“Authentic” 30 year old Speedy rejected for repair because of being fake!

I own a lot of vintage, but I'm no expert. It looks authentic to me and I think the people you dealt with are not familiar enough with vintage to know better.

As for this bag itself, I would return to seller and find another one. The canvas on this one doesn't look that great honestly. IMO, if your plan is to get the vachetta replaced, look for one with nicer canvas.

Older canvas is not always better, it really depends. I have newer canvas that is beautiful too. It can sometimes just be a luck thing. I hope you get the result you want in the end though!

How is the canvas more of a liability? Its thicker and of high quality than what the LV warehouse is pumping out these days...
Used canvas is always a liability, vintage or not. You never know how the previous owner treated it, what they put on it, how they stored it. For all you know they could have cleaned it with leather cleaner before listing it and then you have a cracking vintage bag in a few months.

Leather cleaner causes canvas to crack? Good to know! Love this forum lol. Any idea the chemistry behind why? I use Cadillac leather conditioner on my vachetta only when and if it gets suuuuper dry in the winters where I live. This usually happens to bags I carry a lot day to day, but not those I have stored. I’ll be extra careful not to get it on any of the canvas or be sloppy with it now.

Hey there! Thanks for the input! I agree with the whole canvas thing. It really does vary from bag to bag. On this bag though I thought the canvas was in pretty good condition based on it having no folds or creases and maintaining some shape but I’m no expert. What should I look for in canvas for it to be in better shape? Thanks!

I’ve read it has to do with the conditioner’s ph and that of the vachetta. I might be totally wrong but a cleaner or conditioner with a ph above 8.0 will damage the vachetta. But on the canvas I’m not sure. I’ve definitely cleaned canvas with conditioner before. Haven’t had any problems!

Check out bedos leatherworks on YouTube. He’s done lv restoration and imo does better work than some I’ve seen done through lv. He will work with you when swapping out the trim and can tint it to better match the age of the bag.
Wow! Will do! Any idea how expensive it can be? I was quoted close to 800 at LV (before they decided my bag was fake ).

Do you want to return the bag to the seller? A lot / most of the Japanese sellers offer returns. They also tend to authenticate everything before selling it.
It's possible the boutique is mistaken. One option is to pay for an authentication service.
(The authentication thread for LV is here but there are rules around what will be considered and once you own a bag I am not sure they can help you:
https://forum.purseblog.com/threads...before-posting.926508/page-1874#post-33293156 ETA I can see you have already posted there. )

Another option is to take the bag to a specialist handbag repairer. There are some out there who will repair designer bags and provide services such as vachetta replacement etc.
Thank you for your reply! Since the incident I’ve done a lot of research and def believe the bag is authentic! Now my ego is in play and I want to go to a different boutique and get them to send it for repairs. I kinda feel sorry for my bag and want to give it another chance! Any suggestions on good repair services? I def know there are none in my area.

I have no doubt you purchased it from a Japanese seller with significant feedback. To be honest, I would take it back to the same store when the new employees aren't working. If you went in the evening, try the morning or vise versa.

Only then, if they reject it again, just return it and find another. Looks like the handles have a beautiful patina.
I have contacted the seller and he was extremely helpful. He suggested the SAs might not be familiar with vintage bags and he might be right! The boutique I went to is considerably new and in a high end area where I doubt they get to see many, if any, vintage bags!

I know you said you want a vintage speedy 30 but you can buy a brand new one from the boutique for around $1045 without a shoulder strap that you know would be authentic. Since the boutique was going to charge you $800 to replace the leather (which you wanted to do) plus whatever amount you paid the Japanese seller for the bag, it seems to me a new one would be the way to go. As another poster pointed out, once you change the leather, the bag would lose that vintage look after all.

I have a favorite PM I got a few years back (i think - it was the year it came out), the stitching is similar to your first photo where it's kind of on a slant for each stitch. Not that this is much help :/. Hope you can get the leather repaired - it's beautiful!
Thank you! I hope so too! Now it’s personal and I want to give this bag a second chance at having 30 more years of use! Imagine if I could pass on a 60 year old bag to one of my daughters!

You do have a valuable point! Just to clarify for whoever is interested in getting leather replaced the quote went something like this: 600 leather, 150 new zipper and the rest might have been something they forgot to mention or I didn’t catch. I will def consider your suggestion although now my ego is in play and I sorta want get the whole thing done so I can prove it is auth which is totally stupid, I know!!!

So what was the outcome. Do you know if the bag is authentic?
The drama is still in play !!! I will call the vuitton line tomorrow and honestly explain the situation and get some insight from them. If they do receive it for repair I will have them do the leather only which they quoted for 600 on my failed visit. I will let you know how the call went!
