Hi all! I'm not new to Coach, but I am at the beginning of my vintage Coach journey and although I've tried my best to do my homework... the more I get into it, the more I realize I have yet to learn in terms of authenticating particular bags that interest me. Which is what lead me here. Reading through this forum has made me quite wary of Mercari.

Item: Coach Rambler's Legacy 9061
Listing number: ?
Seller and site where listed: Mercari / seller: 'My dog'
Link: https://jp.mercari.com/item/m81695769255
Comments: If I google the particular serial number in full, the results also lead me to this forum, so this made me really question the legitimacy of this bag, even though the verdigris indicates genuine brass hardware and at least based on the photos I trust the quality of the leather. What do you wise ones think of this bag?
Many, many thanks in advance!

It's fake.

Keep in mind that Mercari, just like every other reseller site, has many different sellers. Some are honest, some are not, and some are just uninformed.

Thanks for confirming! I've now found Hyacinth's superemely helpful posts for Salearea which have been really insightful. If this forum has taught me anything on my first day here, it's that authenticating is anything but simple and straightforward and no list alone substitutes the experience. So I will definitely be asking for authentication help again, but I'll just try to become more educated so that I can weed out more of the Foaches before I'll ask for help here.

What really threw me off with regards to Mercari was that not only does Japan have certain favourable reputation in that regard, but that I don't see as obvious of a correlation between buyer feedback and the number of (also well-known and easy to spot, such as the made in Korea bags) fakes, often sold among genuine items. Plus there's a lot of sellers claiming that the products have been authenticated which was new to me in comparison to other platforms. I guess it's to be taken with the same amount of caution as everything else.

I do have a couple more general questions about some of the things I've noticed about serial numbers and markings, if I may. I tried seeing if any of this has already been asked, but I only found an answer regarding the bullet stamps (in that they have started appearing on fakes as well).
  • What about the other listed stamps such as the FS/ES? Have these also been appearing on fakes and do these at all appear on their own or as a general rule only on bags that also have the bullet stamp(s)?
  • I think I saw you reply this to someone else already, but for the sake of clarity I will confirm that I understood correctly that fake bags can have the imitation of the overstamping effect?
  • I've now also gone through the Hyacinth's SaleArea posts thread and I could have certainly missed something but I realised that I didn't notice the MFF codes in the list that are identified by the F in front of the style code? Is this truly uncommon in fakes?
Again, all the thanks.

General answers to questions:
1. A COA doesn't necessarily indicate that a bag is authentic. Some authentication companies are done a better job at accuracy than others over the years but because many use AI and some use humans to authenticate, errors can and do happen. It never hurts to have a second, third or fourth set of HUMAN eyes look at the items.

2. I have at least one example of a fake with a "FS" stamp. Whether the stamp itself is fake or if a Coach employee didn't recognize a fake is unknown. But in answer to your question, yes, fake(s) were seen with them.

3. Yes, the fakers have used overstamping marks but in most cases, they're pretty obvious. There have been a few "well done" cases though.

4. I may have seen a limited number of fakes with "F" style numbers but have seen many fakes with outlet marks on the made in tags/labels.

The important things to remember:
1. If the fakers think there's money to be made and buyers to be fooled, they'll fake it.
2. And giving credit to @Hyacinth for her rhyme, "anything the makers can make, the fakers can fake."

@Pursepursuerr

You aren't being ignored. I saw your post but because some of the fakes are soooooo close, I didn't feel comfortable responding to a request I couldn't be sure off.

Although I don't see anything that screams fake, I'm not totally comfortable with certain details of the creed and cannot give an opinion.

Maybe someone else might be able to offer advice.

Thanks, thats what I assumed too. I guess since its was a bit cheap it will be ok.

No point in putting this off, although somehow I feel like it's me who's about to either pass or fail a test, rather than a bag :amuse:
This is the only possible vintage Coach I have so far. It's supposed to be the Maggie Duffle #9019 in Leaf. I can't really say much about its providence. Coach has been relatively uncommon in Estonia, where I am, until recent years when the brand started to be carried by department stores. There's been the odd older bag here and there, but I'd say 95% of them found on reselling sites here are post-2010 models. I found this particular bag on one of those local reselling platforms and and the description was pretty much limited to "old Coach bag" and nothing about the seller made me think they'd know more.

The measurments fit the description in the Coach catalogue (1997 Early Fall). I hope the photos I took cover the most important aspects. The main thing I think I have to note is that the color is really hard to accurately capture on photos. When I look at it in indirect daylight it pretty much matches what I see in the catalogue, taking into account the difference in lighting. In bright sunlight it looks like a bright green (much cooler than in artificial light), and in warm artificial light it looks somewhat olive. I think the closest representation is the photo of the inside, using flash.
Because I'm not sure how the colors come across on different screens I'll note that the zipper (YKK) and ring are the same brassy tone, just dirty/tarnished as I haven't really done anything to this bag besides vacuuming the insides yet.
PS: And there's supposed to be a dash in the serial number ideally, but this is where this space between the numbers has a slight indentation along the upper edge like one of those overstamping marks, but not even a slight dash.

What are your thoughts?

I found a couple of bags on shopgoodwill that I hope you can authenticate. Thank you for your help!!

#1 - Court, presumably. 10in x 7in x 3in The creed and the finish of the brass look suspect to me. Thoughts on that handle?

#2 - Canteen. 8.5 L x 3 W x 7 D inches. Looks legit but the pictures of the creed are not good. She's a bit worn, but the leather seems in good shape and she looks structurally sound. I can love her back to health.

Hello authenticators! I wanted to ask whether this bag is authentic and whether you know what the style name of it is. Thank you!

It's authentic. If it is leaf, I feel the color should be closer to your interior shot, maybe not quite as yellow but certainly not as kelly green as your other pictures look. Based on your description, it is probably leaf.

Quite a few authentic creeds are missing the dash and a few have extra dashes.

Both look fine. I've seen that happen to court handles before.

About those extra dashes... one of the questions I meant to ask but forgot earlier is that I came across a bag with an extra dash like this. It's the only one like it that I can remember seeing. Is this a more common occurance in fake bags or as human error in authentic ones when an extra dash appears like this? In case there is general agreement on it.
