IMPORTANT READ-ME

Please post authenticity questions related to COACH in this thread. No PMs please.
For further information, please refer to the first post on page 1 of this thread.

Please follow the following requests:
  • Before you submit a request for authentication, please search this thread to make sure that the item has not previously been authenticated by searching the seller ID and/or item number. This is not a thread to ask general questions about COACH, please refer to our main Coach forum for such information.
  • Note that authenticators have the right to refuse any requests. This is a free service, but it is imperative that you help our authenticators by using the following format:
  • FOR ITEMS LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Listing number:
    Seller and site where listed
    Link:
    Comments:

  • FOR ITEMS NOT LISTED ONLINE:
    Item:
    Where purchased or how obtained
    Comments:
BASIC PICTURES REQUIRED (but more may be requested): If necessary pictures are in the listing, it's not necessary to upload and duplicate them.
  • Front of item
  • Back of item
  • Full clear and legible creed text and serial number
  • Made in tags (when available)
  • Measurements
  • For bags with turnlock closures, show pictures of back of female side of turnlock
  • For bags with magnetic snaps, show pictures of the male part of the snap so that the numbers and letters on it can be read
  • If applicable, search interior of bag and/or pockets for small white tag with production information and include a picture of that.
Thank you and be safe!

I'll see if I can open a return, I don't know if I can since I already closed the transaction by leaving the seller feedback (this was before I noticed the bag looking off).

Contact them anyway. They offer buyer protection so they should refund you as it is illegal to sell counterfeits.
In the event Mercari won't help, if you used a credit card to pay, try filing a dispute with the c.c. company.

Noted.

Also, I suppose in the event that Mercari wants some sort of official documentation that the bag is a counterfeit in order to start the refund process, is there an authentication service you can recommend to get a document?

I recommend you start the dispute process. I used to recommend Authenticate4U but their responses and turnaround times have slipped terribly, such that I'd only recommend them if absolutely necessary and fund the payment with a payment source that can be disputed. (If you do choose to use them, contact them through their Facebook account and let them know you need a prompt reply.)

There's been so much discussion here on the proliferation of fakes from Japan and because those fakes are so close, I strongly recommend against buying from those sellers. I worry that even some authenticators may not recognize the anomalies.

Whether the sellers know they're sourcing counterfeit items or not, it's hard to say. But based on the numbers of sellers that have them, the excuses they give for why their items are "slightly different" from those of other selelrs and the fact that they share pictures and use multiple IDs to relist previously removed listings, I can't imagine that they're completely ignorant of the fact that their items are fake.

Alright, if Mercari won't help, I'll have to open a dispute with Paypal, since I paid through them. I'm not entirely sure if I want to pay more money out of pocket for authentication services, since I already lost a lot buying a counterfeit bag. :/ My Mercari account will most likely get banned for opening a dispute but at this point, I've only made one purchase and honestly don't care if it does get banned anyway.

I'll be more careful in the future and avoid buying from Japanese sellers. This is my first time trying to buy Coach but I've definitely learned my lesson. Thanks for your help!

If Mercari bans you for opening a legitimate claim for having received a counterfeit item, they'd be doing you a favor IMO. Instead of banning you, they should be banning the seller who scammed the buyer!

Hello all- I received a pic from my sister in Oregon (I’m in North Carolina) of a bag at a yard sale. May I ask what it is and does it appear genuine? She’ll go back and get it tomorrow if I want her to. I’m sorry I don’t have more pics.

It's authentic. It's a skinny tote made late 70s or 80s.

Hi there! Please authenticate this Red Crescent, there are lots of good pictures in this listing... thank you!

The bag you're asking about is authentic.

However I recommend caution in trusting ETBH (Everything but the House) to authenticate accurately. In the past, I've seen mistakes and a quick search of current listings turned up a fake. The obvious nature of this fake tells me they don't have basic knowledge of Coach!
