The recent spate of robberies of luxury bags and watches from shoppers and diners has made me think twice about wearing my nicer bags. I have never been a fan of overly branded bags, but I am reaching more now for my under the radar and contemporary bags. What about you?

It’s a sad reality. The recent uptick (in the U.S. major cities )seems to correspond with the pandemic, the current holiday season and monetary inflation of just about everything here.

These days I don’t use Chanel bags (very recognizable) or Birkin anymore (I know soneone whose own birkin was snatched while dining)

During this pandemic, I use an old no-name canvas tote or if I want to carry a ‘brand’ bag I tend to use these guys a lot

Yes, I've been very cautious about using any of my expensive bags since the pandemic started - both because I don't want to damage the leather from the frequent application of hand sanitizer and also because of the targeted thefts/attacks that seem so rampant now.
Agreed. My more delicate bags with vachetta stay in the closet because of frequent hand washing, hand sanitizer and lotion use.

Her bag was snatched from her? Yikes! Love the Bottegas. It's one of my favorite under-the- radar bags. Plus it's easy to use in rainy weather.

Totally, I’m very conscious wearing Chanel bags. I have to have the strap attached to me at all times. My friends at work make fun of me because I won’t even leave it by my desk at the moment, it comes to meetings with me haha. I sometimes turn it round when I’m in the street so the flap is facing into my body, or wear it cross body.

A few weeks ago DH and I were followed by a couple of guys through a shopping center in Las Vegas. No expensive jewelry, watches or bags with logos but my DH is convinced it was because of my BV bag. Nothing happened but it was still unnerving. I picked up a few small inexpensive crossbody bags for the daily essentials. My beauties will still get used but not for the necessary grocery store trips or out to breakfast.

My flap bag is staying home, but I will use my jungle stroll with the logo turned towards me.

I’ve been using my H Della cavalleria most and leaving birkins, kelly bags and Chanel at home, but I think it’s more due to weight of bag and ease of crossbody. Re Chanel, I’m a reissue person, so it’s a little more under the radar. I’m pretty careful about keeping my bag on my person at all times, and there are many more locals wearing flashier bags and clothes, so I feel reasonably secure

I prefer bags without branding, and carry mostly Bottega Veneta. My Givenchy Antigona has the most branding of any of my bags, with my Loewe Puzzle coming in second thanks to its embossed logo. Branding on these bags is still subtle, but I am conscious of my surroundings whenever I carry my luxury bags, especially in parking garages and lots. I don't normally use valet service, but think it may be a good idea if I am out alone.

I am most concerned that thieves are getting more savvy at recognizing luxury bags. Even Bottega Veneta bags are easily recognizable if carrying one of the more well known silhouettes or anything intrecciato.

I fully intend to wear everything I buy. I don't purchase 'stuff' to keep my house warm.

I have no idea why people want brand names on the outside of bags.

We also need to remember thieves are more likely to be interested in what's in our bags - and go undetected ('dippers'). Wearing anonymous bags does not mean you won't be targeted. The only time I was robbed it was my shopping bags the thieves got away with, much less traceable (except I traced them :D)

And, never mind what we carry on our arms, it's actually more important to be able to be able walk fast or run in the shoes/boots we wear.

It’s not the thefts themselves that bother me (such as pickpocketing or loss of the item) it’s the violence associated with these robberies and follow-home burglaries that has me leaving my nice things at home.

I had a budget in mind for next year’s splurges but I’ve decided to forgo new purchases for awhile and use any disposable income on traveling and fine dining experiences instead.

Depends on where you are
IMO it has everything to do with prosecutorial politics and nothing to do with the above
Where I am in SoCal the police have basically been told to stand down unless it is an active felony. Every day I see multiple posts on Nextdoor about brazen thefts. The victims have camera footage documenting the crime and they are basically told to have their insurance handle it. If it is under $600 it isn't considered a "crime"
The other day at a grocery retailer I saw a woman putting things in her backpack. Store security had to let her go because she refused to let them look in it. I even offered to file a complaint but they still just let her go.
