bought all of my Vuitton luggage pieces, in Europe, in the 80s. Now, Vuitton suitcases come with covers.
Vuitton holds up very well even without covers. I've had all of my Keepall bags since the 80s and they are still in excellent condition. And my Vuitton luggage has been on every continent in the world and many times around. When it's been left out in the rain, like on the tarmac in Africa and Europe, back in the day, non of the contents have gotten wet and the rain has never affected the luggage pieces. Plus, it's great to use as a seat when there are no seats available in train stations, etc. So, for me, well worth the investment. I have absolutely no regrets.
As for the Kipling luggage, I've had the same excellent experience. It has also been on every continent many times around and has held up beautifully. The advantage of the Kipling is that it has wheels whereas my Vuitton, Bisten doesn't.
I've owned or still own a lot of different luggage pieces by different companies. Some I need to sell, like my Tumi pieces which I almost never use. They just haven't worked out for my travel situation. I could see using them more for road trips of which I don't take many.
