Item: Janice Legacy 9966
Listing #: 115192434564
Seller: nyhighender on ebay
link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/115192434564

Sorry, it's fake. If you haven't paid, DON'T. If you own it, get your money back.

Wrong serial number font, and it's not trying to be a Janice's legacy, it's trying to be a Legacy Zip style 9966 according to the serial number. But the Legacy Zip wasn't introduced until Spring 1997 and the date code in the fake is for September 1994.

Thank you again Hyacinth. This is so depressing. I was really looking forward to a new hobby of collecting and taking care of these old bags from my youth. These inauthentic sellers have just about ruined it for me.

on another note I absolutely love seeing the old Coach catalogs posted here. Such great memories. Those were the good old days

Truly appreciate your expertise even though it is a bitter pill to swallow. Unfortunately I will be posting a few others in the near future for authentication which likely will have similar fates. This is really too bad .

Item: City Spectator bag?
Where purchased: estate sale
Comments: 10.5” wide, 8” tall at the middle, 4” wide at the bottom.
No hangtag.
I have done some rehab on it. I started questioning the authenticity during that process.

It's good, from the early 1990s.

If anyone is going to say that they "noticed some problems" we need to know WHAT KIND of problems. It wastes everyone's time having to ask for details.

That’s an excellent point about giving details Hyacinth. I’m so sorry I didn’t elaborate. I will do that next time. The issue I had with these 2 bags is the leather. It seems thin and soft compared to other vintage Coach bags I’ve dealt with. Then I noticed the back of the inside flap of the legacy bag seemed “cheap”.
Thank you and Beenbirned for your assistance on these. I’m open to all feedback! Your vast knowledge and input is always greatly appreciated!

Wow! I was sure it wasn’t after playing with it for a while. Here’s one more pic. I noticed it after I posted and went to put the flap back in. Suede seems weird to me.

That's the BACK of the inside pocket? That's the natural color of the leather before dyeing.

I don't ever remember seeing the BACK of that pocket, in a listing or anyplace else, and I've never owned one. Maybe they're all like that and Coach decided to use less expensive leather for a part of the bag that almost no one will ever even see. It's already been authenticated so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Item: Coach scooter in bone? 1996

Comments: Poshmark. Creed is inside front pocket. I think that is normal for small bags? The creed seems small to me, similar to what I just had on some worth bags. The Coach hang tag is split but I think that’s normal? The bag seems to be in great condition. Some marks from the hardware on the creed. Corners need cleaning.

Thanks for the help again! I just went to keep making sure I’m getting authentic ones.

PLEASE remember to include a link to the listing, ESPECIALLY when it's a Poshmark item!

It's genuine. I'd guess that close to half the fakes we see here come from Poshmark so being able to see the listing details and the seller history is really important.

There isn’t a problem. My intention wasn’t to question the authentication but I can understand how it could be interpreted that way. It just seemed odd that would be like that - meaning cheap looking.
Thanks again for your assistance.

We understand, it's happened to all of us. That's one big reason why a few of us decided to learn how to tell real from fake and to try to keep others from being scammed.

Your concerns about the leather are something we can't answer just by looking at photos.

What we CAN say is there was a LOT of variation in leather thickness and softness among Coach plants. There are also a lot of things a bag can go through that affect the feel of the leather. If a bag has never been authenticated, it makes sense to ask about it, but differences in leathers should usually not be something that raises red flags. One big exception to that is a bag that has stretch marks where there shouldn't be any, what I call "elephant skin", parallel wrinkles in one or more areas, because those stretch marks are much more common on fakes than on genuine Coaches. Coach doesn't have to over-stretch their leathers to soften them but sometimes fakes makers do.

If that's the only thing you're worried about, there are dozens and dozens of posts here discussing which vintage bags from which Coach plants had the nicest, thickest, or softest leathers so those variations are something you learn with experience. It's a hard subject to search for in the Coach forum though.
