AH! Thank you, PERI......

Totally in agreement with you on this one. How much is the seller asking for this bag?

S'Mom, it is this auction. I looked at Picasa shots, agree about the handle cracks, yes it can be replaced as Perigord says. Again, get better pictures of whole bag. It is authentic, and I think that if rest of bag is OK, it would be worth saving at this price just to get your hands on vintage box.

Hi,

Could you please help me with authenticating this bag? The seller does not seem to much history on eBay or other items listed for sale

Thank you

Bababebi, unless you are a serious collector and want a very vintage bag in your collection, I would pass on this bag. I don't think it is for a person starting out with Hermes. I would not want to start out with a bag that need handle replacement. You would be putting too much money into an old bag IMO. You will always have an old bag with a new handle.

Bababebi, Perigold and S'mom
I'm considering the chocolate brown leather one. I have asked the seller for more pics showing the bag, handle and corners. Bid is starting at USD 1,896. It looks like if I chose to get it, I would need to send it to spa and have handle replaced or repaired.
I'm also confused with the description. Title mentions Box which I thought was Box Calf leather but the detailed descriptions mentions Barenia. Is Box and Barenia different?
Thank you so much for your help!

The seller doesn't know what she is talking about. It is NOT barenia. It is box leather. Please look at my comment above. I see no reason to buy this bag.

In addition, if you replaced the handle, it could very well stick out from the rest of the bag as looking very new. I have an idea that matching this brown might be a lot harder than matching a black.

Good point, had not thought of that, sounds like someone with a bad face lift, Old bag with new handle, Ha ha!

Original Poster, Gracekelly has an excellent point of view, this bag is not for a new collector, maybe only for someone who wants a Mary-Kate Olsen type bag, cracks and all.

gracekelly and Bababebi Good point about condition of the bag. It would be like getting an vintage car but needing to replace/repair the engine. Bit of a challenge for a newbie.

Yes, I contacted the seller. It appears that he/she does not have any idea about difference between box calf and barenia.

I am not terribly familiar with 40-year-old stamps, but the name stamp is not consistent with barenia. The images are not great, but the leather has a somewhat dull look. This might be consistent with stored oxiduzed barenia...but a true used barenia would have a glossier patina. The stamp is consistent with box, but I do not know what the dull-leather look in some of the images means.

I still have many questions about this bag and the condition that are not answered by the images. I suspect that if you keep looking, you will find a better vintage specimen.

You are right. There are a few questions that need to be answered about this bag. Leather does look as glossy as other pics with box leather. Perhaps it is dry.

On a separate note, I found another vintage specimen in better condition. Will post it shortly.
