So this idea just popped into my head but I'm sure someone else has probably come up with it before me. I thought that maybe I will buy bag/s to mark different milestones in my life.

"Milestones" could include things such as graduating university, getting engaged/married, getting a promotion, having a baby, finalising a divorce, overcoming something difficult you were going through, etc. etc.

Is there anyone around here who does this. If so which bag did you get for each milestone?

I am considering getting a bag to celebrate the fact that I've finally decided what I want to study at university/will be starting university very soon. I am going to buy it anyway but I just thought it would be fun to get it around the time that I start university as a reminder of what it took me to get to the point where I am finally starting a degree.

Yes! My HG, Hermès Box Kelly, was purchased after I completed a difficult 'family project'. I promised myself that I'd graduate uni, buy a house, travel, and fulfill the family situation, amongst other things, and only then spend that amount on my dream bag. So there were a lot of milestones behind that purchase! A few months later a work project I had been working on for 4 years came good, I popped back into H and saw a rare bird in the form of a Jigè with lizard trim, and a day later after I signed the contract I bought it.

Major congrats on starting uni! Had the best time, and what better way than go into it beautifully accessorised! (I recently unearthed one of my first designer bag purchases- a pre-Nightingale Givenchy shoulder tote - I bought during and used throughout uni and aside from how great the design is, I love what it reminds me of).

Which one are you thinking of getting?

I buy something more lasting to mark milestones, such as jewelry. I bought a gold band for my first "A" in college -. I wear it daily, and every time I look at it I feel a renewed sense of confidence in myself. :D I know a handbag wouldn't have lasted this long ...

It is wonderful to read your story :smile1:

Nothing overly spectacular, I was thinking of getting a Rebecca Minkoff MAB Mini in black. It would be my first time spending over $300 on a bag. $300 is a lot of money for me :p

Jewellery is another way to go. I think I'll do both. :D

Me too. I prefer jewellery as milestone markers - I suppose jewellery is more easily personalised through engraving and choice of stone/design? That said, I've had others buy me bags as birthday/anniversary presents so its not uncommon.

I totally do this. I do software design projects and after each one's done I buy myself a moderately nice bag for each depending on the size of the project. I haven't ever bought any hugely expensive designers, mostly my faves like Hayden-Harnett, Cole Haan, Rebecca Minkoff, etc. But I just finished a really big project and I'm actually thinking about kicking it up an notch and getting my first LV or maybe BV... squee!

For my First Real Job After graduation I bought myself a LV Artsy ❤❤❤❤❤for my masters
Degree brought myself the alma ..... Sometimes unjust have to reward yourself 😄

When dd was born i bought a lv mono noe which i have been admiring since i was about 10 years old. So the bag's date code is same year as dd's "date code" :p :smile1: The "best" part was when dd was about 1 year old i was carrying her and the noe (barely used) and dd bite the bag's handle when both me and dh weren't paying attention (because i was inside lv lol). So yes looking at the bag brings back fond memories

Did both jewelry and handbags.

Omega to celebrate high school graduation.
Coach handbag to celebrate first real job.
DBF bought me a Tiffany necklace for our first Christmas.
Pearls for graduating college.
Longchamp bags for when I started working.
Prada to mark my promotion at work.

Will buy something from London to mark my first trip to England. XD

It's fun to have such a milestone/memory tied to items. I feel like I cherish these items more over ones I bought while just shopping.

What are you looking into getting for your milestone?

Lovely! That Givenchy was less than $300 (ten years ago, as I said pre-Nightingale but still the days where it was Made in France).

I forgot to add my favourite pieces of jewelry have been milestones as well. Watches, earrings, etc.

If you love the bag and will use it, go for it! Post a picture when you do! And the jewelry. I like indiaink's idea of the gold band.... Have fun choosing

I know tomorrow I plan on going to KOP to hopefully buy an epi alma bb that I've been lusting after for a while. I've been waiting till I got an internal job transfer that I've been waiting for, and I finally got the news yesterday. I was going to buy the purse to celebrate the occasion. In the past, I've also bought bags for christmas and birthdays.

Congratulations on going to Uni, that's HUGE and I think a bag is a very good practical choice for the occasion.

At the prices bags are, they can cost the same as jewellery

I was bought an Aquascutum reversible raincoat by my parents for passing my GCEs (I don't know what the equivalent is in the US, perhaps high-school diploma) - total bribe. At the time I could never have afforded a coat like that even working every day after school and on the weekend (which I did).

Usually, I go out with friends/family and celebrate these things with a meal, so the memory is the 'thing' but yes, sometimes something for myself that befits the occasion. I think it's a great idea

More to motivate me to finish my PdD rather than celebrate the milestone the fact, I bought a gold ID bracelet when I transferred from MPhil to PhD. I was only allowed to engrave once I'd finished and finally passed. I also forbade myself to wear it until it was engraved. I hate unfinished business, and having it around unwritten and unusable was a reminder I'd better get writing myself. Now it says Dr.PT :yahoo:
