Thank you, Hyacinth. I think I may have a couple of fakes already (and I'm new to vintage Coach). Could you check this Willis? The leather feels different than any of my other bags and the suede inside is "hairy". The dash is missing from the code.

Another I have concerns about is this Stewardess. The hardware is brass everywhere but the feet, which are silver. There is a faint bullseye stamp near the code. Does this mean it was made for the outlet?

And lastly, just to make sure, this bag (would appreciate an I.D.- it measures approx 11" wide x 6.5" tall x 3" deep). The interior was very dirty, so I dunked this one. The creed is very very faint- I don't know whether that was caused by overzealous washing? I didn't notice it being so faint before the dunk.

The dash isn't "missing". Dash placement can be different from different plants or different years. There's no "rule" that says every Coach serial number has to have a dash in exactly the same place. If you read that nonsense somewhere, ignore it and all other "rules" from the same source. And if you haven't already read the Salearea Guides posted at Ebay, do it now.
http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/salearea_W0QQcpnameZmembersQQprZsaleareaQQuqtZg

One of the most important statements to remember from the Salearea Guides is this - "The most consistent thing about Coach is their inconsistency."

There are also no rules about leather, other than leather showing stretch marks and "elephant skin" in unstressed areas of the leather usually mean damage during processing and a fake bag. Just because the suede backing in one is shaggy and another one isn't doesn't mean one is fake.

All those details can AND DO change during production and will often show big differences between plants and sometimes even between different months in the same plant.Coach has also changed creed details in the middle of a month's production. Stop trying to use them for authentication, IT DOESN'T WORK and most of those differences don't mean squat. The most UNchanging details on bags are creeds and serial numbers and there are even differences there - every single plant uses a different stamp with different details and characteristics, and Coach constantly changes details, wording, and the stamps themselves. Not only do you have to compare "apples to apples" but also apples all made in the same plant, month and year and with the same style number - and even then there can be differences. Not to mention the fact that Coach plant personnel sometimes DID make mistakes.

Don't believe me? Do a simple experiment. Make a photo folder on your computer and for one month save a photo of every single creed and serial number combo you come across on Ebay or any other site, and try to save at least one hundred from different time periods and styles. Then at the end of the month, go through them and see how many are identical and how many even from similar styles are different, especially the fonts, dashes, and size and positions of the underlines in the "No" in the serial numbers.

And BTW, there's nothing wrong with the bag in the photo.

It's hard to tell what the third digit in the serial is supposed to be. If it's a "C", it's genuine.

The feet may have been replaced or the brass plating might have worn off. And yes, that's an outlet stamp and the bag looks genuine.

The seller or previous owner may have removed the hardware to clean and polish the brass. I don't see any problems.

Remember, pictures of the BACK of the turnlock especially of the back of the oval plate where the 4 pointed tabs grip the plate are just as important as the front.

Great-- Thank you Hyacinth.

BTW, I just added another comment to that post, check the italics.

Hyacinth, thank you for your time and expertise. I'm new to this, and even after reading your guides and with them in front of me, there are so many factors I don't feel confident in my own appraisal of a bag, especially if there is anything "different" about it.
