Automatic or Battery movement?

I prefer automatics however good maintenance on an automatic is going to cost more than that of replacing the battery of quartz. Of course the range of service prices depends on who's servicing it (i.e. Cartier, Rolex etc); nonetheless it will always cost more to service a Cartier automatic than a Cartier quartz - at least that has been my experience.

Just me 2 cents worth,

I have a Rolex, which is automatic, and a Cartier, which runs on a battery. Both have their advantages. If you don't wear the automatic for a couple of days, it stops and you have to reset it, but on the other hand, you don't have to keep getting new batteries for it either. So I like both, and actually, I'm glad I've got both.

A fabulous and balanced view for both sides of the original question, really does highlight the pros and cons of either, and that really there is no right or wrong choice,it really is a matter of personal needs and tastes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've always had battery watches and a very nice watch repair guy at the jewelry department in my nearby Fred Meyer so honestly it's been incredibly convenient for me to give him my battery business and he always cleans my watches no charge!

BUT...this year I got my first Michele which is auto winding...I wear it almost every day and I could get royally spoiled, LOL!!

I'm a watch fan and I fell in love with watches since High School.

My general rule of thumb is IF I want a keeper, an expensive classic watch that I can hand it down to my kids, then I'd want an automatic. It's much more reliable than a quartz. I don't trust a quartz because a battery is a battery (IT DOES LEAK IF YOU KEEP IT INSIDE THE WATCH AFTER IT IS OUT OF JUICE). It's little wonder 90% of luxury watch brands have most (if not all) of their products to be automatic. It's harder to make automatic watches for smaller frames, that's why most women's watches are quartz. Not because it's an option, but it is (I believe) impossible to make it automatic.

Ok,

That said, I have a few quartz watches for everyday use or just for variety. I love Gucci watches and we all know Gucci is mid-range. A battery here and there every so many years and you're set. if you get tired of one Gucci, buy another one or buy another Mid-range watch like CK, Coach, or Mont Blanc. Quartz are pretty much the only option for these mid range watches cause they know the watch is "fashionable" and will pretty much be used for 5 or so years.

There's really no difference between quartz and automatic since they both do the simple task of telling time. duh!
But in the long run, you'll have to decide if the watch is worth its weight with your hard earned money and just how long you plan on having it. There's a reason for people who buy watches studded with diamonds/jewels or watches covered in gold/platinum....it's because they want it handed down to their kids... but if you're gonna wear it just to tell time, a very pretty quartz of any brand will do just excellentlyl.

Do you consider Gucci as same range as CK, Coach????? The price is totally different :p

Automatic. I have a battery operated Cartier which I never wear because I find it so boring looking (no offense to other Cartier owners). I've been wearing my J12 every day since I got it. I love how I never have to worry about changing the battery, and since I use it everyday I don't have to worry about having to reset it if it goes "idle".

It's a matter of personal preference. If you switch between watches a lot, it would probably be smarter to get the battery movement. If you plan on only using one watch for a while, get the automatic.
