Without going into too much detail in a public forum (don't want give the counterfeiters any advantage) I can tell you that a six digit serial number is not necessarily incorrect on the earliest "0" series vintage bags.
Is the bag in your possession or are you looking to purchase it? The regular authenticators typically only provide an opinion for a live auction or online sale item so unless this bag falls into one of these categories (see post #s 1 and 2 at the beginning of this thread for proper posting format and required pictures) you may want to consider going to a paid authentication service. The associated fees are small and its always best (I believe) to get a vintage expert to look at the older bags as the details have changed over the years.
