I need help authenticating this purse.

Authentic. Not worth more than $20.

Welcome BigFatBagLady

We ask that inexperienced posters NOT get involved in authenticating. And we suggest that posters asking for opinions concentrate on the ones from experienced authenticators. When there are sellers' reputations and considerable amounts of money at stake, we want to be sure our opinions are well-founded.

We also do NOT discuss pricing or values of items under discussion.

PLEASE READ THE FORUM AND POSTING RULES IN POST NUMBER ONE AND FOLLOW THEM, especially regarding discussing prices and value. That should be done before posting in any forum.

Thank you.

I have been seeing more and more fake classic leather bags. These two were part of a big lot of purses I bought on eBay. The seller already refunded my $ but I wanted to post them here for people who may think they don't have to worry about the classic leather bags. Here is a City and a Willis, both fake :(
The Willis's creed is pretty disgusting. The City is a pretty good fake, but the serial number is a strange, crooked font, the word 'scratches' is spelled 'scatches', and the lining on the back pocket is a different color leather.

Thanks so much.

Edited to add...my only concern was the center seam on the bottom of the bag...compared to the pic of the only other one listed...link below. This link is only to the bottom seam.

Thanks...both seem alike except this one picture. Both have great feedback and i'm sure they're both authentic. Just wanted to make sure with the center seam pics.

I can't quite read the full serial number but it's pretty easy to figure out what it is - 012-3445 has been on my Fake serial Numbers list for a long time:

The shape of the bag isn't quite right either, and the leather just doesn't look right. The sides stick out too much and the different color of the piping is another red flag.

0974-534 is also on the List. The creed stamping is a nasty uneven mess, and the little "pillow" under the leather at the top of the turnlock flap is the wrong size. I'll bet the side edges of the inside zipper pocket aren't attached to the sides of the bag either.

Thank you for telling people what I've been saying for years - and that there's more to figuring out if an older Coach is fake that "It looks ok and the leather feels right". Serial numbers and creed stamps are the key most of the time, if someone doesn't pay attention to those 2 items they're in for a few disappointments. And that older Coaches WERE faked - a LOT.

I was naive before and seeing as these two were in a big lot with no creed photos I took a chance... now that I've seen it firsthand I'm not going to buy any more lots. The seller didn't argue with me, but I don't EVER want to have that queasy feeling again, like how I felt when I saw that awful bubbly creed. Thanks for all your help, Hyacinth.

I'm not sure what about the seam worries you.

If you just mean the fabric and pattern placement, don't EVER expect the pattern placement on the bottom of a Coach style to be identical to all the others in that style.

Wow....thank you very much!!!!!

most of the so-called guides you find both at ebay and on other places on the net are pretty much useless, especially if they claim to show you how to tell if a bag is real. There's no such shortcut - anything a legitimate name-brand manufacturer can make, a counterfeiter can copy, sometimes very accurately. The only thing that works is to have an expert authenticate the coach item (even including things like keychains, which are highly faked) before you buy.

Any time any "authenticity guide" claims something like having zippers stamped ykk proves a coach is real, ignore that and any other information in that guide. If it were that easy to add something that "proves" a coach is genuine, the crooks would have figured it out long ago. Most fakes also have zippers stamped ykk.

There's a very good series of guides that help buyers spot some obvious signs of fakes though, although as you figured out they don't tell all the ways we spot them or the counterfeiters would have a field day. They're published at ebay's guides section by trusted seller "salearea" and are (cough) very well-researched if i do say so myself. You can find all six here:
http://search.reviews.ebay.com/members/salearea_w0qqcpnamezmembersqqprzsaleareaqquqtzg

some of us have also collected some of the most commonly used fake serial numbers, and you'll find them both here at the answers to authenticity questions thread - they take up three posts, 549,550 and 551 so be sure to read or bookmark all three:

there's an authorized copy of it by another poster at ebay's guides pages, same basic information, by ebayer "daria48":
http://reviews.ebay.com/fake-serial-numbers-and-counterfeit-coach-bags_w0qqugidz10000000002744619

hope those help. If there are any coach bags, wallets, or keychains you're not sure of, just post photos here - front, back and at least one side showing the strap attachment and buckle hardware, and especialy a clear readable macro photo of the creed stamp or patch and the serial number from inside the bag. We just ask that yo not post photos of more than 6 items at once. Or you can set up a separate photobucket album and post photos there, pb will handle larger photos that this forum's software permits.

Thanks for the offer "ledobe", but Hyacinth is the one that keeps this thread going without losing her mind.

But, I'd love a great big glass of any kind of white wine. I'm not particular! I'm easy!

:D

Thanks, I have a VERY generous Bloody Mary in front of me right now, so I'm good, and there's white wine chilling in the fridge. Just keep 'em coming until the Trolls stop showing up.

And keep a can of this handy too, the little boogers seem to be everywhere. You swat one down and a dozen more show up.:

Hey ladies, the Seller ratings are 100% so I not so worried about it being authentic. I do want to make sure and get info about this bag as it will be my first vintage bag. Well, I hope its true vintage. Your time is extremely appreciated! I have looked at several of these bags and just realized there is no creed patch pic for this one. I usually just pass a bag up with out this.
I wanted to point out that seller ratings of 100% are no assurance that the listing is authentic. There are plenty of power sellers with feedback in the thousands that can't tell an authentic from a fake, or maybe don't care. See this listing of a very obvious fake: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coach-Handbag-/280915185953?pt=US_CSA_WH_Handbags&hash=item4167d99121
Top rated seller. You will notice that her only negative has to do with delivery times and not with the selling of fakes. Please don't base your decision to purchase on the seller ratings alone.
