Bags that are "you" and bags that are NOT "you"

With a lot, and I mean a lot of trial and error I know the following.

Me:
LV Mono, DE and epi/pebbled leather, YSL, Fendi Zucca (although I haven’t had much luck with their bags), MCM backpacks.
I love in your face classic logos, bumbags and extra straps with pops of color.
I like my bags with easy access, high quality but low maintenance and multi strap/styling options.
Some favorites are the Givenchy Pandora, YSL Niki, LV Noe BB and Lockme II BB and Gucci GG Supreme Belt Bag.

Not me:
Chanel, Hermes, recent limited edition LV, Celine, (surprisingly) Balenciaga mini backpacks, super structured, fussy openings, exotics.

I recently realised that I am not a Louis Vuitton girl. I don't appreciate its aesthetics. I purchased a preloved Speedy B, and I am even thinking already of reselling it, eventhough I have not used it.

I am also not a Bottega Venetta and Hermes girl.

I am very much a Balenciaga and Givenchy girl.

Also Saint Laurent! Can’t believe I forgot to include it.

So those are my trifecta - Balenciaga, Saint Laurent and Givenchy.

Definitely a bucket bag/tote girl. Satchels if they don't have a flap. NOT a flap bag girl. NOT a backpack girl.

I want to be a Balenciaga girl, but can't yet afford that. Specifically the Balenciaga City bag. I have a couple Coach bags, but not generally a Coach girl. Have a couple Marc Jacobs bags I love. I'm a Michael Kors girl.

It’s taken me a long time to figure out what I like/my style and to stop buying bags just b/c I LOVED the color.

I:love: older LV. Newer styles are kinda “meh”. I keep trying to love Gucci, but I’ve only found one that made my heart “pitter patter” but have to keep the heart on the back hidden (cuz ). I love most of YSL bags, very classy but I only have 1(realizing I need to correct this soon:graucho:) I’m not into the weave of BV bags but, to be fair, I’ve not seen one in person.

Dior is ok (I only like the Diorama) and I  over the Bal City Metallic Edge, but the short shoulder strap is a deal breaker (being on the taller side). It’s taken me a good few years to like Chanel, but only the chevron versions. I like some Chloe, and find Celine :sleepy:). I’ve never been a fan of MCM (which is odd as I like logo bags). And, while I realize Hermes is the creme de la creme, I cannot justify the cost:eek::whut:, nor am I excited about any of their styles (plz don’t hate me :flowers:).

I MUST, have a shoulder strap on my bags. Hand held/crook carry only just don’t work for me. I carry the kitchen sink so I need room. My collection is smaller and I’m working on building a functional collection: tote for travel, crossbody for travel/security, evening bag, etc... Once I have all of those slots filled, I can expand the group to include more “fun” bags.

I used to tell people if you looked up my name in the dictionary, it would just say - oxymoron.
Trying to answer this just proves my theory

-I love a bag that is one big hole, but I love having compartments in my Céline Trio and basically use it as my “SLGs” in my larger bags.
-I love structure very much, but my Balenciaga City bag is one of my favorites.
-I love the soft SOFT leathers, but I had to have a Dolce & Gabana Sicily.
-I love being able to throw a bag over my shoulder, but I gravitate toward hand helds.
-I love fun colors, but I wear many neutral bags. (Because my clothes are also fun colors.)
-I love a purse with a secure closure that has an outer pocket for my phone, but I love an open tote or bag which allows me to leave the zipper open, just to throw my phone into.

NOT me
A red crossbody with lots of compartments made out of slouchy rough leather. #MyNightmare

ETA Removable shoulder straps are the dream.

@MaseratiMomma :lol: #MyNightmare
That was great. I can't imagine how dreadful my nightmare bag would be.

Me:
can be worn crossbody
Black
Fits a small water bottle and various gadgets
Feels lux

Not me:
Backpacks (I can’t stand having to take it off and swing it around all the time to get things out
Heavy
Contemporary
Fussy opening
Bulky to the point where people bump into it

What a fun thread!

Me:
- LV bags and SLGs. In my opinion, LV offers the most practical designs. Though I am sad about the declining quality.
- LV monogram paired with Vachetta. Love the brand new vachetta and honey comb color vachetta
- Bags with a nice zipper closure on top, boston bags, camera bags.
- A cross body camera bag which holds lot more than it seems to is the ultimate me bag.
- Crossbody bags.
- Bags that can be worn more than one way. Bags that can be comfortably carried on my arm crook.
- Bottega Veneta aesthetics when it had the old director.
- Lamb skin, soft smooshy bags.
- Suede/Leather interior. Love a luxurious interior. Although I do not like flap design, I enjoy seeing a double flap on the interior of bags, like compartmentalized bags.
- Fun material on bags - nylon, velvet, suede, wool, tweed.
- Black bags, Neutral or pastel colors.
- Mini bags, clutches, mini shoulder pouches.
- Metallics.

Not me:
- About 85 percent of flap bags (there are a few I like selectively)
- Handbags that are nicer but has a very tote like design
- Eg: Antigona, celine luggage, Lady dior (except certain mini ones). - basically do not dig that serious work bag look, i like fun weekend bags.
- Chloe bags.
-YSL bags.
- Most of the dior aesthetics. I really am trying to get something from Dior but i do not like 95 percent of their design.
- Box leather. Super structured bags.
- Dark serious colors which aren't black. Example: Navy, Burgundy etc. Seem to not go with my skin tone, and are not fun enough to me.
- Bright colors on handbags. I admire them from far only.
- Pebbled leather. Cannot stand emperiente LV leather.
- Too much of art work. (Again, cannot see myself committing to it, although i admire them from far)

Not for me : Givenchy, ysl, LV, Dior, Prada, Chloe, Miu Miu, Celine, Balenciaga, Louboutin, alaia, Goyard, Moynat, Valentino, faure le page, etc

easier to list what I like : Hermes, new Bottega and Delvaux

Grey list is Fendi and Chanel. I absolutely love the bags I have, one from each brand, but I don’t want anymore.

Absolutely no contemporary Brands but I do have a few no brand bags that I love and will keep forever. To me new BV seems like a contemporary brand to me (it’s aesthetics not price)

I am NOT:
  • LV - not a single one I like
  • do not like quilted so Dior and Chanel are out
  • do not like woven anything but straw, so BV bags are out (but BV SLGs - I am crazy for them, woven in small size or lanyard - LOVE)
  • Hermes bag (same with SLGs, all my SLGs are BV and Hermes) - but if I could find a large barenia beaten up looking like from old adventure movies (saw one long time ago), that one would be my favourite bag
  • do not like saffiano or hermes epsom or courchevel leather

I do like:
  • Bal (many styles , many of which are not so common)
  • Fendi (hit and miss with them but when it is a hit, it really is)
  • Mulberry oak darwin leather Bayswater (that is who I am, that one Mulberry, for student papers)
  • YSL from Tom Ford and Pilati era (selected styles, a lot of Muse II in various colours and leathers)
  • Miu Miu oldies when they were good, no glitter and crystals please
  • one orange Goyard St Louis tote and red tablet case
  • Longchamp le Pliage for no fuss in rainy days
  • Vivienne Westwood asymmetric crazy bags, again for no fuss in rain and slush

ooo this is a fun thread!

Me to a 'T'
- Classic LV (speedy, neverfull, favorite, pochette metis etc)
- Balanciaga City
- Givenchy (Cross3, Antigona)
- Loewe Puzzle
- Saint Laurent
- Chloe
- Celine
- Mulberry

Would like to be me
- Dior

Won't be caught dead in
- Chanel
- BV
- Goyard
- MiuMiu
- D&G

As I review this list, I'm realizing that with the exception of LV, I gravitate towards brands that are understated, minimal branding, with amazing craftsmanship with a steady following (e.g., don't have insanely trendy, 'hypebeast' with maybe the exception of Chloe). If I ever get anything from Chanel it'll definitely be one of those 'youtube/Insta made me do it' scenarios.

Instead of going into particular brands I’m going into style Of bags.

first big Totes are not for me, I just feel them to big for my height

what is me.
bags That I know I can dress them up or down. I love a bag that I can wear with a nice dress for A day time event or with Jeans.

colors: I’m scared of flashy colors so I always look for neutrals or the classic black And I love chains as a strap.
another big yes are crossbody bags.

This thread has been super fun to read!

I think we all have a “look” but sometimes a particular bag will surprise you and that’s part of the fun of it.

This! Couldn’t agree more.

I love a structured but semi-soft satchel for daily use with top handles

This probably describes my ideal bag also.

Brands that are ‘me’:
  • Celine
  • Fendi (not the crazier ones tho)
  • old Proenza Schouler
  • new Bottega Veneta
  • Polene
Brands that are not me:
  • LV
  • Gucci
  • Hermes
  • Saint Laurent
  • Chloe
  • Balenciaga

I own and am obsessed with Chanel, although the 50s/vintage-fabulous style technically isn’t ‘me.’ But I love a lot of their bags, so there it is.

What I’ve learned at this point is that I love:
  • Bags with both a top handle and a long strap so I can carry them two ways
  • Clean and classic lines; semi-tailored, but still with something fun or different to offer
  • Luxurious leather. Saffiano is mostly a no go.
What I hate:
  • Big, open totes
  • Bags where the long strap attaches in a strange spot
  • Boston-style bags like the Speedy
  • Shoulder bags where the strap is only long enough for the bag to hug you under the armpit and it makes your arm stick out.

I think you'll like Aspinal of London's styles
What I’ve learned at this point is that I love:
  • Bags with both a top handle and a long strap so I can carry them two ways

I love the following styles:
  • Slouchy hobos, totes, or shoulder bags in a smooshy leather and neutral colour (exceptions are dark green and purple)
  • Bags with top handle and crossbody strap
  • Vintage styles with a modern twist
  • Bohemian styles
The following is not for me:
  • Bags with zipper tails exposed (exceptions: Balenciaga bags)
  • Saffiano leather
  • Bags where the crossbody strap can only be attached to the ring where the handles are attached, rather than having separate crossbody rings
  • Heavy bags
  • Stiff, rigid bucket bags where it can't close all the way
Bags that I like:
  • Balenciaga City
  • Most of The Row bags
  • Bottega Veneta bags from Tomas Maier's era
  • Most of Aspinal of London bags
  • Most of Polene bags
  • Chloe Faye and Paraty
  • Proenza Schouler PS1
  • Mulberry Alexa
