My kate spade bags are fantastic quality. I have one black Kate spade bag that I use and abuse but it looks as good as the day i bought it 2 years ago. It honestly could pass for like new condition despite how much its been worn. I agree with the rebecca minkoff that the quality doesn't appeal to me. It just looks cheap and not worth even the low price point but maybe its just the bags I've seen.

As of late... I've had experience with the following

1. Kate Spade
Outlet/Retail: Customer service is amazing. I've gotten a small wellesley rachelle in black and its kept up so well over the past 2 years. I've purchased a bag from online as well, the small ella in indigo. I've kept the small wellesley rachelle and sold the small ella. Not because of quality issues but because I wasn't using the bag like I thought I would. Personally I don't really like too many of the designs at the KS outlets/retail except for maybe 1-3 designs. As of lately I can also vouch for her zipped agendas - I've bought and sold a couple and noticed that the newer colors released this summer and late are better quality rings. Theres been a gap period where the rings she was selling (both at the outlets and online/boutiques) were poor quality and often came crooked.

2. Rebecca Minkoff
I've bought 3 pre-loved bags from her, the regan, floral mini mab tote, and floral mini mac. Ive bought one brand new online, the mini avery tote. Her customer service is hands down the worst customer service I've ever had in line with Michael Kors! Their phone lines are fake - you will never be able to reach someone through email nor phone. You can only reach them through their social media accounts. Awful. I've sold my regan because the quality Im sure was there but the leather was so soft and squishy that the bag would sag whenever I put my things in it. It reminds me of the Balenciaga city bag thats why I first got it.. My mini mab tote / mini mac are holding up great! The quality is there for sure.

3. Michael Kors
I've had the large selma and it held up so well! I miss it (I sold it and now regret it).. I also had the small sutton bag but ended up selling that one too. I currently own a medium ingrid satchel There's no logo plate in the front nor back, its actually a very subtle embossing/name plate on the side of the bag.. great for me because I find the MK logo pasted everywhere to be tacky. However, their customer service? Don't get me started on the online "help" I received. They are rude, belittling, and just disrespectful to their customers. Until today I haven't received any further communication and I've even been locked out of my account. here is what happened: http://forum.purseblog.com/threads/how-does-the-warranty-work-for-outlet-bags-on-sale.956695/

4. Coach
I have the hologram keyholder from fall last year and also the rhyder 24 satchel. Love them both! The quality is amazing and I love Coach's new direction. Their silhouettes are amazing but right now theyre way out of my price range. Their customer service is great too.

In my experience:

Coach is not great. I have a black leather satchel that I got in 2010 ish and within a year, the handles were peeling. It just did not hold up well at all. My Coach Kristin hobo has not held up the best either. The tag on the lining on the inside of the bag kind of bleeds through and shows through the back of the bag, lol! I don't even know how to describe it, I'll have to take a pic of it. I really like some of the new bags Coach is coming out with, but I am nervous to buy another Coach bag because the two that I have are failures in quality.

Michael Kors is not the greatest, but better than Coach for me. I have the saffiano burgundy Astrid and it looks like the paint or dye is fading and there are whititsh spots on different parts of my bag. It's not that noticeable to the public, I'm sure, but I can see it right away. It's disappointing, but not as bad as my Coach bags have been.

Dooney and Bourke, now THIS is amazing quality for a bag. I own a leather wristlet that I got in maybe 2010ish? I don't use it a WHOLE lot, but it still looks amazing for being an older piece. And I got the Florentine satchel in 2012. That Florentine satchel is one of my favorites in my collection. It still looks GREAT and I carry it a LOT. The tassels are kind of wrinkly, but that's about it. The leather still looks amazing, no peeling, tearing, or signs of fading. IMO, you cannot go wrong with Dooney.

Henri Bendel. I received a black leather tote for Christmas last year. It is caviar leather, and the bag still looks BRAND NEW like I just bought it and it is a year old. I have carried this purse a lot as well, and there is no sign of wear whatsoever. I am extremely impressed with the quality and will definitely be purchasing from them in the future.

I just received my first Kate Spade for Christmas. It is a beautiful structured tote, pink, and I am interested to see how the quality of this bag will turn out.

The other bags I own are Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton. Those two brands are of course very good in quality, but this thread is about contemporary, so... back on topic!

I have no issues with any of my Michael Kors, Kate Spade, or Dooney purchases. They all look brand new.

Because I have some older (from when she first started) Rebecca Minkoff bags, I thought that I would get a new one. I bought a mini Regan from TJMaxx and LOVE it. Wear it all the time. However, I could not bring myself to buy one from Bloomingdales. They all felt like plastic.

I have tried with Coach, but I haven't bought a new Coach bag from anywhere in five years. For one , the prices are too expensive. Secondly, I was treated poorly in a Coach store five years ago. Every time I think that I am ready to let it go, I can't seem to give them my hard earned money. I'd rather spend it elsewhere. Just goes to show that you can't treat customers like crap and expect them to spend money at your store.

I bought a fair few Kate Spade bags about 10 years ago, several of which are vintage items from the 90's and are absolute beauties! [emoji7] I don't have anything since the company was sold in 2006 and I can't seem to find a refill for my Wellesley agenda ... Pity! [emoji53]
Two of my friends have several Coach bags, bought from the Cheshire Oaks and Bicester Village outlets here in the UK. All the bags are stylish, well-made and a fraction of the price of my Mulberry bags!

According to D&B forum there are questions about quality(florentine and alto lines , for example) and dooney website service is absolutely horrible. I was looking for a sturdy purse to send to my friend and set high hopes on dooney. Very disappointed. Sadly, I won't recommend dooney to anybody right now.

I have a kate spade bag that I bought new for 250 dollars like 10 years ago. I wore it every single day until I discovered designer handbags like 2 years ago. And you know what? It still looks NEW. Plus it has internal organization. I have never had an issue with quality from Kate Spade, or from any contemporary brand, to be honest. On the other hand, my Goyard St. Louis tote had a pouchette whose stitching came undone within a week. My friend had this goyard luggage whose strap gave way within 6 months of buying it (and since it's luggage, it isn't used every day...). I still kind of love goyard, but definitely not for the quality....

Best: Kate Spade and Michael Kors (I have one of each). They still look great after two years of heavy use.

Worst: Rebecca Minkoff. One of the studs om my Regan satchel has been loose since I received it and after using it lightly for two summers I'm starting to see threads come loose on the seams (to where I had to trim the loose thread). Also the leather is way sub par compared to my KS Phoebe and MK saffiano Hamilton. Will NEVER waste money on RM again. The leather used on the Regan satchel/crossbody (at least) is complete garbage.

I'm also a Dooney lover. Have an Elisa handbag from them (Verona Bionda style) and the quality is amazing. The pebbled leather feels thick and sturdy and the vachetta trim is very soft yet structured. I've been considering a Mulberry purchase, but I think my next bag may just be another Dooney!

Kate Spade and MK are hit and miss for me.

Recently bought a Vera Bradley leather wallet and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it is. I really like their fabric cosmetic pouches because they're washable, but this wallet purchase was my first foray into their newer leather line. The pebbled leather is very soft and the zippers are YKK brass. I went with VB over D&B out of curiosity and because I liked the internal layout better than what D&B wallets offered.

I have two Rebecca Minkoff bags. One is a MAC from 2012 or so. This one held up really well, no wear I can find. I have a bucket bag, in the same shade and similar leather. This one has wear and is fading. It wasn't dyed nicely.

I have a couple of Kate Spade bags. My scout cross body is indestructible. Unfortunately my awesome cobalt blue quilted bag looks like crap. Peeling handles, the dye has worn off on the corners and in the middle. The zipper pull has peeled apart. My sister had another bag - I don't recall the name - and the black dye stained her clothing. :(

I have saffiano satchel that was super cheap from KS I use for the rain. The saffiano is not as nice as the first gen MK Selma I have. That bag has held up nicely. I found MK inconsistent. I don't trust certain closures as I tried out several bags over several years and the clasp didn't stay shut. I sold the first as it was too late I return. I tried a few years later and they had similar failures.

I have a MK collection bag - Miranda - it is really nice though no longer practical for me.

I have a Fossil bag - this has held up nicely. But leather quality is hit or miss.

I have lots of Coach bags and almost all have help up really well. My Kristin had peeling glazing on the handles after a couple of years. The Sophia looks decent but the handles have darkened on my light grey bag. This week I am revisiting my all time fave coach bag - the small urbane. This one almost has zero wear, other than some bending of the shoulder strap. My market tote looks new as well. I haven't had many issues with my coach bags at all, but they have minimal hardware and are made of leather. My nomad hobo has a small scratch (my fault) and a few creases (my fault).

Generally I am pretty lazy about my bags. So I should see problems,

A premium bag that sucked? Reed Krakoff. I got one at an outlet, but the strap ended up coming apart and I had to get an ugly repair as it was after the brand had folded. My coach bags held up much much better.

I have a Lo and sons bag. Very nice for the price. Much nicer than the Kate spades I have. And lots of pockets.

Another winner? Eleven thirty. I picked up a bag in a hipsterboutique. It is made in Canada. Super nice leather and I get loads of compliments. My only complaint is the straps are hard to adjust with the sturdy thick leather straps. This is one of my fave bags. And there is no branding so it is just an under the radar leather bag. My small crossbody bag holds a ton - small wallet, water bottle, scarf or sweater, phone charger, lotion, lipstick. And there is a little room to spare. With a smaller scarf full size headphones too.

My personal experience:
Good:
Kate Spade - wallet from their "surprise sale", no issue; a large purse that was also from surprise sale, I rarely use it so can't speak of that
Michael Kors - a dome satchel from Macy's, no issue so far
OK:
Rebecca Minkoff - a pouch from barneys warehouse, held up well, however the color went off when I tried to use a leather cleaner, so maybe the dye wasn't quite good; a saffiano key pouch, held up well even after completed soaked in water
Bad:
Coach - a wallet from outlet store, lost its snap closure button in 2 month
Tory Burch - a crossbody bag from their website, used a couple of times and the hardware tarnished

We're all so impacted by our experience on one or two bags from a brand - but that doesn't always speak to overall quality. And I know I don't have time to lurk all the forums to try to get an overall read on people's experiences.

So, I wonder - is there any independent evaluation / evaluator of handbag quality?

These are all of course my own personal experiences, which is not necessarily representative for all, of course.

Rebecca Minkoff: I bought several Nikkis back when they were all the rage. They were wonderful bags - thick, quality leather, well constructed, etc. i have donated all but two simply for colour/not enough use but even after much use on all they looked great. I don't wear hobo styles much anymore but I cannot part with my last two Nikkis (a Wine and a Cloud Grey) as they are just so lovely. I have not been attracted to any of her newer stuff. The items I have handled have just not felt like the RM I remember. But I have not owned any of the newer stuff so cannot speak to it really. For me it is just a style thing. No direct experience with CS.

Kate Spade: I have several bags and SLGs, both FP and MFF. I won't ever buy KS at full price but I have had great experiences with all my KS items. I use a saffiano KS wallet daily (a MFF Newbury Lane Neda) and it is probably my favourite wallet ever. Looks great. I have a saffiano Stacy wallet for travel and I am just as happy with it. I put my KS bags through a lot - they aren't bags I tend to shelter from the rain or elements or abuses of travel and they still look great. I don't go for any of her really cutesy whimsical items but I must admit I totally admire the seahorse clutch a friend of mine has. Not only is is beautifully made, it speaks to this scuba diver, even if I could not take it underwater with me! I have had great experience with CS.

Michael by Michael Kors: this brand gets a lot of negativity on here but I am very happy with the two bags I have. Both pebbled leather Mercer Medium Duffels (speedy/boston bag style). They are a good lighter weight, have lots of internal organization, and I think are nice and understated (they have his name but they blend in with the bag style/colour, and a lock hangtag which is easy to remove). I use these mostly as summer bags/errand bags, but they can easily transition to work or date night as well. I would never pay full price for MMK but I am happy for price I paid. It seems every blogger on youtube has a Selma or two, but oddly I rarely see MMK where I live. CS was...eh. It is much better to contact them via facebook than to call them.

Coach: As Coach was so everywhere when I was a teenager (in the 90s) I was very uninterested in the brand for...decades. The leather styles I did see did not speak to me. I see a lot of their MFF signature items in the Winners here, or carried on arms. But...I was totally won over by their 1941 line. Stuart Vevers is doing amazing things over there, and not just with bags. I now have 7 bags (all from the 1941 line). I want more. I am in looove with the Rogues and Rogue satchels, but the entire line is beautiful. Great thick, chewy leather, wonderful stitching, great attention to not just form but function (another plug for the Rogues!), suede & leather linings even in bags under $1,000, unobtrusive branding (just the horse & coach emblem on a removeable hangtag). I am a total convert to Coach now and can imagine carrying the Coach bags I have now for the rest of my life. I only have experience with their online CS but so far it has been amazing!

Hm..
I must just be very gentle; I can't think of many outright quality issues I've had OTHER than the general decline contemporary well-known brands are inflicting on us.
My MK are all the softer, 'higher end' (for Michael Kors) leathers, but nothing other than normal corner wear...
Same with my Kate Spades, they hold up surprisingly well externally considering how lightweight they are (I'm old school and associate light with cheap) though the linings are often cheap-looking to me.
My bags from a nobody company called Boden, out of England, are very comparable to KS quality wise.
I like my Marc Jacobs and my one MBMJ. They're just kinda there.

Coach..? I take good care of my stuff. My Carly is not frayed anywhere. I LOVE my pieces made in NYC. I oughta check out their throwback line but I hadn't needed to cause the actual originals are SO AWESOME.
I confess a love of Fossil. All their stuff EXCEPT the jewelry is very well made for the cost. Jewelry, keep clear. I will say, Fossil is hot & cold.New season? I either want every single bag in every color and all the bag charms and all the keychains... or I can't flee the store fast enough. Just..avoid the jewelry. The outer plating is gonna be gone in a month.

Dooney!! Yeah, they can't win on styling. For a long time they caught mad crap because everything was too young, I'm a grown woman not a middle schooler, etc, and now I hear a lot of everything is too old, I'm a young woman not a retiree or a lawyer, etc.
They hold their heads high with the big dogs as far as how well the bag is constructed and out of what quality components. Some people got scared off because they read three posts about bad ones..?
Spend some time in the LV threads. THeRE shalt thou hearest many tales of woeful quality, of canvas one hath paid four digits for that hath cracked before the sixmonth is out.
Everyone turns out some stinkers. Frankly if I never read anything but slobbering praise, I suspect shenanigans. Paid fawners. It's the gist that matters.
I have only had two Dooneys whose poor performance I could lay at Dooney's door. Actually, one is partly my fault; I stored it in a garage and the coating separated from the canvas. Yeah, maybe they should plan for that. I mean, cars get hot. People leave purses in cars. Invent coated canvas that withstands heat. BUT it's unrealistic to expect it withstand for three years straight , I guess!

Mostly I lament the general decline in contemporary quality. Everyone can see Rebecca Minkoff isn't the same now. Coach?? Please. Pretty soon it's going to be either Factory quality for a hundred bucks or slightly above average for nine hundred.
Everyone is cheaping out wherever they can get away with it and no sir, I don't like it.
