A few additional photos, since some of these were requested by a few of you.

I believe someone wanted to see the back of the turn lock:

Hi there-- I'm completely absorbed by this saga!!! The back of the turn lock photo that was requested would have been for the back of the receiving piece-- the one with the hole in the middle. All real Coach turn locks have a flat back plate in this spot while many fakes have back plates with dimples where each of the prongs folds over.

Could someone please authenticate this bag for me? From my local thrift and in my possession.

I believe this view was one that someone wanted:

It's really obvious looking at this that the stitching is off. The two lines of stitching are 12mm apart on the left-hand side of the bag but only 7mm apart on the right-hand side.

More bad stitching:

And yet more bad stitching:

By "back of the turnlock" we mean the part that's on the front flap but on the back of it, where the front plate's prongs go through the leather and fasten to the piece that the prongs wrap around.

That stitching in the 5th photo really looks rough. If it had been used I might have thought it was a repair by someone who wasn't a professional leatherworker, but the listing says it's NWOT so it can't have been re-sewn.

I also have a question about another bag, the Large Saddle Pouch that I had authenticated a week or two ago. I'm wondering if this bag was made in gray or if this is a faded black? I have the catalogue page in my files from 1981 but the available colors do not include gray.Could it have been offered in a later catalogue?
(this is a photo from the listing)

*Sorry I know this is not really an authentication question but didm't seem to fit any other forum either.

It came in flannel gray. I had a gray large saddle pouch and it was on the blue side of gray, not close to taupe at all. The best way to tell on an unrehabbed bag is to look at leather inside the bag where it wouldn't have faded.bThe picture doesn't look gray to me. It has a brownish tinge.

I mean the creed number: J9S 9401. (The suspicious J)
Also the bag is definitely not leather.
J is not suspicious for bags made in China (S factory code.) I've said it before and I'll say it again, 1/12 of all authentic Coach bags will have J as the first letter of the creed. If you avoid all bags that have creeds starting with J, you'll pass up many, many authentic bags.

The bag is made of a lightweight leather that has been treated for weather resistance. It won't feel like the thick glove-tanned leather of classic bags.

So the bag is ok? That would be a huge relief.

This J is ok. The fakes almost always have Made in the United States creeds.

This is a type of leather Coach used for its durability for some of their business and travel styles and it's not going to feel exactly like the thick "old" glove-tanned cowhide. But it IS leather. I don't see any problems with it. More opinions are welcome.

Here's a listing for an identical bag from a highly-trusted seller:

ETA - looks like Whateve's fingers were faster.

It's definitely a faded gray color now, but will look at it in the morning under natural light for a better guess as to its original shade. Thank you!

I have one of those, too. :)
