Hello:

Can someone also authenticate this Coach tote bag? If known, what's the name of the style? Thanks again and much appreciation.

Hi Hyacinth,

Please see attached additional photos of this bag and let me know your thoughts. Thank you so much! I do find the coloring inside the bag to be a little weird (like red velvet cup cake), but I am not sure if that is me wanting a sprinkles or the bag.....

:)

Sorry, but it's fake.

Real Coach bags usually don't have rivets at the ends of the straps. The front flap and turnlock are both slightly the wrong shape to be a Casino Bag which is what it's trying to be. Those are the red flags I noticed when you first posted the photos. The new pic of the back of the turnlock confirmed that the part is fake and not made by Coach, and so do the metal rivets holding the underside of the top handle.

The pic of the creed confirms it, not only are the fonts and stamping wrong but the stitching is really uneven. The style number -4921 belongs ONLY to a bag from the Sonoma line and all of those are pebbled leather with striped fabric linings. This leather isn't pebbled, it's badly wrinkled - it looks like cellulite or elephant skin - and that's a sign of overstretching and overprocessing during the tanning and prep process. That kind of wrinkling all over the bag or in places where a bag shouldn't get a lot of folding or stretching is always a red flag. The 2-tone coloring would never be seen in a genuine bag either.

Hope you can get your money back.

Thanks! I've always felt like I should get a Patricia one of these days since that's my name, and I think I'm going to like that color. :)

It's a great neutral color and a great bag - I have two of them and love the style, the strap is extra-long and there's a lot of room inside especially at the bottom where it's needed the most. It's just a simple classic style that works with anything.

I checked mine, and my black and burgandy totes have straps almost exactly one inch, but the orange one has wider straps at 1 and 1/8 inch. The orange one also has a metal kisslock on the front, whereas the other two were leather covered. I'm wondering if the orange one is older? I'm just curious about them all. They are such a great style, so useable and beautiful, and the leather is just fabulous. Mahogany or similar would be gorgeous too

hmm...maybe we need to start a slim tote comparison thread, I'm getting curiouser and curiouser.

I seriously love mine, and I kind of purchased it more as a collectible that I might carry sometimes, but I bet I end up using it a lot!

Bags made in the original factory in NYC were beautiful, made by humans, and not exactly "precise" in every detail. I wasn't surprised to find that the straps on mine weren't consistent. I used calipers and got slightly different measurements each time I chose an area on the strap.

I have no proof - but the Cashin designed Skinny Tote (like the one in the photo below) does have the metal surrounding the side kisslock. And...of course when I say that, I'm sure someone will show an authentic Cashin "Skinny" with the leather covered metal.

The Skinny Tote I own (which is "revised" and authenticated) was made after Cashin left the company and it does have the leather covered metal.

I'm not sure anything about the many changes that Coach made in the 1970's is set in stone because they changed things so often.

I agree they are great bags!

:smile1:

Thank you for confirming that. It is definately a lesson learned! I will let the seller know and hope she will take responsibility for it. If not I guess I can always go through EBay or credit card company. Thanks so much for your amazing knowledge!

Hi Hyacinth,

Your pointers had me thinking defensively about a City bag in my procession. Please help take a look. My concerns are (1) the inside color to be a whole lot "blacker" (to the right) than a tote bag (left) made in similiar time period. (2) The bag has nice and thick leather, but the trim leather looks funny, and (3) the lines of creed box is not straight. DId I get a fake City bag here? Thanks!

I've seen other creed stamps with a wavy border, and so far they all seem genuine. I think the stamps were probably just getting ild or maybe had been modified and damaged along the way.

Don't be concerned about small color variations on the insides, different skins took colors differently and skins were processed by several different companies. I don't see any problems.

BTW, I found a photo of the actual Sonoma Satchel style 4921 that was mentioned in your other post - it may help convince the person who sold you the fake that the serial number really IS fake and so is the bag. The first photo is right from Coach's files:

WOW I love the "real" 4921! Wouldn't it be nice if that was the bag I got......
I wonder if H Bolide copied Coach or the other way around????

Thank you!

The first two look ok. It's almost impossible to authenticate the third one without a clearer picture of the creed and serial number.
