I would like to purchase this Coach bag on Craigslist but would first like to make sure it's really. I researched on eBay and Coach.com and didn't find it anywhere which was strange to me. They did not include a photo of the creed/serial number in the listing.

Do any of you recognize this bag?

Thank you Hyacinth and BB!
You're welcome.
Hello! First time poster here :)

Item: Madison Op Art Satchel
Listing number: no listing #, not on ebay.
Seller: private local seller
Link: Removed URL because sellers phone # was there.
Comments: I'm thinking about buying this from a local person on a craigslist type website. She has another listing for the bag that I'm currently carrying and it appears to be legit. I have seen this style in the Op Art print before, but not with the black/grey that this one appears to be. What do you guys think?? Thanks!

I apologize, the clickable pic link isn't working, but those are the correct links.
It seems to be okay but other opinions are welcome.

Comments: interesting creed. I've never seen one worded that way when the leather is reversed.

It woulld be pretty unusual for the fakers to come up with both a fake style and a new fake creed. They're usually not that smart, luckily. ;)

It's from a line called Berkeley that came out in 1996 and used reversed suede as the main part of the bag, and it's prefectly genuine. It was called a Berkeley Backpack.

So, I didn't win the auction of the bag I recently had authenticated, so onto the next!

The seller didn't have pictures of the creed, so I asked the seller for a better picture: http://i40.tinypic.com/v65hf4.jpg

DON'T BID, It'S FAKE

The serial number is often used in fakes and only belongs to a Soho Bag which is totally different and a lot bigger, and the plant code wasn't used for a US plant. Check the Fakes List, the number is in the second or third category.

Here's the first part of the list, the often-fake number is toward the end of post 550 under "OFTEN USED ON COUNTERFEITS ":

It's a very good thing that you asked for a creed pic.

Wow....I'm glad I came here to ask before bidding! I'll definitely compare serial numbers to that list as a first line of defense. Thank you so much Hyacinth!!

Thankyou so much Hyacinth! It simply "oozed" Authentic so I'm so glad it is! What an amazing Berkeley Backpack - thankyou for authenticating and for the ID and information!:smile1:
... And I'm very glad the fakers aren't too smart - seems in general they are pretty hurried and less than careful giving little attention to details.

Comments: I was all set to buy until I looked at Ebay's guide serial nos. j8Y are well made fakes. My other deal is that I own the 9075 and it has the "This is a Coach bag part of a limited edition .....made bonnie cashin 1970" verbiage, this one doesn't. Last, if the 8 is a real year, Coach has no record of this bag or the 9074 in their system, help! The serial number for the one I own is E1B-9074

The picture of the creed doesn't appear to be from the same bag as those pictures in the CL post. The CL posting looks like a black bag with light blue lining. The creed you've posted looks like brown leather patch with tan lining.

This bag is fake, right? This seller complained on the eBay seller central board that her buyer accused her of selling a fake but the bag looks pretty fake to me. I don't know much about Coach, though so I thought I'd ask you all to take a look:

Yes, it's fake and her buyer is correct.

dpl71287 sold a fake. (In the future, please refer to post #1 of the thread for the posting format. Seller IDs make it easy to find sellers who have listed fakes and it's also helpful in searches for listings or items.)

First, a general warning - read those Guides CAREFULLY. The one Guide I could find that mentioned that number said "J8Y- and J4D- prefixes have shown up on some well-copied fakes in both fabric and leather" and it was listed under the heading "The following numbers are OFTEN USED ON COUNTERFEITS but can also show up in genuine bags and need to be looked at very carefully:" There's a difference there. Also Coach doesn't have every style number in their system especially since they only went online in 1999. Coach's computer system can't be depended on for accurate information. Some bags with that prefix MAY be genuine.

However, this isn't one of the genuine ones. I don't have any record in my catalogs of when styles 9074 and 9075 were released but many Limited Edition bags never made it into the catalogs. 1998 sounds too early though especially if you have one dated 2001. A while back another one was discussed - the wording on the creed reads in full: "This is a Coach bag, part of a limited edition. Originally designed for Coach by Bonnie Cashin in 1970. Manufactured in the US of natural top grain cowhide, its superior craftsmanship and attention to detail reflect our commitment to enduring quality." That one had a serial number of J0B-9075, and the creed wording apparently matches the one you bought recently that DemRam authenticated, although the creed photo was hard to read the Cashin reference is still visible.

That leaves us with 2 genuine styles made in 2000 and 2001. The 1998 date in the one you questioned combined with the differences in the creed stamp definitely indicate fake. The serial number prefix is a red flag, the creed stamp difference is actual proof. The sloppy stitching on the one in the listing just adds more evidence.

Feel free to report.
